Virtua Fighter needs more pizazz to be successful in today's climate of fighters

How are you going to talk about legacy animations in VF, then mention Tekken in the same breath lol.

That recent Nina trailer was filled with old animations.

Because I didn't just say legacy, I said 'robotic' legacy animations. The stuff in that Nina trailer all looks fluid, but Lau's spin kick will forever be weird looking, and the staccato pace of the old VF punches definitely seems mechanical. Again, not bad, it's the series signature and it feels fun to actually play. But I think you have to really have rosy VF glasses on to say that's better than what Tekken's got going on.

The one thing that stands out to me is the weird guy hitting a chain link fence gate sound effect when you get hit. (Or CH'ed? Don't remember exactly...) Making that sound like a relevant impact would help with the overall presentation.

The topic is an interesting requirement because Virtua Fighter 4 was actually a sort of leader in terms of 'pizazz' or whatever you want to call it because it had an awesome customization system. One of my main reasons I even got into it was the first time I saw Akira with that... umm, board (probably a proper name for it) on his back, or Wolf with a cowboy at. I mean, I'm not really much of a fighting genre player, so correct if I'm wrong, but wasn't VF4 the first or at least one of the first (maybe first AAA) to really offer rather extensive character item (not just outfit but specific item, hat, etc) customization.

That's sort of like the go-to mainstream 'pizazz' that people like in MP games in general now, unlocks and customization, and VF4 did that 15 years ago.

If VF needs anything.... it's just a new game lol.

What it actually needs is more pizzas.

Right? Tekken has it outclassed in the pizza field.
Don't worry Paul, I also look like a chipmunk when I eat pizza
VF needs to completely reinvent itself, but there's no one visionary enough left at AM2 or Sega to do it...

please... prove me wrong Sega!!

I think that reputation of being hard to play goes way back, when the opposition between VF and Tekken was at its highest and they were still console exclusive. And VF fans may have thought that it would help their position to claim it was an elitist game.
I also think that it always was exaggerated, VF is actually very beginner-friendly in my opinion, and you can go very far with only the basics of gameplay. As a matter of fact when playing in arcades, I thought Tekken was harder to get into, since there was no way you could guess all those combos and unblockable moves.
The only really technical character in the game is Akira, and nobody plays him anyway. ;)

Agreed - though VF's rhythm and momentum is unique. Somebody coming fresh off SF or Tekken would definitely require some adjustment. But yeah - people have always confused depth for a steep learning curve. VF has a perfect learning curve for most characters, and great training mode.

Maybe Virtua Fighter could have supers

Why do you want the same elements in all your games? That is not in any way in line with VF's identity - the whole concept of this thread is flawed. VF doesn't need any reinvention - it just needs another entry, it's been 9 years since 5.

Is VF5 (not FS) still fun to play? I just bought it off Ebay, unaware of Final Showdown. I really don't mind the exclusion of Tekken-like strings btw (in fact it's a big reason why I want to try VF in the first place, Tekken is just a brick wall).

I don't know about online community, but I do prefer the gameplay of original VF5 to VF5FS, you'll be more than fine. :)

Virtua Fighter is a lot more straight forward in its mechanics than any of the other main 3D fighters. It just needs to exist at this point, world needs a VF6.

All Virtua Fighter needs to be relevant nowadays is to exist and get support (see: actual marketing) from Sega to ensure the market is aware of it. Then just show off some of those gorgeously-realized real-world fighting styles, and the rest will take care of itself.

Also make sure Lei Fei is in the next instalment 'cause I really don't want to go back to maining Jackie.

I've got it!

Replace half the cast with Sonic and his shitty friends.
