VGLeaks rumor: Durango CPU Overview

Just read this whole thread over the course of a very boring shift. Now I realize the thing I miss most about new consoles is the shit slinging. I'm sure even after the specs are out people will still shit out posts arguing about what is better.

I'm glad I'm in a position to buy both

Yeah, I'll have both day 1. It's going to be nasty when multiplats are compared on DF. The console that's supposed to be "more powerful/capable" better "win" those. lol

That's what will happen for sure!

Phase 1) (that's where we are currently at)
People are arguing about specs and about which machine is more powerful. This is all enriched by a little bit of preemptive damage control here and there just in case the console of choice should indeed turn out to be less powerfull on paper.

Phase 2)
If it turns out that one console is indeed less powerfull then the other on paper, then the discussion will move on to arguing about the implications. Will it make a visible difference? Will the majority even notice/care?

Phase 3)
The final result will be one side declaring that graphics/power basically do not matter at all. Gameplay and "artisitic direction" is all that matters (and conventiently forgetting that power and gameplay are in a symbiotic relationship with each other...) for first party games.
How it will be spun for third party games I'm not sure... PS3 users were pretty upfront and upset about the Skyrim disaster iirc? Any other examples?

Well, my prediction is that despite PS4 will technically be more powerful, Durango will sell better because:
a) games will look the same for 95% of users and gaming press - either because devs won't make the effort to use additional PS4' power or (more likely) differences will be reduced to pared back effects, slightly lower frame rate, worse AA method, etc.,
b) Kinect 2.0 will offer some "cool" features appealing for mass market - I mean it's great to be able to share your gameplay on the net (PS4's 'Share' button) or in the distant future use Gaikai for BC or demos, but I think Durango will offer a lot of functions that you will want to show off to your family & friends (talking to your Xbox, in-game video conferences, streaming to other devices, etc.) and - not accounting for Live subscription - might be cheaper as well.

In other words, PS4 seems very solid and well thought-through, but if Xbox offers something groundbreaking - or maybe better: "catchy" - then more power will not help Sony in terms of sales.

And the cycle continues over and over. The butt hurt when the multi plays looked like hell on PS3 was more fun then any of the games they where mad about.

Sony announcing first is like free advertisement for MS. Now everyone is waiting to see what MS will do while the chatter about the PS4 has slowed down.

You should definitely try to get a job at NoA PR - I'm hearing they are in need of creative writers for their NPD statements...

As always, it's more fun to speculate/dream than to talk about an announced product. This period between now and until launch of the 2 next gen consoles will be the most fun we'll have until the next cycle.

Yep sony should pull out of the console race. Everything they do only benefits ms

Also, even if the PS4 turns out to be more powerful than Durango, it will give the Durango the advantage by people having lesser expectations on it to output mindblowing visuals. The PS4 will be under more pressure. It is a win-win scenario.

You two guys need to relax.

This is more along the lines of what I was thinking, nothing nefarious at all.

I would like to enshrine this post as truth. I can't wait to see how this breaks out!

Yeah. WiiU was the big winner it looks like coming out of the Sony conference. Too much pressure on Sony....

lol, wat? Look at the new Assasins Creed announcement as an example of how the PS4 will always be in the news until the Durango is officially announced. No one will stop talking about the PS4.

Oh, just to let you know there is a talk at GDC regarding the PS4. People keep talking about it until it's released.

I agree, the PS4 looked like a big bully coming out of that conference with its vastly superior technical specs over the Wii U. The Wii U gained enormous sympathy in the aftermath, and the PS4 was labelled a potential abuser and put on register by the industry standards commission.

If the rumors are true that the systems have the same CPU and that the 720 GPU is similar but just underpowered, it will likely turn into a situation where the performance simply scales up or down depending on the lead platform. In such a scenario, the developers won't really have to work very hard to exploit the extra power in the PS4. The games would probably all look better on PS4 in the same way they do when you upgrade a PC with a better GPU and more RAM.

After the Sony Playstation meeting, nobody cared about MS. No media outlet mentioned MS or their next console on television and even hardly in published papers.

There's some sort of cognitive dissonance going on where people are simultaneously adhering to the refrain that:
"Overall, power doesn't matter. The performance differences probably won't be that great anyway. The general consumer won't care."*

While concurrently leaping fervently onto any and every rumor that would a) make Durango much than currently more credible leaks suggest; and/or b) make Durango surpass the announced PS4 specs. Even ideas as ridiculous as the "dual APU" nonsense.

And if the tables were turned, I bet the power would matter greatly. It just smells of damage control, when your preferred team doesn't seem to be the best in some regard.

No one will buy an Xbox (or PS4 or Apple TV or Etc) just for most of the shitty services listed on that page. Its about the high profile services: Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, Sky Player, HBO. Services that are US/Canada/UK only.

It will be the same with cable integration. If in international markets, you get maybe one partner, where as the US will integrate with all the main services, it won't be a selling point. In fact, it could be the opposite. Seen as an international slap on then face. 21st Century regional locking.

Exactly. Since Netflix came here in Finland the last autumn it has grown quite popular, but services like Mubi (which for a long time was the only movie stream option over here) are not that widely used, and certainly wouldn't make anyone buy the system.

The 8000 MHz info takes us to a new dimension...7D or such.

Pretty sure it will have blu-ray, and love the 8000mhz typo..lol.

Not having blu-ray would contradict the all-in-one media/gaming machine idea.
