The second annual Vibe Awards, an evening meant to honor hip-hop and R&B, was disrupted by a melee Monday night (November 15).

Reports are sketchy, but according to eyewitnesses, as Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones were getting ready to

present Dr. Dre with the Vibe Legend Award, Dre was attacked near the stage. Witnesses said Dre was standing next to his wife when the man approached in a friendly manner, and then all of a sudden began throwing punches at the rapper/producer's head.

When bodyguards and people with the G-Unit jumped in to protect Dre, things quickly got out of control. While there were some reports that a man with the G-Unit's entourage was stabbed, a spokesperson for the group had no comment on the matter.

After the dust settled at least 10 minutes later, the show went on. Dre picked up his award and told the crowd he wouldn't let incidents like that one slow him down. Later, the audience at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, was treated to a performance of "Drop It Like It's Hot" by Snoop with Pharrell Williams. Jadakiss also performed and was joined by Anthony Hamilton and Common.

The reason I didn't post this was because I couldn't get any good footage of it. Just that one ABC affiliate's footage, but the video stops playing 3 seconds in.

I think R&B and Hip-Hop are the only industries in the world that act more childish than the videogame industry

I'm starting to gather that you really don't like Black folks... That's fine tho.

The whole thing just played for me. Hmm...

Not at all, my best friend since high school is black, I've dated black guys, and I have no problem with them.

Who I have problems with are people that think gang violence and the whole gang "persona" are somehow cool and respectable, whether it be a black or white person. I guess since I'm probably classified a liberal elite you could say I have the same attitude toward redneck hicks as well.

Don't expect me to mourn, feel sorry for, or respect people that have yet to grow up enough to learn to deal with their problems with others in a productive rather than violent way regardless of their skin color. The rare physical altercation I can understand (you know, the occasional GAF story where someone is involved in a fight with a drunk at a bar or something), but when a whole culture and industry is permeated by such ridiculous nonsense I can't help but laugh at everyone involved.

Exhibit A: Generaliztion.

Chill with that.

gang violence doesn't permeate gang culture?

when a major industry awards show can't be completed without someone getting bitch slapped that's permeated enough for me.

About Suge, he is a thug. He is the reality of the person most rappers claim they are. I don't think he is going to 'let it die', or anything like that. If Deathrow was relevant on any level, he probably could let it go, but the fact is he probably got paid more off of GTA:SA more than he will off of any artist on his roster this year. But there are a few stories going around about Dre screwing people and stealing beats so Dre does have a few enemies other than Suge.

More than anything, I am surprised someone would do something like this at a Quincy Jones event. I would think there would be a bit more respect for the man than that.

Hello...? This was a music awards show. What do gangs have to do w/ anything?

Gang != group of Black people gathered together...contrary to popular belief.

Secondly, the show went on to completion 10 minutes later...

Liberal elite is right... *shudder*

Enough of that bullshit, Why is it you get fights happening at almost every Vibe or Source award shows? I don't see anything happening at BET, NAACP awards shows. This is a damn embrassment yet again.

Umm, duh! I'm not claiming the show is a gathering gangs. As dskillz pointed out it's the "thug" thing that certain people can't seem to get over in the rap industry. I mean, you don't see country singers getting mad at each other and Dolly Parton shooting Kenny Rodgers at the Grand Ol' Opry or on the street.

I mean, damn, now you've made me have to go and agree with Ripclawe of all people, it's not a black people thing, because NAACP events and many other predominantly black cultural things happen without a hitch all the time, but get a couple of rappers together that might have called each other names on the playground back in 2nd grade and you might get someone shot.

I see what you're saying, I just have a problem w/ how you say it. You've taken the actions of a few individuals, and pasted them on to an entire industry/culture.

That's what I was highlighting. In a perfect world athletes would fight during games, award show brawls wouldn't happen... But this world isn't perfect.

Good point. My brother (who is trying to become a producer himself) mentioned to me the other day that Dre has been accussed of ripping people off for their work. I wouldn't jump to conclusion about Suge yet.

As for the violence at these shows--you can't attribute it to the whole industry. Hip hop isn't all about gang violence and misogeny. It's a case of bad apples spoiling the bunch IMO.

Liberal elite is right... *shudder*

What the hell? You DO realize that it's white CONSERVATIVES like Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh that're the majority of folks dogging hip-hop culture, correct?

This "liberal elite" myth is really getting tiresome.

So then... How does R&B factor in that equation?

You guys are reaching...

I'm not sure about the R&B thing but the view of the rap industry as being more childish than the videogame industry sadly rings true.

