So how come so many people seem to be all for taking away licenses from old people, but we're okay with only a suspension for drunk driving? Why not immediately and permanently revoke licenses for that?
Well, I'll take the bait.
I'm not for taking licenses away from old people, but I do favor tests once every 5, 7, or 10 years or something to renew your license.
But, why not permanently revoke a drunk drivers license? Well, arguably, when the person is not drunk driving, they can drive a car (arguably... trustme I know plenty of bad drivers). It's the act of their bad decisions that leads to the bad driving. Arguably, an old person who also fails at driving is never capable of driving anymore (in this case a 94 year old who hasn't taken a driving exam since probably before WW2 if ever).
A former drunk driver can probably just
not drive drunk and they will be a passable driver, their motor skills, reaction time, and attention to the challenges of driving will -- likely -- immediately improve. An elderly driver who has these same challenges, deteriorated motor skills, slower reaction time, and lack of attention to the challenges of driving, is not likely to have these things suddenly improve for them.
Tongue in cheek, if we permabanned all people who have driven drunk, then you'd probably lose 90% of elderly drivers anyway, given that in the 60s and 70s, drinking and driving was a lot more common than it is today.
