It definitely means something. As your level increases, so does the score you get. Wait till you hit level 30 or so, the game becomes much more fun.
Sometimes I think you could get more points if you start playing being very good but at level 1, as I'm getting the impression you get more and more locked gems in your board as you level up (at level 94 now).
The best I ever got with no enhancements I think was something like 2-3 million, so 16,5 is impressive to me.
Incidentally, it seems that the game always has a pattern that gives you near 100% chance at winning gems at the start. For the longest time it was:

Which I tried because I thought that was probably the least likely choice for many, and therefore the game's randomness might be biased to this combo, and now it seems to be the same but mirrored:

-- -- xx
xx -- --
I'm really leveling up much faster since I've started using the above, so it definitely helps.
But keeping combos going as long as possible seems to remain the most important thing. Currently I'm trying to do that while also using the green totem to greatly enhance my Crystals' score and making combos easier. I'm back now to 7.8 million, which is the best I've managed in a while. I'm using the explosion gem now though (though I still like the clear certain color better) because I'm hoping to luck into clearing the whole board.
I'm so happy you can see how long other people on your leaderboard have played the game by the way.
Makes me feel slightly better to see someone above me all the time if I see he's also played more than twice as long as I have.
Will be a while yet before I get the 100 hour played trophy though ... yikes.
