Virtua Fighter needs more pizazz to be successful in today's climate of fighters

I hope if we get another VF it would be as revolutionary as VF3 (my favorite in the series).

Don't think we'd get a revolutionary sequel without Yu Suzuki, though.

I agree my friend. SEGA is not Sega anymore... even if they tried a new Virtua Fighter... who knows what it would be..

And actually, I disagree with the OP.. VF was the king of technical fighting. It was perfect.. it's a respected style which I am sure would have been amazing if Sega would have been in a different position!!

Virtua Fighter 4 evolution had an awesome story mode, where you went to arcades in Japan and beat people at virtua fighter.

I would love to see that idea really drawn out. Show their faces, make rivals and teammates. It could be awesome.

Or better yet put some online functionality in it.

Virtual arcade centers in different regions would be awesome.

That's a deep lore.

It was kind of funny how obviously they didn't want a story mode, so they went with the arcade thing, but it actually was pretty cool. Each arcade had regular players, some of them would become your rivals and sometimes they would hold tournaments. And then sometimes the official sega arcade would hold tournaments.

I would really like to see that return.

Tried to play some last night. Forgot VF was essentially a two-button fighter. Its depth is impressive given that. Figuring out what to do with things like evasions, guards, and throw cancels feels pretty overwhelming though. Those systems feel a lot more complex than even Soul Calibur.

Tried to start with Sarah but I might try someone else.

What if they did a spinoff? Something like Sonic Fighters again? They have Atlus's IP, maybe Virtua Fighter - Persona Edition?

Failing that, then Sonic and Segas Allstar Fighting.

A return of Fighting vipers or Last Bronx would fill that nicely I think.

guard when you dont know what to do at disadvantage
elbow when you dont know what to do at advantage

those are really safe options

you can escape throws any time youre guarding ("lazy throw escape"). only makes sense to break throws at disadvantage right? since if you have advantage youre attacking or throwing and not guarding.

evades are higher risk than guarding but higher reward. use them at disadvantage. you can escape a throw while evading

I dont think its the characters holding back the game at all. I just think that with so many easy to approach fighting games with more exciting moves and systems in place that a pure fighter with its entire emphasis on footsy, frames and priority isn't going to really draw as easily.

Heck many are even criticizing SFV for being to dull and it has way more flashy moves and systems than VF and its more approachable as well.

VF may just be in need of various system mechanic shakeups to make it stand out more with its own identity out there. Its like the developers of Melty Blood said...they didn't really draw much on the title even if it functioned well until they started adding in system stuff just to be different and give the game its own identity.

Honestly I don't think it needs to be compete with other fighters. Mortal Komabat, Smash Bros., Tekken and Street Fighter has the mainstream Fighter market on locked right now. I think it'll be better for Sega to make smaller, high quality releases for the series instead of making it seem like the next big thing or changing the core focus of the series.

I'd rather just get VF characters in other 3D fighters... just not DOA because that's an abomination of a franchise.

Put some VF characters in Tekken and shit throw them into a 2D fighter like SF5.

If a new VF is to come out it needs flash. Probably could use a really good marketing campaign as well. Oh, and the FGC behind it along with lots of e sports promotion.

SEGA is sitting on a million plus selling franchise, but has no clue how to sell people on it. I definitely enjoyed VF in the time I spent with it, but I couldn't win matches without cheese to save my life. Maybe streamline it somewhat?

I don't think it's the characters. They're pretty cool. I'd be happy playing Pai. It's the moves. IMO they lack impact. The hits look weak, the reactions look weak, the sound is extremely lame and outdated. It never feels like you're hurting anyone.

Yeah, it doesn't need flash. The focus on the fighting is why I prefer it to any other fighting game. I couldn't go back after that.

While I hope for VF6, I've come to terms it probably won't happen. Would like to be surprised, since a new game would get people playing again. The LA scene died here months ago.

Yeah, I'm Durviener on VFDC, and I played with all the socal guys when they had gatherings. Those stopped a while ago, and there's been no talk of anything since.

Thanks but can someone just rank the series from best to least?

I like all of them, but, for me:

3>2>4>5>1

Unique opinion I know. I really liked the uneven stages of VF3. Also you might wanna look into Fighters Megamix, which is basically the closest thing the Saturn got to VF3.

