Variety: Warner Bros. to launch "auteur-driven" DC banner with "unusual story angles"

Link.

From Total Film..........Simon Kinberg says they must "find a way to ground [#XMenDarkPhoenix] so it's not too intergalactic." *cough*

I'm DC all day but DC seem's so less focused with no long-term game plan. Trying to go for a home run then anticipating the game. Outside of WW I am slowly losing faith and will take a wait and see approach with JL.

How can a company with some of the greatest properties fumble so much. Aueter-driven get the fuck out of here. If the movie is good then it's good. That is some hubris to then say that is not what fanboys want when DC does not even know what it wants don't pass the buck. I don't think anyone asked for this. Thank you Nolan for putting out the DK series prior to this shit show.

MCU will keep stomping DC into Sandman dust.

There goes what little interest I had in Dark Phoenix. Literally the last hope I had was "Well, they're doing the Shi'ar Empire so they can't ground it too much."

Make your ten billion Batman/Gotham spin-offs, but just give me Vixen, Booster Gold and Sinestro Corps War movies.

"We have no idea what we're doing, so we're literally going to do everything until something works."

But hey, maybe now we'll get that Red Son movie.

Because a story I want to ground it's the one with a giant space fire bird God possessing a superhero and an Alien Empire led by bird people with a legion of super heroes expies

Well it's certainly one way to attract bigger name directors who don't want to necessarily be locked down to multiple films.

Why are we so against a cinematic universe and a separate one off director driven films?

I think people are just (rightfully) skeptical and confused by the million conflicting news stories per week we get about DC. But yeah, on paper, there's nothing wrong with the idea.

Suicide Squad was the opposite of auteur-driven lol

A marketing team cut the film together.

I suppose. But when you see the BTS it all does some to come from David Ayer's mind - he wrote it, directed it, drew up designs for it.

My larger point was that being 'auteur-driven' can very easily get you 'Damaged Joker'.

Well one thing would be to not listen to anything that isn't an official source like Variety, Hollywood Reporter, or THR. That cut it down a ton.

Those Nolan movies were auteur driven. It could be more of that.

Great idea. I would love to see Elseworld stories. Give me Superman Red Son and others. Would be a real trip to see stuff like that in films.

This is a cool idea. I'm down for more director controlled comic book, at the same time this does sort of prove that WB / DC are a bit aimless with their plans. Well I guess I oughta trade one good for another good thing then.

They literally can just make stand alones that are great and then do a crisis on infinite earths movie with the aftermath being the best parte of their solo driven movies being combined into a shared universe.

They can even one up Marvel by including TV properties

It's a smart move. Why just do the MCU thing when you can do what Fox is doing too and make more autuer driven films like Logan as well.

Sure, but there's just so much noise online about DC, confusion is inevitable as to what's true or just clickbait bullshit. It would have helped if WB had clarified their upcoming slate of films a little bit better at Comic-Con. Oh well, Aquaman will save us all.

I mean, how much of that is on D.C.? Honest question. I know there's been rumors and misunderstandings but D.C. doesnt need to come out and comment on every rumor. Fans/online folks should just wait until an official announcement before getting so worked up and confused over someone's tweets or the next rumor to pop up. Doesn't help that sometimes the rumors/leaked info is bullshit like how apparently "Wonder Woman is terrible". Just look at the GAF thread earlier this year on that.

Nah. David Lynch should get Plastic Man.

Well, alright. That could be good, but if anyone is going to do a Joker origin story justice, it's David Lynch.

And a helluva lot of bad goblin drugs.

Aronofsky on Vigilante

Is Vigilante still a thing? I only read the Moore short.

Lars Von Trier on Doom Patrol

I... I literally can't imagine that. :D

Jodorowsky on Final Crisis

Perfect. Cut that man a cheque!

Good. DC has the potential to be more interesting on a film by film basis, as opposed to Marvel where the whole big-picture MCU is the draw.

I'm not saying it's on DC. Just that a little bit more clarity about what is actively in production or not would help. I mean, when was the last time they commented on the Cyborg movie they announced years ago? It's probably cancelled or has been retooled into something else but who the fuck knows?

Anyway, there's always going to be speculation online. Once they release a couple of well-received movies in a row, the skepticism will go down a few notches.

Daniel Day-Lewis will play the prison bars Kem has to eat once he discovers his powers after having been wrongfully accused of cannibalism by a bunch of androids. I think Dame Judi Dench could play a convincing Matter-Eater Lad. Either her or Tom Hardy.
