Douchebag. Yes, me.

Streaming speeds for Verizon FiOS customers dropped by 14% between December and January, according to Netflix. Meanwhile, Netflix speeds on most other Internet service providers held steady during that time period.

the slowdown comes amid a stand-off reported this week by The Wall Street Journal over whether broadband providers like Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500) and AT&T (T, Fortune 500) will charge Netflix to carry its videos.

So, what do we have here. Verizon signs a partnership with Comcast two years ago. Verizon then decides to suspend installing any new FiOS service. Comcast is about to buy Time Warner, and now Verizon is throttling Netflix.

This is playing out exactly how everyone thought it would.

We need to regulate these monopolies NOW.

Why am I not surprised?

When Obama said America's priorities need to be in its wireless infrastructure a few years ago, corporations already paid him.

No one wants to improve our wired infrastructure for homes.

Wow.

I've gone out of my way to get FIOS for years because Verizon seemed like the less gross choice versus Comcast. Now this? Ridiculous what we put up with regarding the most important communication medium of the 21st century.

Yup. If we don't start taking immediate action, we'll probably never have respectable internet service in our lifetimes. I was wondering why FiOS never came to my area. Now it's obvious.

If this doesn't improve, I'm looking into the possibility of suing to break ETF.

I increased my speeds and signed a contract ... only to actually get worse performance than I had before.

I'm genuinely curious if there is a case in this situation. Please keep us(or at least me) posted.

This is exactly right. I hope it happens sooner than later.

Google is in for the fight of their life, companies like Comcast have had tons of power for years.

It's funny how Google has gone from a simple search engine to the last hope of the internet in the US.

If I had Verizon for cellphone service, I'd cancel it immediately even though I have ATT Uverse for internet. If Uverse starts throttling Netflix, I'll cancel that as well as my wife's cellphone service.

Is this the reason why it takes a long time for movies to go from 480p to 1080p? It only happens at night though.

Using a PS3.

Its ridiculous how America's internet infrastructure is still wrapped around the little fingers of all these terrible telecom companies. And yet in these past few years, instead of working to fix the blatant monopoly that exists, the government keeps getting pelted potential bills that try to restrict the net even further. When is someone with influence going to grow some balls?

This is going on for quite a bit now, and it sucks that my only other option atm is Comcast, which is performing even worse for Netflix.

Don't expect Google Fiber to really step into the ring any time soon, there's a reason why they are mostly expanding to cities no one wants to live in (with a few exceptions). This whole thing is still an experiment to them.

Glad I don't have Verizon, what are the speeds for Verizon Fios?
Amazing for just about everything but Netflix, I believe they are 7th in the US now (they were 2nd to Google Fiber just a year ago).

Ars article about Verizon vs Cogent is better.

- Cogent has settlement free peering with equal bandwidth

- Cogent bids to carry Netflix for super cheap to pass traffic over their existing free peering connections

- Cogent equal peering unsurprisingly spikes to almost purely one way

- Verizon asks for money since the peering relationship has changed but cogent can't afford it because they underbid carrying Netflix based on their free peering

- Customers are affected

This is a mirror of L3 vs Comcast from a year or two ago. It's both companies fault

It's pretty sad how fast we went from breaking up the baby bells to letting telecoms go right back into collusion and monopolies.

Internet is a fucking utility.

State and local gov't should treat it like Water and Electricity. This is one of the biggest infrastructure changes this country needs.

Providers are gonna have to be reined in.

You know this seems to be pretty true, I've been getting pretty shitty quality from Netflix in the past few days even though I have 50/25 connection.

One night I was confused why I was getting such bad speeds, and I decided to do a speedtest immediately after watching netflix and I got 4 mbps down and 40 up

this is from when verizon struck down the FCC in the net neutrality ruling.

the internet is no longer free and any company can throttle what they don't like that doesn't bring them revenue.

comcast 'says' they won't do it, but who knows. i just got FIOS in my neighborhood and was so eager to switch. now i don't think i will. FIOS still might be faster anyway.

What else is new? So is Comcast and, all the other cable/satellite companies. Netflix is like there worst enemy.

On a podcast I was listening to recently, they said that someone was using comcast and it throttled the connection because when they connected to a VPN it was faster.

The Wifi antennae in the PS4 is actually just horrible.

Fuck you, monopolies. Fucking hate this shit, Fiber needs to roll out ASAP.

Fixed. If you think the PS3 is bad (the original fat PS3 is much worse than the slim ps3s) then I hope youre ready for the wifi on the PS4 because it is absolute garbage.

I know Optimum gets a lot of crap like every cable company but in terms of Internet service they were pretty amazing, in the five years I had them. Fast and reliable (YMMV). Ever since moving to California it's been a nightmare trying to get that. At this point I just accept that getting Netflix on HD is a miracle. They definitely do some weird throttling because my connection gets worse and worse over time, and then eventually a tech comes down and it's magically better for a while. But I don't have the time to keep doing that. I have co-workers who are on the business class through work and they have the same thing. I pay for the $10 boost whatever service (which actually worked really well when I was on Optimum).

Its hilarious to see the Verizon commercials trying to get you to upgrade your speed for 10 bucks. Your money would be better spent buying $10 worth of Candy Crush boosters

Not a day goes by that I don't miss Cablevision as a current TWC customer. The interface on their STB is (was?) atrocious but they built up that fiber network YEARS before anyone was even thinking about it and continue to deliver fantastic speeds and performance. I was getting 10+ megabits down from them in the early 90s!

I'd like to be able to say this, but the alternative provider here is goddamn Comcast, and I left them for throttling my internet all the time when installing things from Steam.

No wonder why Netflix has been shitty since November. I keep checking my speed on speed test to see if my connection drops or something, but still getting 85/50.
