Video: 94-year-old turns grocery store parking lot into demolition derby

Pretty much what happened to my previous car. 90+ senior and his wife get into their truck, guy gets his pedals mixed up backing out of a space and floors it in reverse, clipping one parked truck before slamming into a row of parked cars including mine at ~30mph. Totaled four vehicles including his own, and damaged two others. The truck he was driving was brand new, because it so happened he caused another accident the week before.

I think there needs to be an certain age where you are required to retest.

Of course once I hit that age I'm going to protest like nobody's business.

I can't see an age restriction on driving for the elderly ever gaining much traction. Can you imagine a politician supporting that idea? It would be political suicide. Elderly people are the ones who vote the most regularly. They would drive to the polls to make sure that politician had a short career.

I'm crying of laughter from this video. This should be automatic revoke of the license.

It's good to know that no one was hurt. I 100% agree with mandatory testing after a certain age. Some elderly drivers are very dangerous on the road almost got ran over while I was crossing.

Should be mandatory testing at the following points:

- Initial license
-
-
-
- every 5 years thereafter

Fixed that for you. Either that or we need much harsher punishment (and not just financial) for just about every auto related incident.

At least once a month at work I have to take photos of an accident on the parking lot. Almost always it is someone fucking up their car by running into a stop sign or pedestrian crossing sign. And when I say sign I mean the huge concrete ones with a big fucking yellow 3 ft. tall base. People just plow into them. In a parking lot full of people ages 3 to 90 and these fuck wads are wrapping their cars around a pole.

When was the last time you stopped at a four way and someone OTHER than you actually knew who had the right of way? Hell any non Electronic light assisted stop

Lol.

There should be mandatory testing every couple of years for those over 65. People's physical ability to drive safely (reactions etc) becomes impaired as they age, it's not discrimination it's a fact of life. We don't give out licenses to 12 year olds because generally they aren't capable of performing all the functions of driving safely, especially when shit goes wrong.

Over here in Ontario such testing exists. However my grandmother passed it so I don't have much confidence in the system.

I had sympathy for the first impact while he was reversing, but putting it back into gear and pulling forward again? Hit and run.

Yup. Fucker knew what his old ass was doing. This is a hit and run fo sho. Simple.

Also I don't see the ageism nobody in here has really been ageist.

its not age that determines if you are a shit driver or not.

Should have mandatory retesting or at the very least defensive driving classes every 2 years.

My gramps drove like a champ well into his seventies. A strict age for tougher regulations is hard to determine.

It's legal ageism. Punished for being young. It would be better if we raised rates for those who actually cause car accidents, rather than charging an arm and a leg to an entire group of people instead.

They are the riskiest drivers, that's why their premiums are higher. That's how insurance works. 20-24 yr olds form like 8% of total drivers but cause 15% of accidents. Also 16-19 yr olds have the highest accident rates.

my grandpa drove until he was 98. He had a short blackout while he was driving, so he realized he should stop, which is pretty scary. he's 99 now, and still pretty damn sharp.

I'm not okay with removing licenses based on age alone, but perhaps once you reach a certain age the testing should become more strict and frequent.

Testing should become more strict and frequent in general in the United States. It's way to easy to obtain a license. They're are way too many bad/reckless drivers out there.

I'm not saying that everyone should have to take a road test every year, but there has to be a way to get the poor drivers off the road. Regardless of age.

Yet as you get older, your insurance gets cheaper, and the young people pay extremely high rates. Maybe it should be the other way around. Or we could not base it off of age at all.

Young people are pretty fucking awful drivers. If anything it should be

high rates - rates lower - high rates

This is why old people shouldnt drive.

I disagree. My grandpa shouldn't drive, but his neighbor who's about the same age in her 80s is probably healthier (physically and mentally) than most people in their 60s and 70s. You can't punish people who are otherwise healthy just because they're old.

At a certain point old people need to take a driving test more often. A REAL driving test. When my grandpa's license expired they practically just gave him a new one.

I'm not in favor of regular retests, honestly. Yearly health check after 65 is enough to ensure safe driving. Elderly drivers are very safe unless they have health problems.

Do you need to renew your driver's license with re-evaluating process in USA or it is like a lifetime license over there.
In my country you need to retake the test process every 5 years.

I don't know if a driving test would prove all that much, really. It's not like they're fucking everyone's shit up on a regular basis, they could pass that test with flying colors and then have one of their absent-minded/slow reaction moments(that anyone can have) and do damage.

I mean, my father right now could pass a driving test but would I want him on the road everyday? HELL NO. At 65 tho, he was driving like a champ, and then I have to wonder how many younger people would fail a retest. I bet the number wouldn't be low.

What the hell, he doesn't get his license revoked? They're not even sure they're gonna retest him? What?!

In Denmark you automatically "lose" your license at 70 years old. You have to get retested to get it back

I mean, if you're over 90, you probably shouldn't be driving in the first place unless you're up for retests once in a while.

My takeaway from this is that there's a town called Piggly Wiggly. The most stereotypical idyllic small town America name I've heard.

Odd takeaway seeing that is actually a store and not a town.

In the UK once you reach 70 you have to take a test which needs to be done every 3 years to make sure that you're fit to drive, does the US do anything similar?

I live in a town in the UK with a very old population and their driving is horrendous. I can't tell you how many times I've seen them clip cars, suddenly swerve in front of people, miss turnings etc. And don't get me started on those ducking motor scooters (which they drive on the dual carriageway!)

Middle-aged drivers aren't much better, a lot of them are extremely lax and arrogant. Most of the road rage incidents seem to come from them too. One time a guy tried to reverse into my space while I was still trying to back out, then started screaming at me when he nearly hit my car.

I'd favour mandatory re-testing for everyone regardless of age, but I don't think it's feasible at all. Roll on the self-driving cars I say.
