Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | July 2013 | Slow Month, Fast Games

I can't make new threads, so I'll just leave this here - I just signed up for PSN and am having a ridiculously hard time registering my username (been on the phone with Sony once and on live-chat twice). I won't clog up this thread with the sordid details, but if anybody has experience with PSN, I'd appreciate the help.

Can you use the web to make your account instead of trying from your Vita?

Actually I don't own a Vita (or a PS3), I have a PS4 on pre-order and just wanted to get this stuff taken care of now so I could hand my ID out to people on GAF. With this particular problem I've tried my computer using 2 different web browsers and my girlfriends mobile.

You need to fix this by getting a Vita. It will solve all your problems and help bring world peace.

It's definitely a start. Enemy scaling is a bit of a turn-off though.

aaaaand that puts the final nail in dragon crown's coffin for me. Went from possible pre order to not even touching a gamefly que.
Went over this before when it was announced, but I'll never understand this mindset. Scaling is for the best, unless you want to power through enemies and severely diminish how fun the combat is. Think of it as a brawler, like Streets of Rage, Alien vs Predator and Dungeons and Dragons (difficulty is the same throughout the game). Not TES IV: Oblivion or some other RPG.

If you really want the 'thrill' of going mashing one button and killing enemies instantly, maybe easy mode will be the right path.

Not sure if this has been posted, but I saw this on pocket gamer and thought it was kind of awesome:

(is it ok to post a scan of an ad?)

I was going to post this because I saw it at work - the following page was another full page Vita ad promoting the new bundle where you get the 8gb card and the codes for 10 games.

It's so strange to have seen "indie" become essentially a bad word in the Vita community. I know it's not for all of us, but it's just odd to see indies so hated on with regards to Vita. I've never seen this before. I've either seen "I don't care about this" or "I love this" but never just vitrol regarding it.

Vocal minority.

I think the difference is that people are laboring under this weird misconception that indies and AAA games exist as an either/or proposition. It's quite sad. :(

I love my PSVita because of the indie-games. Lot's of excellent, cheap, brilliant games on a dualstick portable with oled-screen. Yes please!

Very smart ad, I like the idea behind it. Indie gaming is what's cool right now in the mainstream opinion (like, two years late but that's ok) so Sony should definitely ride that horse.

im in love with lots of indies on the platform, having a lot of fun with them dont really miss AAA titles but they will come eventually

It's not strange at all. In fact, it is quite easy to explain. With most dedicated gaming consoles, people know they'll get BOTH major AAA titles and indie games. They buy their console for the former and also enjoy the later (let's be honest, PS4s, PS3s, 3DSs, Xboxs and even Wii Us are not bought for their indie offerings). The same was the case of the Vita, but..

a) A lot of Vita owners think it is becoming a console exclusively dedicated to indies and feel cheated, something that Sony's statements and behavior about the Vita doesn't help alleviate.

b) (my case) A lot of us want to see the console sell a lot better, and indie games can't accomplish that plain and simple. Big games will come, I'm sure, but what I'm not that sure about is if they will be enough in number to see my most-loved console get any considerable market traction for a stable period of time.

True enough. As mentioned above, every console needs BOTH to be healthy.

Since when have all consoles had AAA and Indies? This generation only has it become the norm - and even then it was only half way through you saw it emerge properly.

A - This is a valid point; if I had purchased the system under pretences of having GTA, MGS etc maybe I'd be a little annoyed.

B - We're not all super invested in hardware sales - if it sold better we might get more games, sure. But I'd disagree about you saying indie games can't sell systems. If Minecraft never came to 360 and was a Vita/PC exclusive it would have moved a lot of units. State of Decay has sold gangbusters on 360, Journey likewise on PS3 - these games have the potential to explode in sales and that's what Sony is looking for.

While trying to secure "big" games (which I'm sure they are) they're giving us a steady stream of excellent titles. What would we be playing this month without these indie releases? Or in the run up to Christmas? It would be bleaj

I think you're pointing to the wrong problem? The lack of big games doesn't correlate to the presence of indie games. Why are people getting mad about them? Their problem should lie squarely on the lack of big games, and indie games, if they don't care about those, should not even enter the equation. The problem is not with indie games, and definitely not the fact that a huge corporation like Sony is willing to market those games, so please don't bring them in. It's like bringing a kid into a divorce. It's not their fault.

Thats true, but you still never know. It could also easily be a situation where many of these larger indie studios are already working on these games for Vita, and just have not been announced yet. Some of the bigger indie titles would take more time to bring over then the smaller stuff.

Im hoping Bastion comes considering super giant is already bringing transistor to PS4.
Diablo 3 is coming to the PS3/PS4 too. A Vita version would be nice. :(

If Transistor comes to the Vita, I'll be there day one.

