Monster Hunter helped sell boatloads of PSPs in Japan. Shouldn't that trigger something in Sony's mind that they should have thrown all the money Capcom wanted to secure the rights?

We realistically can't say SCE didn't try. SCEJ in particular pushed Monster Hunter more than any of their own IPs. I've said this before, but they made a specific PSP revision just for Monster Hunter. It wasn't just a bundle. It was new model that featured an improved analog nub, and built in back grips to go with the extended power battery. This PSP model would never see a non-MH branded release. They also made MHP3rd the star of the PSP Remaster program, and the first PSP game to be shown playable on Vita was Monster Hunter.

That said, it's clear that SCE is more interested in developing their own IPs than helping third parties as a whole right now. I don't blame them given how many times they've been burned by helping a third party only to see said third party release their wares on competing hardware. They're probably rationalizing it as a better investment to build their own brands than to spend that same money on securing some form of exclusive support from the third parties. That's a fine strategy for the console space because games have become so expensive to the point where third parties are rarely going to make an exclusive game so SCE's guaranteed support, even if it's not exclusive. However, in the handheld realm, games are cheap enough to make where being exclusive is justifiable for most third party games.

They should buy some studios but I wonder which one? tri-Ace? or should they do more collaborations with studios like platinum games, From Software, or imageepoch.

It's already too late for that. SCE should've been buying Japanese studios before Vita launched. As for your suggestions, imageepoch is poop and SCE may have screwed the pooch with From. Platinum is too close to Nintendo for SCE to buy. Buying Tri-Ace is pointless as SCE would only get the studio's name, and the employees. They own none of the IPs they've worked on, and given the performance of their non-SE published work their name means little.

In an ideal world they should've co-purchased Shift with Namco Bandai (ala Cellius) and make God Eater their face instead of making Soul Sacrifice. Heck, Shift worked with SCE in the past too ...

Yeesh. SCEJ needs to step it up.

I'm not sure what they can do. Gran Turismo is fading in Japanese viability, and Hot Shots Golf isn't a system seller, but rather a game that is bought alongside systems. Those are their biggest IPs. SCE as a whole has struggled to make blockbuster hits, and they really can't rely on third parties anymore as Vita has shown. While PS4 won't suffer the same way Vita is, because of guaranteed support from Japanese IPs that have global appeal ala Metal Gear, Resident Evil, and Final Fantasy they've lost the likes of Monster Hunter, and Dragon Quest.

I forgot about the mobile market.

Seeing the likes of Okamoto, and Sakaguchi work on games that barely even qualify as such isn't something I like seeing.

I had no clue they redesigned the PSP to tailor a single franchise, wow.

Is there anything in Disgaea 3 Vita that I can unlock that will help me get through missions really easily. First playthrough and everything seems really difficult. Even just a place to grind out levels would be nice. On chapter 2 part 1 atm I think. (Mao's heart, childhood memories)

Doesn't sound like you've unlocked access to the Item world yet?

I haven't played D3 itself but I know that it's a staple of the series. Item world is your friend - your characters will gain levels, but more importantly, so will your chosen weapons and armour :P

I never touched Item World in D1 (was playing it for the story and never really had to grind out levels). I'm not a min/maxer or whatever so I never went to do anything in Item world post game.

Er-Are you going into the item worlds?

If you are, then make it to level 10 and exit.

Repeat.

If you aren't doing that then start doing that.

Disgaea = Grind tredmill, not really an SRPG. You grind levels for your weapons so you can grind levels for your characters so you can hit 9999 to reincarnate to grind levels for your character to grind levels for your weapons for your stats to increase to where you can grind...

Don't they own half the company that made Ridge Racer Vita? Celious or something like that?

Yeah, Cellius

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellius

Clearly money well spent.

Nintendo got Monolithsoft from Scamco, but Cellius is Namco & Sony's Secret Weapon.

Notice the grips (which housed a stronger battery), and the indented analog nub:

ZTTfW.jpg

I've got that PSP (and it's loaded with 64gbs of memory!) The battery lasts forever and the analog nub is a bit more comfortable. It's also rubbery(ish) matte, which is a hell of a lot better than finger-printy gloss.

The design does seem better, the back reminds me of the PSP-1000. Why does Sony still use a convex joystick design if they knew concave would be better suited for longer play?

In general I prefer the convex analog design- less contact, better precision. Surely I can't be the only one that feels this way?

Sorry if this seems dumb, getting a Vita for Xmas and obviously looking for a memory card. How do you go about unlinking accounts from memory cards that have been used?

Thanks.

Reading the IGN review is No Heroes Allowed, this is the verdict:

If you've followed Badman's mischievous journey from the very beginning and you've loved every minute of it, then No Heroes Allowed will be a must-buy for you. There's tons of new content and an enjoyable multiplayer mode. I'm amazed at how much was added to the experience, especially when you consider the low asking price of ten dollars.

With that said, No Heroes Allowed is just as frustrating as it is fun. It's terribly difficult at times, incredibly complex, and the idea of nutrient circulation is better on paper then it is in practice. Play this dungeon-builder only if you have a high tolerance for pain.

