Couple able to stop elderly man who hit nine cars in Piggly Wiggly parking lot

MAYVILLE - An elderly Dodge County man won't be charged after smashing into nearly a dozen vehicles.

Surveillance video from the Piggly Wiggly grocery store parking lot in Mayville shows what appeared to resemble a demolition derby Friday.

Police Chief Christopher MacNeill said the 92-year-old man told officers he became confused and panicked after hitting the gas pedal.

"It could have been a heck of a lot worse," MacNeill said.

"We were very, very fortunate that there was no pedestrians walking out with their groceries," He added.

A Horicon couple had both of their trucks damaged. Kurt Stangl's truck was hit by the man's van.

His fiancee Veronica Giese was in a separate truck behind him. The two are volunteers for the Horicon Fire Department.

They ran after the driver to get him to stop.

"I'm slamming on the window, just pounding on it saying stop your car, stop your car," Giese said.
The elderly man is cooperating with Police, but he is not expected to be charged with a crime.

Chief MacNeill said the Department of Motor Vehicles is looking into whether the driver will be retested.

The case remains under investigation. His name has not been released.

Take away my license if old.
no pun intended

Stupid old fool should have stopped driving years ago. He could have killed people. If he was confused how did he put it into reserve then back into drive so quickly?

Old people vote so much more than anyone else so I'm not sure if we'll see new legislation come from stuff like this.

I'm kinda thinking this should be his retest, and he failed it preeeeety hard.

I've always believed that once you hit 65 here in the UK you should need a new driving test, then another every 5 years.

It makes sense.

Yeah I'd say so. I thought it'd stop after hitting from the front and back but he just kept on going and rammed into that truck too.

Seriously though, that's sad. I feel bad for the old guy. It can't be any fun to get so confused like that as a grown adult.

He didn't seem that clueless, he fucking swerved like a pro to not totally t-bone that truck. Looks like the first hit was accidental and he tried to book it out of there and now he is using his old man powers to pretend to be confused.

I would be lying if I said I didn't laugh, but this shit tends to be serious. I'm glad he didn't hurt anybody.

My grandpa got his license taken away when he was in his 80s because he hit a guy on bike.

Ummm charge the fuck out of him so he can be banned from driving jesus christ.

Idk man. Who knows if he's even aware he's unfit. Or at this point ready to make that judgement. If anything, someone in his family should keep him from doing this. But yes, I agree with 2-year retesting post 65. I just don't know if he should be fined.

Hits a car, backs up and hits more and then starts driving forward and clips some more on the way out.
He obviously hit the brake before going into reverse so he didn't just slam down the accelerator the entire time.

92 years old?

Yeah, time to stop driving.

Last year a old man drove right into an Asian grocery store in my area, from a parking spot right in front of the store, because they hit the wrong pedal.

wtf. 92 years old and still driving? smh

My grandpa does, same age. He's completely with it, sharp and good reaction times. Hasn't had an accident since the 60s, in which he was hit by a drunk driver. No tickets or violations either.

My great uncle drove until he was 97, same situation as my grandpa. He quit on his own when he felt he was slowing down. He died at 100, completely sharp mentally, right till the end. It's case by case. Sweeping generalizations like that are ignorant.

Mandatory reevaluation should be a thing though. Testing again every two years after 65 seems somewhat reasonable. Definitely needed after age 75.

Yet as you get older, your insurance gets cheaper, and the young people pay extremely high rates. Maybe it should be the other way around. Or we could not base it off of age at all.

I'm not okay with removing licenses based on age alone, but perhaps once you reach a certain age the testing should become more strict and frequent.

Real talk: You should have to take a driving test once every 7 years. Need to renew your licence (not replace if damaged or lost), take the test again. I know some mid 20 year olds who shouldn't be allowed to drive.

So how come so many people seem to be all for taking away licenses from old people, but we're okay with only a suspension for drunk driving? Why not immediately and permanently revoke licenses for that?

Oh definitely. 7 years would be very forgiving, nobody should have any right to complain about that.
