Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | June 2013 | Late Ports and Late Threads

Sup VitaGAF, new guy around these parts.

Anyway, I'm looking for some suggestions for a decent hack-and-slash game. Dynasty Warriors has been my guilty pleasure for quite some time, but I want to change things up with something different.

I've already tried out Ragnarok Odyssey via the demo, but it didn't really click with me.
Try the Soul Sacrifice demo. It's not really a hack-and-slash, but it's a fast-paced action RPG.

Edit: Top of the page, download Toro's Friend Network if you're using a NA account and hope for a EU release soon!

The Ragnarok Odyssey demo is an awful example of how good the game can be.

Fair enough.

Another reason I've stayed away is that I am aware that Ragnarok Odyssey Ace is due sometime this year. Perhaps I'll give it another shot then.

Have you tried Silent Hill Book of Memories?

I wasn't even aware Book of Memories was a hack-and-slash game. Is it still an enjoyable game for someone who has never played any previous Silent Hill games?

hey! welcome to the vitahood. maybe check out Dungeon hunter alliance or import Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus

I've seen Shinovi Versus come up a lot in terms of popular titles for the Vita. Is it heavy on dialogue at all? I only ask as I wouldn't understand a single bit of it.

EDIT: Got ninja'd by ZeroAKA while typing up a reply.

I actually own the full Soul Sacrifice game already and have thoroughly enjoyed it so far. It's actually the primary reason why I've skipped Ragnarok Odyssey for now.

There is always Gogo's translation guide on GF. The game is... moderately heavy on dialogue ? Being a brawler with a visual novel aspect.

(yes, I'm stalking the topic, bidding my time and waiting for SK to come up in the conversation ;p )

Sounds great to me. I wonder if some of those guys are still even here. I know Kyon, Sol1dus, SAB-CA, me, and you are. I can't recall if cecil, RpgN, Shikoro, Kincade, and LagunaX are still Vitabros.

Regardless, there will have to be several Vita parties to fit all the new VitaGAF members.

Edit: Doing some research, seems most of them are still here. Nice.

Damn I, forgot TGH, OmegaZero, Kenak, Kerrak, Nicoga, Foshy, AbandonedTrolly and DMPrince, lol. Sorry guys. The only one that I don't see that often anymore is LagunaX. And there is some other OG Vitagaf members that still didn't add me (wink, wink) like Biocat, Noi, DCharlie, Mauaus and yourself.

Hey hey hey, if we're talking OG vitabros, I've been here from the start :) Got my Vita at launch, been posting on Vitagaf since launch lolol. What's good for our e3 plans?

Heh, but you didn't play the first Vita true killer app with us: TOM Blitz. I wonder why Alawar didn't released more stuff for the vita...

Add me (PSN - Shinriji) or stay tuned for the E3 pre-conf chat invites.

Remember when we thought that Playstation Suite (PSM) will bring useful mobile/android apps to Vita? ..those were the good days.

and I just don't know why Sony itself don't bother with a Vita second screen app for Sony Pictures Blu-ray movies.

Those were the days, then they announced huge indie support, it seems they can't do both.

Oh nice, I didn't expect something that substantial to actually be out already.

I'll look a importing it along with some other stuff I have lined up with AmiAmi.

well the indie support have nothing to do here, Vita still lack non-games "apps" like 2nd Screen (this is what I'm talking about) these sort of apps are not in PSM and not on Vita store, there is just nothing.

Nice nice, I'll add you. I've added most of everyone on vita-gaf now so.

Vita will probably be my main platform to intake E3 news in the coming days as I'm going to the beach for 3 days for my birthday/E3 break from work. Paid time off, gotta love it. Tomorrow I'll be on battle stations with the rest of you guys but after that I'm gonna try to get some fishing.

Also REALLY hoping Sony doesn't screw up their feed on the nico nico app (on Vita), really hoping I can just stream from there, considering Gaf is probably going to be down all day.

Edit: Also I did download TOM Blitz but my wife took over that app. She won't let me play it bahaha

They've been releasing a bunch of hidden object games on the PS3, and apparently they feel that the Vita's screen is too small to be suitable for them.

people told my taking Vita to the beach is a bad idea.

it was early in this thread

I'd say useless, you won't see anything on the screen.

