VGLeaks: Details multiple devkits evolution of Orbis

Am I the only one that wishes for no cameras, no motion gimmicks, just balls-to-the-wall hardware power to be my primary media center for games, movies, streaming, etc.

Go stand in the corner for 15 minutes and reflect on this atrocity you committed.

yes, sir. :(

I don't mind it, but I don't like it when it's a primary focus as it's looking like for both microsoft and sony.

have them as optional accessories, but not part of the primary experience or focus.

So what secret PS4 game is being developed secretly which all the secret insiders know about and it looks secretly awesome?

I'm not a tech person, but does this mean that Folklore 2 will look super amazing looking on PS4? and will the dual cameras allow me to summon folks and absorb their souls with my hands?
Yup it definitely means just that

That's GAF in a nutshell, but I don't think it necessarily describes Average Joe Consumer, who makes up a vast majority of console sales.

Cheaper GDDR5 (they don't need the high end stuff that used for 1500Mhz+) and heats is a huge issue in consoles, look at RRoD and early PS3s. Of course cooling plays into the console size and cost, the less heat there is the less expensive and elaborate the cooling. Compare the heatsink and fans of the first PS3 to the current ones.

Neither MS or Sony want to make another large, loud and hot console that will fail. GDDR5 uses much more power than DDR and thus produces more heat.

Of course they won't that is why they went with a Pitcairn and Jaguar. The alleged 30W of GDDR5 (I don't have exact figures) would be reduced to 27W if there is linear scaling from going down 150MHz. I don't see the point in this.

i think 256bit GDDR5 with modern 4GB Hynix chips give us this choices
144GB/s or 160GB/s or 176GB/s or 192GB/s or 208GB/s or 224GB/s (for 4.5 / 5 / 5.5 / 6 / 6.5 / 7 Gbps chips)
176GB/s is a coherent possibility

Those chips have been around "years" ago - why would Sony now decide to scale back after all they had the same possibilites when they started with the devkit. It somehow doesn't make sense to me to offer developers 192GB/s as target spec and then take the slightly cheaper memory even though the target could have been easily matched.

I would have understood if Sony said we target 192GB/s with wideIO but in the end yields, cost and complexity made them scale back - those issues are non existant with GDDR5 because you know what you get in 2013.

Yes, but I wonder if there'll be a more limited range of angles at which you can hold the controller relative to the cameras before you run into trouble with occlusion etc. With the sphere you could pretty much angle the controller any way you like, except with the ball turned directly away from the camera, I guess.
Yeah as long as you're roughly facing the screen it should work, and if it can't see it will guess from motion sensors alone like move did. Shouldn't be a problem for a less swingable controller.

I haven't seen this mentioned, if so I apologise.

But, what do we think the likelihood of PS2 backwards compatibility returning with the PS4 is?

PS2 production was officially ended last year and the necessary parts for PS2 emulation surely must be very cheap by now.

I know there is Gaikai, but ideally I'd like to just put in a PS2 disc and it run, though with better emulation options as the PS4 is naturally more powerful than the PS3.

I expect PS1 compatibility to be a given.

Not to throw a spanner in the works, but that's still (est) 3 times more than what is available to Durango at 60fps on the DDR3.

It'll need as much as it can get with S3D. 1.5Gigs per eye.

I haven't seen this mentioned, if so I apologise.

It'll probably work. With that much bandwidth, they can probably easily emulate it now.

GT6/TLG/FFvXIII launch titles :)

Ive been an avid defender of the theory that Versus is still a late PS3 game, but the way things are changing, I am starting to think I am wrong. Specially if Square made significant changes on the graphical aspect of the game. :S

Doubtful. Probably be more PS2 games sold on PSN though.

It should be in unless they prefer to only let you buy the classics digitally. :/

Don't think we're expecting anything about the Nextbox at it. MS has their earnings release today too.
Correct.

At most, we're looking at a forward looking statement about Durango. And that isn't too far-fetched actually. This is the renaming earnings release for Microsoft before GDC (where things are estimated to really pick up speed), and I think investors are interested to know at least something.

tech demos are great and all, but I am really hoping they have some games to show off and don't solely rely on flashy tech demos.

Tech demo's at GDC (and rightfully so, if game assets are used it will probably be so pre alpha it becomes indiscernible. Games mixed with CG at E3 are my expectations, ughhh more sizzle reels.

One of my sources is giving me a very distinct feeling that unlike the PS3s reveal we are going to see a lot of actual games running on actual hardware this E3. As vague as they are about "what" specifically is looking incredible. They are pointing me to actual IP that came from the tech demos.

Any one of those games would do it for me, with the exception of FFvXIII. I want to believe, but SE has really dropped the ball as of late.

Anything Nomura does for the most part is still exciting to me.

man, people complain about having to find space for old consoles if there is no BC but I'm thinking what the hell am I going to do with all these cameras (and sensor bars)?

Coincidentally, I don't know of any first party Xbox games that were as graphically advanced as Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.

The scope of a project, and time/budget, has a lot to do with this. I'd consider Halo 2 up there with the best on the system.

His second point is absolutely false. Console prices are still selling between $199-$299 7+ years after their launch. The PS2 by comparison was $129 at this stage in its life cycle. These claims of doom and gloom in the console space are never backed up with numbers and facts.

For example, console sales between the big 3 have sold significantly more than any other gen before. This gen will have sold 100 million more console units by its end than the PS2 generation.

In short, the console market will be healthy and sales will soar and sustain similarly between years 2-5 like this gen.

It's not false when you consider that console prices are cheaper than they were at launch.

it is absolutely the NOT the case. Game companies dont have time ($$$) to optimize fully for several different configurations, otherwise PC games would look crazy good.

Close access to hardware is what makes it possible so cheaper consoles output better graphics.

He's saying if that scenario were to happen, that would be the case.

Barter or bribe your source for more information with whatever you must lol.

The thing I'm getting from this last page or two of discussion is just how much Sony has to play around with, regarding launch title portfolio. There's a lot of games that could potentially make it at launch, whether they will or not is a completely different story.

I'm not getting my hopes up.

Smug bastards man. Course I don't know if I would trust a Neogaf member either

Source is a Sony employee right? They owe you deets for those amazing OT OP's lol.
