I got a question for y'all people of GAF.

Do you try to guess a user's gender or personality based on their avatar? Like im not saying full blown judgement, like, do you see avatars that make you go "this is a dude, im sure" or "this is a gal"? What about non binary? What kind of avatars prompt you to lean any way?

Do you assume everybody with a male avatar is a guy? Would you say you could know when an user with a female avatar is more likely to be an actual female or just some guy using an avatar of their waifu? or maybe a girl wearing an avatar of her waifu? that's a possibility too! Could you catch any user with an avatar of their Husbando?

Im asking because i think it's funny that there are so many avatars in here that make me go "that's the user's Waifu". Is it wrong to think this?

Clarification: Waifu/Husbando is a joke term used to describe a character you like a lot and might be "attracted to", they're mock japanized versions of the words Wife and Husband, and they're used on a tongue in cheek manner. I post mostly in the Gaming side, where the terms are more known. Basically a character you'd have a crush on.

woof

But no.
That's actually pretty dumb.
My avatar is a dog with Vegeta hair.
Although it says something, it's not enough to get a good idea of what I'm about.

Women usually have better avatars then men. If an avatar is good, I automatically assume it's a woman. If it's a moe avatar, you couldn't convince me a woman made the account

I believe an avatar tells a lot about a person.

Except what they look like, right Dennis

No. I have to admit that I assume per default that every poster is male. Especially those with anime avatars. Which is irrational.

Only when it's an anime girl. As for my avatar, I guess you could say I have a fascination with robot characters. R.O.B, X, Zero, E-102, Kikaider, ect.

Judging based on avatars? Well, I used to judge people with anime avatars, but now I don't care. It's more interesting to just read peoples' posts and judge them based on those.

Sometimes I think that the gender might correspond but not always. I never assume a character is someones "Waifu" whatever that means.

Like for me, I just have Star Butterfly as an avatar because I like her design, it doesn't mean that I'm a girl to me or that she's my "waifu." Plus, I've been thinking of changing it anyways.

I imagine the person as their avatar. If your avatar is like, a circle, you're a circle to me. Well a circle with arms, otherwise, how would you type? :P

nah, community is way too colourful and varied to do that -rather useless- assumption with any hope of getting it right

You would judge a book by it's cover? Read the words that they post and judge them on that.

Like i mentioned on the OP, i didn't mean like if you judge a person because of their avatar, i don't know if you take the mention of "having a waifu/husbando" as having a negative connotation, but that was not intended, for all intended purposes i see those as jokey words for "favorite characters".

I also was curious to see anybody had a kneejerk reaction to assigning genders based on their avatars, because i think it's the weirdest thing in the net due to anonimity and the chance to possibly be anything or anyone.

I sure know i have been misgendered on the internet many times due to my choice in avatars and user names, i guess i'm kinda numb to it.

I just use avatars do identify posters.

Obviously I can assume that they have an interest in whatever their avatar contains but it's certainly not enough to tell me anything about them as a person.

I assume people with bad avatars are bad posters. I'm usually right.

As for gender, I usually just assume most posters are male until I learn otherwise. Though if it's an avatar of a real (non-animated) girl and she's not doing a sexy pose or something, I might guess that the poster is female.

So... I guess the answer to the OP's question is kind of yes?

I dunno, we should just have an optional thing under our avatars that says our genders so we don't have to guess.

Sometimes, sometimes not.

As with the username, you can deduce some information about the poster with that, but its always going to be insufficient, its more of an identifying thing.

Actually, no, I do judge people if there avatar is lazy. i.e., no/poor cropping, no transparency when it would be easy/make sense to add, nonstandard size, general ugliness, etc.
The actual content of avatars doesn't ever offend me as long as the user clearly put work into it.

Yeah, I do, I know I probably shouldn't, but hey, look at my avatar. This picture made me laugh really hard for some reason, if you were to see that stupid thing and come to the conclusion that I'm a really silly stupid guy, you'd be right. I think there's often a reflection of the user in their avatar.
