Ant writes "According to Broadband Reports' news story, Verizon today announced they are now offering 'naked DSL' service (DSL without mandatory local service) in the Northeast. CBS/Marketwatch indicates Northeast customers (ex-NYNEX and Bell Atlantic) can cut or switch their local service with no penalty, starting today. The company insists the move will be national in time, but gave no timeline for when naked DSL would be available elsewhere. Verizon had promised this in May of last year, but then seemingly backtracked."

Well, first thing 8AM I'm calling up. This'll save me about $300 a year.

bout time... now maybe dsl can actually compete with cable in markets with a choice between the two technologies. question is, what took them so long?

So I could technically just get only the DSL, and buy one of those prepaid wireless phones and I'm set?

...BRING IT.

The fact that people like myself will be flooding them with calls tomorrow, saving $300 or more a year?

No, because I've known pleeeenty of people, including myself that have cancelled everything the telco's offered because they made me keep their crappy landline to have dsl... hence i switched to cable and used my cell to make phone calls.

Except it's actually cheaper for me to have Verizon DSL *AND* a landline than just RoadRunner. And RoadRunner blows anyway. Now I'll just have DSL *AND* save half my bill.

Ok does anyone know if this offer only extends to current members or can you sign up without getting Verizon service?

Qwest has been doing this for about a year. Despite only getting 1.5Mbps down and 896k up, I chose it over 4Mbps down cable. It's only $42.99 per month, and no home phone line costs or huge taxes that come with the phone line.

Qwest is replacing the 1.5Mbps DSL with 7Mbps down/1Mbps up very soon though, so that'll make me happy. :)

If it's anything like the Qwest service, it shouldn't matter if you're a current customer or new subscriber.