As long are you're far enough from the water and don't place it anywhere near the sand its OK (just ok). I've noticed that the salt from the water tends to collect on touchscreen even if you're not near the water.

Bad idea.
I would be too afraid of sand scratching my vita. I would be careful but one grain of sand can scratch it up. I would die if that happened.

if i was at the beach i wouldnt be playing games

but bad idea regardless

i can only imagines the sand getting into all those cracks... ugh

so yeah... don't do it.

Yeah, I tried to play my Vita in my friend's garden on a somewhat sunny day recently... The reflective screen will be next to useless on a beach unless you've got a parasol or shade or something.

Don't stop them for releasing a bunch of IOS and Mini games, lol. And I saw that many people spend some serious IAP money for TOM Blitz.

You haven't added me! ;_; My PSN ID is oldyella if you're interested.

Turned on my ps3 for the first time in a while this morning and was bombarded with tons of random ass friend requests. Guessing Toro is to blame for this.

...LESS than 24 hours to go, guys...Syphon Filter: Dark Knight. I'm calling it.

I wasn't even aware Book of Memories was a hack-and-slash game. Is it still an enjoyable game for someone who has never played any previous Silent Hill games?
It has mixed reviews many of them due to the fact that it's not a normal silent hill game(the game got lots and lots hate for this reason from stupid silent hill fanboys even before the release) other than some little faults.
The game itself is not perfect but is an original mix of dungeon crawler(random dungeon, level, skills etc) and survival horror(limited quantity of objects, atmosphere, monsters etc), do not expect a dungeon crawler or a survival horror, it's something different.
I really liked it while others do not, try the demo and judge for yourself, it's not bound to other sh games ;)

It's technically an action RPG I suppose but the combat mechanics are hack and slash--you directly control your character's attacks and movements. It's like Diablo but more dependent on your reflexes and timing.

I believe it may actually be more enjoyable to someone not versed in Silent Hill lore. I recall that some of the negative feedback it got was from fans that felt let down in how the game handled the Silent Hill license. I haven't played through any other Silent Hill games so I didn't have any expectations going into it and that could be part of the reason I enjoyed it so much.

The demo doesn't offer much though. Nearly turned me off from buying the game since it isn't until later levels that the environments get a bit more interesting.

So far away......hoping for awesome Vita news though.

yeah, This E3 is Vita judgment day, The last stand, the hope for better future, where we will know if Sony care and if Vita have a future and actual third party support, so If they don't show and deliver the good then they better just discontinue it or turn them into aibos.

Agree completely the time is now.

Picked up SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 on the EU PSP sale for £2.55. It sort of fails as a stealth game since it's one of those 'one enemy sees you, everyone on the map sees you' games but it's dumb fun just running and gunning, even with a janky PSP control scheme. Slant Six really seemed to work better on smaller handheld projects rather than stuff like REORC...

Don't forget about Gamescom or TGS. ;)

I'm expecting ports from Ubisoft and maybe 2K (if we're reading Mort's hints right). Maybe a couple new Sony games. PS4 will obviously take up most of the presser.

That's a smart idea. If you are on the fence about it, it is best to wait for that version.

Ragnarok Odyssey becomes absolute mayhem in the later levels.

SOCOM is making me wish Unit 13 was a full SOCOM title with 4 player co-op and multiplayer. I guess it, like Uncharted GA, was probably pushed out quickly due to being a launch title.

Since theres alot of new vitabros here ill post my psn name if yall want a new vitabro friend.

Wutdaheckman - send a message that ur from gaf
I'm not new, but I'll add you since I don't have many Vitabros here on my friendslist. :P

EDIT: My PSN is adaggerthrough for anyone else btw.

Vitabros I finally got my vita and soon Ill have a 32 gig card. I want to get some PSP games to put on it. Which ones are the best bang for your buck purchases. (both price and space)

i was planning on strangers wrath, Ys (not sure which one I should get), and armored core(do these translate well/support 2 sticks).

I'm not sure how to sort through the GTAs.

Any must plays I have overlooked?

I thought PSM was just for mobile games, not apps of any other kind. Best to wait for the PlayStation app that was announced at the Meeting, its definetly gonna mean something for the Vita too.