I mean good lord, this is an awards show, actions like this should be derided, mocked, insulted, and more because they are completely and totally unacceptable and should be viewed as such.

Now is as good a time as any to post a link to the Slate Guide to Entourages.

Entourages can vary wildly in shape, size, and composition, but must include at least one driver, several bodyguards, and a few lesser-known rappers. Hammer's three wounded associates—a bodyguard, a member of a backing group called the Homeboy Choir, and a representative of tour sponsor Kentucky Fried Chicken—are a good representative group. Women (Lil' Kim, and to a lesser extent Foxy Brown) sometimes have entourages, but cannot be in an entourage. Sorry, ladies.

Your entourage will also most likely include a couple of guys whose duties are completely unknown, even to themselves. Take Jay-Z's buddy Ty Ty, who has been described in recent press accounts as a "partner," "a former executive," a "well-known associate," and a "right-hand man." Keep your eye on the floater. One thing we do know about Ty Ty: He was on the scene when Jay-Z and his bodyguard were arrested and charged with third-degree gun possession in 2001.

Cool out Coco, now I hate when people generalize the Hip Hop culture, but yes, the industry IS indeed full of very very childish knuckleheads. You don't see the Dixie Chicks going after Toby Keith with knives and chairs. You don't hear any RISK of that either. The fact is, the industry is full of shady cats that WILL cut you if they get upset. Shit, the record executives probably have Minister Farrakhan on speed dial. I can't say the same thing about Kenny Chesney or those claudes that wrote that "Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy"

(don't ask how I know about the aforementioned, let's just say I live in the sticks)

Now, the "Liberal Elite" doesn't really exist. Now, there are a crapload of liberals that "look down" upon those in the "heartland" but rightfully so. I belive a person desreves to be laughed at and scoffed when they vote a warcriminal into office, and and they still think the debate is out on evolution. I mean, hey, the rest of the world looks down on those idiots as well. I belive that the real "elite" people are these heartland evangelistic fucks that think THEY are going to heaven because they hate "faggets and queers" Now THAT'S elitist if you ask me.

It's the conservative dipshits that you need to focus your disenchantment tward. They are the ones that claim that ALL rap is full of these types of idiots that started this shit at the award ceremony. Bill O'Riley most of all.

Also, don't ANY OF YOU EVER equate Black America with Hip Hop again. You are guilty of this in the thread Coco. I find it gross to assume that discontent with this segment of hiphop = hatred for black people as a whole. That's just plain ignant.

BTW: The Punk rock scene can get just as stupid as those knuckle heads. Just ask one of my class mates. His cousin was the guy that the one White Stripes guy bashed in last summer. :lol

Also,

Rap =/= Hip Hop

Hip Hop is the culture; rapping is an element of said culutre. And R&B does have its fair share of idiots as well.

Two things...I recall a number of people destroying the Spike TV video game awards as one of the most immature things ever shown on TV. If they'd had a fight break out, it would've improved the show.

And number two, you're kidding yourself if you don't think liberal elitest exist. Hollywood is full to the brim with such idiots. Whether or not they're as bad as the conservative elite is a different discussion, but make no mistake...they exist.

I have to agree there is a lot of Hollywood Liberals, but I don't think I would call them elite, more along the lines of idiots with a lot of money who think they are intellectual leaders or something. I am a liberal guy, but every time Susan Sarandon or Barbra Streisand start talking about politics, I really want to knock them the fuck out for making the left look really stupid.

You're already wiser than DaCoco.

I mean, for what it's worth.

Susan Sarandon has huge titties though.

And she also once did a lesbian scene, but she is still an idiot.

Anyways, I think what teiresias said was sort of right, I really can't think of very many industries where you come out with a product to specifically insult another competitor, and then actually start a physical fight or two about it.

Professional wrestling comes to mind.

Well one thing you need to realize is that this wasn't a fight between battle MC's, and it wasn't a fight between all rappers in the universe. It was one guy getting attacked as he was walking to the stage and his friends jumping in to help him. This should not reflect on the industry as a whole. It was done in a public arena because that's how somebody wanted it to be done. You'd have to be a fool to think it was some random act of hip hop violence.

AlphaSnake

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
I'm sorry. But the best part of that video was when like 8 people got up and ran out of the door as soon as the fight broke out. :lol WTF!?

I've been a hip-hop fan my entire life so believe me, it pains me to say that it does reflect on the industry as a whole. First the Source awards, now the Vibe awards... keeping it real, real dumb.