Having higher stats gives me a sense of progression and satisfaction. It's fine if enemies are tough in later levels, but I don't want to go back to the first level to find that the enemies are still as strong as ever. It kills the point of even having a RPG-like system in the first place. Still buying the game regardless though.

If they didn't want people to overpower enemies through grinding then they shouldn't have made it an RPG.

Level scaling is lazy and makes me feel like I'm being punished for playing more.

You should be. The larger a console's installed base is, the more games (of all kinds) it will get. Even more, if the install base if large enough, some devs might even consider developing exclusively for that console.

Those games are exceptions, you know that. And also all good/great indie titles (like HM, the soon-to-arrive Terraria, Thomas was Alone and many others) are not (and most likely will never be) exclusive to the Vita. Hell, even when they are exclusive to PlayStation they also arrive to PS3, all of which greatly decreases the chances of them moving Vita units.

Definitely true. I'm enjoying HM just as much as Muramasa. But as you mentioned above, a lot of Vita owners think of this AAA/indie game scenario as an either/or situation.

On a different topic. VitaGAF, any recommendations for a PSone classic RPG for under $7.00? I'm open to all suggestions. I have been thinking about Grandia, but I don't know if perhaps I might be missing on something better. Thanks in advance!

.

Yeah, but Activison is involved there, and the biggest western pubs are just never going to care about handhelds. The 3DS is doing better then Vita, but Acti, EA, 2K, etc, are not flocking to that either. They can only for Ipad in that sector.

Runic may be more open to the idea of coming to Vita since they do not have a publisher to answer to in the same way. Also if your concern is playing AAA titles in your house on your portable system there is remote play for that.

just buy it, you won't regret it..

I don't think people would "hate" on the indie games if there were also some AAA announcements.

But this is not a sales thread.

Indies unfortunately seem to be easy targets for people to vent out their frustrations about the way Sony has been handling the Vita.

I understand and very much agree with wanting more AAA games, but that has nothing to do with indie games. Why should I complain that we get indie games? I should be glad since we would have a lot less games every week if it weren't for these smaller titles. In the early days of the Vita before indies were really on board with the platform, we would go WEEKS without getting a single game sometimes.

This, exactly. I love New Game+ and I love RPG elements in my fantasy beat 'em ups, but I want to be able to play the game on my original save with my 1st characters in perpetuity... not restart from scratch every time I see the credits in order to get a proper game experience.

I'll be playing this with a team of friends whenever possible, as well... and this facilitates an enjoyable action experience, where we're not just sightseeing and walking through monsters that insta-die as if they're not even there.

People aren't differentiating. Most people bought the Vita on the "console quality on the go" and "Ps3-like graphics" premise and now they are getting indie games and retro graphics.
They're disappointed and angry and unfortunately the indie games are some kind of target to focus their anger on.
And right now it pretty much looks like Indie is pretty much everything the will have to offer in the future. We haven't had a big exclusive game announcement since nearly a year...

Freedom wars? It one game, but its more than 0, if it is a 2014 title that would show that Sony is not intending to kill the platform yet.

Also while not exclusive we have had announcements this year including Batman, Rayman, and Fifa, aswell as a bunch of Japanese stuff like Dragon Ball, Toukiden, etc. With SE now being willing to support PSMobile now it is also a good indication we could see more support from them seeing as 90percent of their output now is mobile based games.

Maybe for you, but personally I mostly use my Vita outside at home. If I want to play an indie game (and by and large, I don't), I could play them on my laptop. I can also play indie games on my tablet.

And in both cases, the same games are typically much, much cheaper.

I got a Vita so I could play console games outside. If Sony had billed the Vita as an indie machine, I never would have bough it. Instead, they sold it as "console gaming on the go", but haven't really backed it up. Their recent cancellation of Warriors Lair and the no-show of Bioshock means they have little intention of backing it up

I'm not attacking you, but citing Warrior's Lair as a loss, or as console gaming?

I'm on Vita releases and compiling information like a hawk, and I forgot that game even existed. It was cancelled because no one cared... until it was cancelled and became a talking point of course.

I would love a good dungeon crawler, and it might have been great for simply being more controller and move/attack oriented from the ground up.... but every pic and video ever shown really gave no indication that it was more than a C string game. If it fell off my radar on Vita, you can be sure it's irrelevant.

Half the development was going to be undermined by the existence of Diablo 3 within a few months, to boot. Don't know the business behind it on Sony's end, but I really only see it as a loss in empathetic vaporware terms... presumably a decent amount of work and near complete game, callously discarded.
