virtual boy

Lol, my younger colleague asked me "What is a Virtual Boy?" just a few days ago when I told him I have owned every Nintendo hardware, except for the VB.

So Nintendo found a way to reutilize both their old VB molds and the leftover cardboard from unsold Labo. And people said the company was past Gunpei Yokoi's "withered technology" philosophy.

100$!!

The virtual boy was an utter piece of trash, yet I still want to buy this.

$100 and a subscription required to play the worst system Nintendo ever made. Nintendo still has the biggest balls.

I remember playing this thing in 1995 at a friend's house and thinking the whole experience was awful.

All the games available soon to NSO subscribers if you're still looking to try some out as is a replica of the Virtual Boy shell itself with a place to slot the Switch 2 inside to use as the screen complete with the 3d stereoscopic effect.

nah, this just reminded me to finally install the Virtual Boy emulator on my N3DS XL.

that's probably the superior way to play these games. I mean, why try to emulate the main issue with the original system, aka the neck pain due to the weird position you have to get into to play?

I got one of these when the games were 3 for $10 at Kay Bee Toys, but sold it maybe 20 years ago. Kinda regretted it, because it's such a wacky piece of Nintendo history.

Wario was by FAR the best game, I actually finished it on the real Virtual Boy, I'm happy to have experienced it but was never aching to go back. It's good that people will get to play it with real VR depth as designed instead of a PC screen.

Should this have been a 3DS thing really? Can't the hardware do this without a giant plastic virtual boy accessory?

ngl, I bought a VB at launch and played it for an embarrassing number of hours before I realized how much it sucked.

I might not be able to resist the call of Red Alarm, though. That was some killer 3D.

they also announced a cheaper cardboard option and it looks identical to the LABO VR one that I already have... will be fantastic if that just works.

I don't know what's more uncomfortable: this or the original Virtual Boy lol

Awkwardly holding my hands next to my face or uncomfortably hunching over the kitchen table?

We didn't have options in the 90's, so we're lucky.

Nintendo sells hardware which needs a mandatory subscription and get away with it...Yes, i do also pay NSO with the expansion and not gonna lie, i also want that fucking thing...even if it´s just a $100 Virtual Boy case...fuck Nintendo, they know how to manipulate with Nostalgia! May be i will go on the Cardboard one on the future...Since when are gonna be available the virtual boy games?

Never tried it. I know it got bad reviews back in the day, but was curious to test it out. Kind of similar to other quirky game systems like in the 80s a friend in grade school (we even reconnected on FB after 30 years!) had a Vectrex. And it was awesome.

I have a soft spot for the Virtual Boy and will definitely buy this. I rented the thing from Blockbuster when it came out and I've owned it like 3 different times. This is pretty cool that people are going to be able to experience it in an authentic way. I wish they would release the controller with it though.

But seriously though credit where credit is due. Im very critical on Nintendo lately but they couldn't have expected to make real money with this beyond hardcore fans which probably won't make up the mount of R&D they needed to do to create the unit itself, make sure it doesn't give everyone headaches this time etc.

It feels like a passion project from someone at Nintendo and gives me hope they have still the glimmers of Nintendo of old.

This thing has a total of 22 games released for it, so what happens after that? As someone who owns the alarmo, I can't see this being a good investment in the long run.

And thus it is the perfect recreation of the original Virtual Boy experience, which also was a bad investment. Preordered.

Almost bought one a KB myself when it as dirt cheap. Saw it for like $15-25 and the games were $3-5 each. It was the first thing I seen when I got to the mall that day and decided to buy it on the way out. Of course I forgot. Came back the next day and everything was gone.

The actual VB I saw a giant mountain of at Toys R Us for $29.99, the games were pillaged from KB shortly after. The 3 for $10 is still kinda insane, that's some Concord shit.

I rented a VB from Blockbuster back in the day, I'm glad I got to try it, but no way am I spending $100 on a replica system in 2025.

and how many of them are worth playing today, maybe 3, and one of them is Japan only iirc.

That announce was utter shit, who is going to play this thing more than 10 minutes ? I am paying for this subscription and this is not satisfactory.
I'm not going to play it at all I'm not saying out a 2d TV mode for it.
you've been able to emulate Virtual Boy on a grayscale form on a computer for years now so the fact that Nintendo is not willing to do that on the big screen TV is trash.