Sounds like ur talking about DOA5. I remember the first time I played it right before the games release it was the horrible feeling of the attacks and how it looked like no pain was being dished out and how it sounded like I was hitting mud or some dead cattle everytime I landed an attack or launched someone halfway across the stage into a dangerzone. It stood out because I was so used to the good feeling I got from landing attacks in VF5FS's. Wall Splats, slumps, bone cracking all looked painful and had sounds that gelled with them. I dont think its lacking in those areas compared to other 3D fighters even though the moves are simpler and more grounded in reality than all the others. You get a real sense of gravity unlike games like DOA or Tekken where some light attacks can pop you up in the air for a generous amount of time. Watch some VF matches with characters like Wolf, Akira, Vanessa, Goh and especially on stages with breakable walls and tell me they dont look painful.

Games like MK trounce just about every other game when it comes to painful looking/sounding attacks so not a fair comparison just by nature of it.

Man, I was really starting to get good with my Lion too...VF has a nice community. I really do hope VF6 happens. Even if they do light release with 8 characters and keep going from there with updates.

This just needs to happen.

Never say never, Valkryia Chronicles is releasing on ps4 soon. Shenmue 3 is real, miracles do happen.

Lion is so cool in FS

Nah, VF's my favourite fighter precisely because it eschews the flashy stuff and just concentrates on the fighting. What you really want OP, is FM2.

Man...those kind of threads reminds me only one thing:
Sega needs to release a Virtua Fighter Collection, now !

Can you imagine? VF Remix, 2, 3 tb, 4 ft and 5 fs in one game?

Maybe for dlc or extras: Virtua Fighter 8 bits, 16 bits, kids and cg collection

VF5's Quest Mode was and still is the most fun I have had in a Fighting Game and it is still one of the few games I have rebought after I sold due to that Mode.

I'll buy ANY Fighting Game which does a Mode like that.

But now they are too lazy making other crap modes like Survival and Story Modes with Still Images.

Might aswell just make them Multiplayer-Only if you are just going to be that generic.

Was it VF5? I thought it was evolution for some reason.

The VFs before the one I am currently playing tend to blend together.

Thanks. Not discounting your opinions but Is there a general consensus among gamers on how the series ranks?

To me, the latest one is always the one that is worth playing the most. 3 is kind of a unique outlier, but just stick with the latest version IMO.

That doesn't count.

Both VF4Evo and VF5 have a quest mode. VF4Evo's is better though.

after watching some quest mode videos....

Man I want that to come back. They should make it and sell it as an add on to Final Showdown.

This. Most people would most likely go for the latest versions of fighters because of more characters &/or better graphics.

Like with Tekken. Tekken 2, 3, Tekken Tag Tournament 1, & Tekken 5 (plus Dark Resurrection) are each good/great games, but what's the point in playing them again when there's both TTT 2 (with even more characters & a lot of changes in regards to certain characters from playing like clones) & Tekken 7: Fated Rebellion?

I would seriously recommend anybody interested in VF just going for VF5:FS and working backwards from there. 5FS is seriously the high point of the series mechanically and technically. The smoothest fighting game I've ever played.

I don't think VF's underground status is any fault of the game itself either. Sega just haven't pushed it even in the face of a serious fighting game revival. The last numbered iteration was ten years ago, and the last home console release was digital only in the middle of summer 2012.

I don't understand how being 100% on board to tutor somebody from the ground up at VF is toxic and insufferable.
their demeanor outside of that was such.
i thought i made that clear why that was such a sad thing to see because if you actually got into the game/tried to learn from them they'd totally drop the toxic behavior and attitudes to teach you as best as they possibly could
if they were more inviting instead of being haughty pricks i'd imagine their pitch would probably be more attractive but i'm not really in a place to judge if that would actually be effective

Virtua Fighter has all the pizazz it needs and then some for me. I realize that it may not appeal to some because there may be a lack of "in your face" flash, but it's got the juice where it counts. No other fighter can satisfy in the same way that VF does. Best fighting series ever for me. If Virtua Fighter is wrong, I don't wanna be right. ;)

well, there aren't any bad entries. i play the games competitively and my list reflects the games i feel are the most mechanically interesting/rewarding at a high level. 1 is basically no one's favorite although its notable for being a landmark achievement for video gaming, but 2 is basically 1 but better in every way. those who played the games in the 90's at home will likely prefer 2 to the later entries due to nostalgia and how colorful the game looks and sounds. but movement and movelists are really limited. 3 is the most controversial entry because it stirred the pot dramatically, adding a fourth button and uneven terrain which resulted in position-specific combos and complicated movement that turned the series away from the general audience. 4 brought the design back to 2's stage and control design while refining some of the control options of 3. the revisions of 4 imo significantly improve the game, but 4evo is especially noteworthy due to the ps2 port being one of the best home releases of a fighting game ever released. much of the series' reputation comes from 4 as the option selects in the game can be demanding of the player. the original release of 5 is basically just 4 but prettier, while later revisions became more interesting. 5FS is the best virtua fighter.
