VI-GO: Potential "killer app" for PSP?

At Best Buy today, I nabbed a free "Summer Video Games Buyer's Guide" from the editors of GamePro. Much of what was contained within were products that a lot of the regular users here are familiar with, but there was one that I hadn't heard about: something called VI-GO, produced by Digital Innovations.

The description is as follows:

Digital Innovations presents a one-step solution to all your PSP's multimedia needs with an easy-to-use video recorder/player, photo vider, and MP3 playback system. Record any digital video onto memory sticks with files already formatted for instant access on your PSP. Plus, it comes with a remote control. Small and easily portable, the VI-GO may also be attached to PCs for file transfer and access.

It appears that this going to be marketed as a PSP accessory, although technically it could be used as a standalone device. The picture of VI-GO looks like a small box about the size of a pack of cigarettes, with a slot for a memory card. The Neuros MPEG-4 Recorder looks virtually identical to this; I would guess that VI-GO is a slightly modified version of this product that accepts Memory Sticks instead of CompactFlash or SD cards.

I can find almost no information about this product on the Web. I did find one Web page here which has a brief mention of this product.

I think this could be a great idea! It's a bit expensive, but imagine being able to hook this up to your VCR to easily transfer a recorded TV show to the PSP without the aid of a PC. While this might not be of much use to a technically savvy PC user who already has the proper hardware and software, this would appeal to a wide range of people who don't have the computer knowledge and/or equipment to do this already.

I think you are overestimating the general population with this product. Generally, if the cables aren't color coded or USB, they don't get it. Then you get crazy calls because they can't 'download' something off of their cds directly. Trust me, I grew up the guy people call when they fucked up their PC. They really don't know shit.

They want me to spend big bucks and waste shelf space on a machine that does the same thing as a two MB program I downloaded off the Net? Man, I wish I had taken business as my college degree so I could learn how to sucker people with minimal effort

I think you are missing the whole point of this product.

This isn't supposed to convert existing video files from your PC to MPEG-4 format. This is a standalone device which converts an analog video signal, which is fed into the A/V inputs on the back of the unit. This means you could hook a VCR or camcorder up to this device, and have it output a properly formatted MPEG-4 file directly to your Memory Stick.