So without going to look for the score, what do you think they gave this, out of 10, based on the verdict?

On the PSP, the concave one would've been the better choice instead of the waffle-grip thing it had. (Because it wasn't an actual "stick")

On the Vita, the concave one makes more sense because they're proper sticks now. Concave would be weird on them due to how tiny they are.

Convex sticks need decent grip on them though.

Does anyone have any info on Malicious Rebirth? Game looks great. Also Dragon's Crown?

Malicious Rebirth is coming out in Japan as a download game on 11/22 for 1500 yen (about 20 bucks). It includes a new scenario as well as lots of new moves, and the ability to change costumes. Nothing mentioned as far as an overseas release yet.

Dragon's Crown has still been on the down-low but according to earnings reports and forecasts it is expected to release (in Japan at least) before the end of August 2013.

6? For PSP (and now Vita games), usually you figure out what it sounds like, then subtract 1.

edit: I was being pessimistic.

Maybe I'm a bit paranoid but doesn't it bother you guys that the longevity of the Vita is piss poor? The Vita uses a SuperAmoled+RGB which lasts only 12 months when used 24/7 on a white background.(do your math in normal case scenario usage) The turning the screen on/off shortens it even further. But that doesn't even matter since the not changeable lithium-ion battery will die even sooner...

One of the many reasons I hate the oled technology. Over saturated cartoonish look, poor longevity, vertical lines, laughable brightness which gets worse over time and the list goes on and on. Simply half-baked in ever way and the early adopters are the idiots.

What was Sony thinking...

I would imagine in 3-4 years, provided the Vita is still a thing, there will be different Vita models and people will likely want to upgrade (like with the PSP-2000, which had a fixed d-pad and was slimmer and didn't have the mushy square button, and then the 3000 which had a screen that didn't ghost)

I see what you're saying, but at the same time, it's not unprecedented for handhelds for the launch model to soon become obsolete after a few years.

And it's not like it's a phone that you will use all the time. Maybe 4-5 hours a day, tops? Presumably it should last a few years, which is more than my PS1 or fat PS2 did.

24/7 all white screen for a whole year? Sounds like under average usage conditions it will be many years before you would see any degradation.
But yeah, welcome to the world of built in obsolescence and good luck finding a piece of consumer electronics that doesn't suffer from it. I'm more worried about the buttons failing (really hammering those L+R controls for Pinball!)

I want to buy a PSVita so bad because of Persona 4 The Golden, but I'm really afraid to because of how few games there are actually for the system, and how grim its future is releases-wise (it's even worse than 3DS imho).

So about 12-24 years of typical handheld usage ?

And as for oled technology - i'm replacing my pc gaming display as soon as they release affordable OLED monitors.
No input lag, no ghosting, perfect blacks makes it the ultimate gaming technology.

I don't count shovelware, bite-sized gaming and ports.

...

The Vita has barely any shovelware. You are insane if you dismiss "bite sized gaming" outright (In a way, every game on the Vita is bite sized gaming because of the easy pick up and play standby feature) and some of the so called "ports" are better than their original platforms (VLR) or still amazing on a handheld (NFS).

If you bought all the games that got ports on other consoles, then thats a fair assessment I guess.

Sony is not going to let the Vita die in the first 3 years, and there are a bunch of great retail games coming in 2013.

Currently the Vita is an awesome "Super PSP." Playing games like Persona 3 and Burnout Legends on it is awesome.

To be honest, with my tastes I have only picked up Uncharted, AC3: L, NFS:MW, MLB 12, and I have preordered Persona 4. But with the exception of P4, I have loved playing every game on it.

If you like Little Big Planet, the Vita version is awesome.

Well, some people like oversaturated colours... completely useless for pretty much everything especially video/photo editing.

OLED is an oversaturated, degradable screen that is near-impossible to calibrate and, without a matte display, creates massive amounts of glare. Expect any monitor made with current AMOLED technologies to cause extreme eye strain and last only ~2 years. No matter how one looks at it, AMOLED is impractical for use in anything bigger than the size of your hand, and even there it's rubbish especially with the PenTile Matrix which looks worse and you can push it to 18 months instead of 12 months usage...

Don't waste your money. The LG IPS234V (LED-LCD IPS4 display) is so much better and affordable. Great reviews across the board and it costs only 149€!

I disagree that it's over saturated. I think it looks fantastic and the closest to real life colour I have seen

?
Glowing colours are lifelike to you? Really? Maybe if you have a fetish for neon colours. Just check pretty much every in-depth display comparison if you don't believe me.

I wasn't attacking you, but it seemed that you didn't believe me when I told you that they're a waste of money. No worries!

That's because - again - it's called OPINION. Jesus. Believe it or not a lot of people like OLED and the way it shows colours.

Top of page: buy a vita I guess? I don't fucking know anymore

Hoping for details on PS Plus Vita tomorrow.

Feel like they might have left details too long. It's playing too much on people's expectations and is probably going to end in disappointment.
