This is reported by Jeff Grubb he is a hit and miss kind of insider so take it with a grain of salt.

I thought gamers had a falling out with fallout after fallout 76.

If this is a non multi-player title like the original New Vegas I'm interested.

What are the chances it turns out any good though?

Outer Worlds kinda sucked imo but they were on a shoestring budget. I think with a bigger budget they still have the chops to get it done.

Is Avellone still cancelled?? They need him back for this if it happens

If Josh Sawyer is not directing and Chris Avellone not writing, I could not care less (especially after The Outer Worlds). New Vegas 2 is just a name on the box without them.

I never played New Vegas. I didn't need another one after finishing Fallout 3. Still haven't played Fallout 4, but I will probably try it at some point.

I know this is popular, but I don't really have any hype for it. If they make it, I'll play it. If they make something else, that's totally fine with me. I kind of got the bulk of the Fallout vibe from part 3 already.

Is NV actually that good or is this a rose-tinted glasses situation?

NV is one of the best games ever made. I played the first bit of FO3 and dropped it back in the day. New Vegas addicted me. It's very different tonally, and mechanically improved in every regard. I went back to FO3 and liked it, but NV is better. NV might be the best "bethesda" game ever, even better than Oblivion to me.

How is this "news" ?
I don't think people know the term "brainstorming"… doesn't mean anything. It's just ideas/concepts, being put up for discussion.
Unless MS specially said: "do this" then I have no idea why people are already taking this as "it's happening"

Doubt he gets uncancelled for this unfortunately
Even if he got uncancelled, doesn't he still harbor ill feelings towards his time with Obsidian? I remember him trashing Obsidian on twitter quite a bit.

Edit: And it would make sense that it would be years and years away if they were to let Obsidian do it. They have Avowed, Outer Worlds 2, Grounded, and I think some other unannounced projects going.

Are you new here? Rumour threads are made every day

That would be a factor as well no doubt

Chris Avelleone is cancelled but Josh Sawyer is possible, i think Jez said his small game will be released this year.
after the game releases he will be free to work on the project

Can Microsoft hurry up and take out the guy leaking everything.
Microsoft has lost the element of surprise when it comes to games in the making.
I personally hated New Vegas myself, so this one does nothing for me.

This is Smart move, last/current gen proved people will buy remakes/remasters. i mean look at GTA Trilogy despite being broken....
Remakes and remasters are easy way to feed GP.

"Speaking on his premium Giantbomb show Grubbsnax (paywalled, transcribed by VGC), VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb claimed that original developer Obsidian could create a sequel to the classic RPG, now that it's under the same roof as license holder Bethesda."

Could, should, would, maybe, possibly, theoretically, perhaps.

Years and years away - couldn't care less. The last thing MS need is to be announcing more games that are 4 or 5 years out.
Agreed. When I hear rumours of "Game X is maybe just starting". What an anticlimatic story. Will be more receptive in 4 years when they show something.

It might be janky, but it has superior writing, quests and leveling up system. The same goes for gear. I played FO3, FO4, and FONV, but New vegas blows the other two out of the water.

My thoughts on the possibility of FONV2 should make me super hyped, but with their current developers, I have no faith in this being very good. They would need more people from the original crew, which is more than impossible.

Why don't they just pay someone to do a ground-up graphical remake? The game is already designed and written.. could bring back some of the cut and unfinished content, maybe bring in settlements or farms..

So a 2030 title?....:messenger_grinning_sweat:
Depends on several things, most notably what engine they want to do it on. Do they go back and use the Fallout 4/76 engine? Do they use their engine for Avowed/ Outer Worlds and modify it as best they can to have that Bethesda field? Do you try and wait and use starfield engine?

If you go with FO4 due you use existing assets?

Which team is working on it? Outer Worlds or avowed? or a combination and have all three at once in some capacity?

I Could see a world where OW 2 is, say 2024, and this is 2027. Obsidian moves fast and is good at getting games out, even if that means cutting content. They're good at knowing what can go.

Would be nice to see New Vegas created with newer specs in mind. Always felt underwhelmed with the strip itself.

Fallout 3 wasn't bad but wasn't really true to the original Fallout spirit, it had excellent atmosphere and production value for it's time, but was shallow.
Fallout 1 and 2 were made by Black Isle, which more or less became Obsidian later.
FNV has the same soul as the first two episodes, but within the shell Bethesda made for Fallout 3.

Question is, are any good writers still at Obsidian? New Vegas was so good because Gonzales, Fernstermaker, Avellone..all gone I think. I was not super impressed by Outer Worlds.

But yes I would love to see a high quality west coast AAA Fallout again.

I mean...

I just assumed that's why Microsoft bought Bethesda and Obsidian

More caesar's legion! I'm with the other posters, I doubt the writing of Obsidian is good as it used to be.

This wouldn't take place in New Vegas itself, where out west would the next fallout be located? As long as Caesar's legion is involved, I'm in.

Edit: I'm interested to see how the NCR and the Legion are faring after all these years. The Legion was never fully explored, so a setting farther east under the Legion command would be great.

If I remember right, Josh Sawyer was the guy who directed the Hoover Dam/Caesar's Legion story while Chris Avellone directed the "courier story" DLCs. Josh Sawyer was always the biggest Fallout fanboy from the old days and even occasionally streams FNV on twitch to this day. To say he wouldn't take care of the franchise is too much cynicism for me. Then Obsidian have two thirds of the original "troika" who created Fallout in the first place.

It's very, very good, makes F3 seem extremely bland. Writing, rpg mechanics, quest design are all amazing.

There's so many ways to play a quest, for example "Beyond the beef" one of my favourite sidequests, Look at this design:
Z9JnsQe.jpg

Every time I play this quest, I always find some new way to complete it.

With the unique character build system with perks, skills, traits. The faction system, and the freedom to complete quests in many different ways, you can replay the game many, many times.
