[VG Tech] Alan Wake 2 PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S Frame Rate Comparison

The version tested was 1.000.012 on PS5 and 1.0.0.12 on Xbox.

Timestamps:
0:00 - Quality Mode and Xbox Series S
6:42 - Performance Mode

PS5 and Xbox Series X in Quality Mode render at a resolution of approximately 2259x1270 and appear to use FSR 2 to reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution.

Xbox Series S renders at a resolution of approximately 1280x720 and appears to use FSR 2 to reconstruct a 2560x1440 resolution.

PS5 and Xbox Series X in Performance Mode render at a resolution of approximately 1506x847 and appear to use FSR 2 to reconstruct a 2560x1440 resolution.

Quality Mode has visual improvements compared to Performance Mode in areas such as: foliage, shadows, environmental detail, volumetric lighting and LOD. Xbox Series S doesn't have any selectable graphics modes and the visual settings on Series S are similar to Performance Mode on the other two consoles https://bit.ly/4128Gdo

Always believed game performance drops more during day time, not the case here. The game is beautiful and my Silent Hill 2 Remake replacement for this year.

I'd love to play this game but performance mode isn't good enough unfortunately. Will wait for a potential ps5 pro version because that resolution + the shimmering is a no go for me.

CPU limited game and since all 3 machines have the same horrid CPU... results won't differ all that much

In the 30 FPS mode, sure.

The 60 FPS Performance mode shows a notable lead on SX in all the forest parts in the video. In the emptier city areas, they're about the same.

Alan Wake is a 30 fps game with performance mode hitting lows like this these posted. Of course this changes if you have a VRR capable display.

Damn, the console performance for this game is rough.

Definitly play this on PC if you have the hardware for it.
Also, immersion gets SO much better when sitting close to a monitor In this game.
There's a few scenes and tricks in this game that definitly wouldn't be as impactful if i've experienced them on a TV from a distance.

The performance mode is 99.25% locked to 60 FPS per the Performance mode stats (not in OP), this is better than most games that only ship with one performance profile.

I don't know why you guys are calling this bad performance,.

But performance mode is missing out on even more details, which would be a shame in such a beautiful game.
That being said, it's very impressive that console hardware can run this game in anything over 60fps even with the low detail settings.

Very curious as to what explains the performance disparity. The PS5 performs in-line with an RTX 2080S/RX 6700 but the Series X is closest to a 2080 Ti, perhaps even outmatching a 3060 Ti.

Granted, Turing is significantly outperformed by Ampere and Lovelace in this game. The 3070 for instance is 11% faster than the 2080 Ti and even up to 15%, when they are usually equal.

The tools are mature ! Full RDNA 2.0 also helps 🤣

I didn't watch video, just read the OP and saw the screenshots posted. It's good to hear that the drops are infrequent in performance mode.

awful fsr2 and terrible performance on ps5 even in quality mode.
And FSR2 is not free. if they dropped it, replaced it with fsr1 (just bog standard bilinear upscaling) and focused more on doing some good TAA, then it would look better and run faster. simple as that.
It's like 1200p in quality mode upscaled to terrible 4k.
Without fsr2, maybe they could even do 1300-1440p with softer but MUCH MORE STABLE image

The game engine makes heavy use of Mesh Shaders which as you can imagine scale better with more compute power so this would favour the Series X.

Rare miss. Most games perform better on PS5 but makes sense since this comes from a formerly exclusive franchise

A formerly exclusive franchise from 2 generations ago that was built on completely different ancient tech and has nothing to do with the modern engine Remedy have used for all their recent multi-platform projects?

So spend $1500 on a PC for this one game? Because anybody with the hardware would of course play the game on it and not on consoles.

Of all things to explain why x system performs better than y system(even though the difference isn’t that significant) you choose that.

I’m more curious why there is tearing on the series X.

Wasn’t Control also better on the Series X? It’s seems Northlight’s engine really likes the Series X architecture.
Or simply Remedy has given it the optimization and polishing time that other Studios do not give to said version....

Between hardware so equal in power and the same architectural base, the optimization and polishing time is surely what tips the balance.
It doesn't help XSX to have 1/3 or less consoles on the market than PS5 and also share optimization time with XSS dont help. Not all Studios have the same capacity to allow such things the launch day. That is why in this generation we are seeing, almost abusively, patches that correct the lack of polish and optimization on all platforms.

It was more or less the same. XSX had an advantage in quality mode but not in the game, that is, it could only be seen in photo mode, because the game was running at a locked 30fps. With photo mode the framerate was unlocked, and XSX obtained an advantage quite similar to Alan Wake 2 (5-10-15fps, depending on the scene).

I think this game benefits the Xbox Series X for several reasons. Remedy tends to be very GPU intensive and the compute units are probably very important to them, along with the higher bandwidth of the XSX, Remedy will have tried to make the most of their architecture. She is also more familiar with DirectX12 and tends to work on PC as her primary platform.

After so many months of releases and patches, it's unlikely to be due to poor optimization on PS5. They would have already solved it and it's not even close to the Xbox Series X version, it still has a solid lead.

Maybe Mesh shader implementation in DX12 is more efficient compared to what Sony offers to use primitive shaders.

pc centric devs, no doubt it’s was allways going run better on Xbox, ps5 port is still very good, image quality is butchered on both platforms as there is so much post processing going on. I play on performance mode as image quality is not that much better on quality mode.

Xbox has screen tear (not noticed it myself) this would have some bearing on the better performance over PS5. Still odd that one tears and the other doesn't though?

1% tearing will not have much bearing on a 8~10 higher FPS average in entire segments of the world. It may make the controller response better in that 1% of testing where the Xbox tore and PS5 dropped more frames.
