lawd do I miss that. PinkoMarx should have been given special exemption from the no .gifs in avis rule.
 
Personally I assume that:

- Anyone with a pony avatar is a creepy loser and probably into bestiality
- Anyone with an anime/manga avatar is a creepy loser and probably a paedophile
- Anyone with an avatar related to an exclusive Sony/MS/Nintendo franchise is a raging Sony/MS/Nintendo fanboy incapable of rational discussion about video games
- Anyone who uses a picture of themselves as an avatar is a huge narcissist
- Anyone with a comic book avatar is a fat comic book geek stil living in their parents' basement
- Anyone with an avatar that I don't recognize from anywhere is a pathetic hipster who thinks he/she is cool for using an obscure avatar

I don't actually assume any of this.

All of these are entirely safe assumptions.

Honestly, I am completely fine with judging people by their avatars. It's not unfair discrimination in the slightest. You *choose* your avatar. It is an active expression of how you would like other GAF members to perceive you, in the same way that your clothes are an expression of how you would like people you meet to perceive you. You wouldn't go to a public library in a crocodile onesie (at least I hope not), or walk around town holding your waifu pillow, so why do it here?
 
Made this during Smash4 pre-release hype, liked it well enough so I didn't change it again after Halloween.

I generally don't judge anyone by their avatar, MLP being the exception.
 
I turned avatars off when I saw a movie spoiler a few years ago. They don't really contribute much to my GAF experience other than clog up my screen estate and waste my bandwidth when I'm on my phone. Ever since I turned them off, I started recognising posters more by their name, rather than their fleeting avatar choice. Pretty pleased with the decision.

how does this avatar bear witness of me being wise, clever, funny, generous, kind and sexy hot shit? I don't buy it. My avatar is not "representing who I am" on the internet, it's just a picture of the coolest video game protagonist known to mankind
 
One thing for sure, any gaffer who judges people based on their avatars is an ass and not worth my time having a conversation with.

I think the users who use transparent PNG backgrounds so their avatars look good on both light and dark themes are wonderful people

There was a time long ago that I thought people with girls in their avatar were girls and guys in their avatar were guys.

I doubt anybody uses an avatar about something they don't like so for sure.
I cannot empathize with anybody with an avatar I dislike.
 
I tend to judge. There are many things that are communicated with avatars, and one of the is how much the user invests in his avatar. For many i can see why they simply don't feel strongly about what they have as an avatar, perhaps they don't think of it as a vehicle for their likes and dislikes, and their messages. But some do and the care they put into them is obvious in many ways, and with those users the avatar can say quite a lot. It's pretty much like anything else in the world, everything you do, especially if it's something artistically minded, will have your brand regardless of whether you want it there or not. Those who understand that and work to make the most of the little space below their names are really the best and i like them very much.

I put a lot of care in my avatars, they are always of characters i feel strongly about and all have been about female characters so far. They're always simple, classically composed, easy to read, and with some sort of implicit narrative. That's how i like them, and that's also transparent in other stuff i do.