If you can wait, Y's Celceta is coming. Gravity Rush and Soul Sacrifice would be my strongest recommendations. LOTS of hours of fun with Soul Sacrifice - not much play in Gravity Rush (only about 12 hours or so) but the short ride that is Gravity Rush is not to be missed in my opinion - its a stellar game.

Stranger's Wrath is a very well done port and runs smoothly and looks great. Not sure about armored core games though.

EDIT: How could I have forgotten Persona 4 Golden? Unless you hate JRPGs or have never played Persona 4 before then this is another must have. You know - even if you hate JRPGs you may still enjoy this game it is that good. Slow start but the story and character interactions even surpass the awesome combat at some point, and the battles in this game are better than most JRPGs. Definitely take a look.

Thing is, SOCOM name and brand got damaged way too much and beyond repair after Confrontation and Socom 4, with Socom reputation just went to shitter for both hardcore fans and casuals shooter gamers using a new name and trying to stay away from Socom was really their only way to sell something.

like Uncharted GA, was probably pushed out quickly due to being a launch title.

I don't think it's a good excuse, Bend is a very small studio working on new engine and trying to copy a series that very big while Zipper wasn't small studio and they were just recycling Socom 4.

I made a questionnaire/spreadsheet for the Toro's Friend Network OT that has a list of PSN IDs and social networking accounts, but it should work here too. If you're interested, add yourself using the questionnaire first, and then go to the spreadsheet to view everyone else's info. Quote this post to find the links, and be sure to mention that you're from GAF.

I thought someone said there isn't a proper UI toolkit. That would help explain why no one bothers to make apps, although that's only one of the reasons e.g. the Vita isn't an always on device that can receive push, it's only semi online; has limited memory to load multiple apps and no general model to save application state; only a few apps can properly multi task or operate in the background

I uninstalled that thing after like 5 mins, I guess I'm not a real Vita kitten after all.

Just why can't Vita have a good simple social app without all the flashy crap (something like Miiverse and StreetPass) why the poor thing have awful complex stuff like Near and Toro Network(hell even Friend list,Party, group messaging should be all in one freaking app already)

I just want Syphon Filter 5. That's it.

And related to discussion earlier in the page I cbf to quote, TGS and Gamescom aren't going to matter if Vita flops this time. TGS and Gamescom can either be good stepping stones on top of E3 or extra kicks to the nutsack, them alone probably can't pull the Vita out of a slump.

Seeing as how I'm not too knowledgeable about this, I'd like to ask here:

If I don't plan to use the vita for a couple of weeks or more, would it be better for battery to be fully charged, empty, or halfway when I put it away?

My PSP's battery is dead due to me doing it wrong :/

edit: Thanks Totobeni, I always thought it was worse to let it discharge and charge again instead of 24/7

Agreed, the 3DS's social apps are much better than the Vita's. Toro's Friend Network has a lot of potential that could be expanded on, but I doubt Sony will make any major changes to it.

So has anyone tried out the new Skype on Vita yet? I wish I could try it out but my friends haven't been on Skype recently since we've all had work. Is it better, worse?

yup, tomorrow is Vita's last chance.

I don't think it matter, just shut down the system if you'll keep it unused for two weeks.

Also do not charge the thing 24/7, charge it when it's almost empty and do not keep it charging for ages.

3DS has social apps? I couldn't even be bothered to try to add someone once they gave me their 37 digit friend code. Especially since I can't be bothered to play most of what I own online with that system.

I just want Syphon Filter 5. That's it.
From what I understand, the Syphon Filter games haven't really been selling since the PS1 era. I suppose one can hope someone came up with a really good pitch for a reboot, but otherwise I wouldn't count on seeing it again.

Anyway, I see lots you are going into full BEST EVER!!!!/WORST EVER!!!!! SAVED/DOOMED internet mode. Not a good idea if you ask me, since the actual result is likely to be neither.

For some of us, yes. Guess you haven't played Infinite.
No, I haven't.

Those Mii, Streetpass, and Swapnote apps seem more appealing to me than similar Vita apps such as Near. But then again, I don't own a 3DS.
