Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | September 2013 | Token Indie Thread

Lone Survivor is online in the EU store, €12.99 and no PS+ discount right now. Price seems unfair compared to the $12.99 in the US store. Somehow indie games are reversing back to 1:1 conversion of prices.

Also a japanese indie game inspired by Minecraft and Terraria named Airship Q got crowdfunded. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wstybs_Zd-o
http://www.psnstores.com/2013/09/minecraft-and-terraria-inspired-airship-q-headed-to-vita-in-japan/

Can you buy it now? WTF? I thought it wasn't releasing in EU til 9/25?
It's not in the NA store yet, where it's supposed to be tomorrow.
I hate you, SCEA. I really... really... fucking... hate you.

I like scary things, VitaGAF. Tell me, in terms of scariness, how much would you score Lone Survivor with a 0-10 scale? I need me some horror games.

Also, any good horror-themed games in Vita? I can't seem to recall any.....

for me 2D/pixels art just don't work atmosphere wise for horror games which is very important for the genre to actually work, I also got this same problem another PC indie game called Home.

your best bet for Horror on Vita is to cfw your PS3 and play Siren: Blood Curse on Vita via remote play.

Wondering if I should go ahead and buy a vita because I want the OLED screen instead of the LCD one, but anyone know when the new ones are coming out? I want to hold off until a month or two for a good sale.

If you're in the US, definitely wait until Black Friday. I don't think the new LCD models have been announced for release outside of Japan yet.

Hoooh really?

Scouring the net a bit I tend to find the impressions for Lone Survivor to be quite favorable.

Anyone else can give another opinion on this?

Here is an insightful counter-argument to Toto's. Granted the game and platform are different, but I think it's still pretty relevant to your question.

Let me know how it is. I think it's a bit of the ol "grass is greener" mentality, but I can't help but feel that PSN America is coming out on top with all the great indie games you're getting. PSN Japan just doesn't compete. :/ (Hopefully La Mulana will help.)

Level 70 Sorceress in Dragon's Crown -- everything cleared throughout Hard difficulty.
Still have a couple random trophies to try for (like the 100,000 damage one) and need to play through as the other 5 characters in addition to finishing Infernal... but I think for now, I'm going to take a break. I wish I wasn't so busy this week, I want to make good use of my Killzone double XP code.

I finished it on PC, with headphones, I thought the game was quite scary, some confusing parts in the game from a story point of view which makes it a bit more unsettling. There's a lot of "person management" in terms of looking after your character that you don't get in most modern survival horror games.

It's very Silent Hill in the old school way, think SH2 or Shattered Memories. Jasper has said SH2 is one of his favorite games.

I enjoyed the game but if you looking for more of a Resident Evil then this is not it.

Dude, I thought it's pretty much agreed/known that the PS1/PSP collection--especially the PS1--in PSN Japan is astronomically better than the one in the US.

Not too mention I am real jelly of you since well, I assume you speak Japanese?, and there's a score of Japanese games I want to play that I cannot since I don't speak Japanese :(

Please don't think of this as me trying to offend you, but gosh darn it sometimes I think when I see you post here that all you do all day long, every day, every week, is playing Vita. I mean, IIRC you started DC way after me and yet now you already have a level 70 character? Not to mention it always seem to me that you move from game to game in such a rapid manner, hahaha. Once you talk about P4G, then all of a sudden Muramasa, then Dragon's Crown... your speed is astounding :o

I am always more of a Silent Hill/Fatal Frame guy than Resident Evil, hmmmm.

Has anyone here imported PSO2? If so, how easy is it to hop online...can you use your american account?

And horror novels aren't as scary as horror movies since it's all just words on a page, right? ;-)

Another option for a horror game on the Vita is Corpse Party. There's two titles from that series playable on the Vita but they're PSP games.

I hate you, SCEA. I really... really... fucking... hate you.

Wat. You get games earlier than us every fucking week but you hate SCEA because SCEE released a game early ONCE.

Here's an idea, why don't all the americans that complain about SCEA create a UK account and solely use the EU PSN. Maybe then you guys would realise what every EU PSN user knows, that US PSN >>>> EU PSN.

Frost is a bit of a gaming savant. I discovered this when we became PSN friends and I saw his trophy level was 28. Probably 30 by now since that was a couple of days ago. Haha.

Now with TGS the Vita is not going to get much announcements for awhile.

Play corpse party

Anybody know if Miku Hockey is going to become free to play or if it's going to just get removed from the store? The time limit on it's PS+ exclusivity is a bit vague about that.

^I played Home on PC and didn't like it. But maybe I'm just horrible. Does 'Corpse Party' over-rely on its ghosts? They look 'BOO' levels of cheesy.

Hmmm.

Until the last six months or so, SCEA hadn't even offered a sale on a Vita game. In the last six months, yes, SCEA has gotten more sales, but sometimes the quality of the sales has been severely lacking... I seem to remember a great deal of overlap between our measly "Japanese developer" sale and your "Japan's Favorites" sale.
So let's call sales a draw.

You get a constant update time and date. You don't have to deal with Grace Chen's bullshit. Routinely, this update is within 24 hours of the NA update and more times than not is more like 12 hours. Our updates go live about 4-8pm on the east coast. I routinely see EU gamers in here talking about stuff being up via search and ready the next morning before noon my time.
Advantage: SCEE

You have more PSOne titles available. You have sales on PSOne titles. The SCEE blog staff seems to pursue getting much sought after titles added (see: Spyro games/SoTN). NA region still has the least amount of playable PSOne titles including glaring omissions like all the Crash games and the Spyro games (and R-Type games, dammit!).
Advantage: SCEE

Your PSP catalog, while I cannot speak to the # of titles in comparison, is much more reasonably priced. Most PSP games are under $10 now for EU, I believe. I recall a bundle of Soul Calibur and Tekken 6 for PSP was about $12. Here it would run us $40 a piece or $80 total.
Advantage: SCEE

Your PS+ content is routinely better than SCEA's offerings, including a ton of high profile and high quality indie games on the day of release or soon after (Thomas Was Alone, Velocity Ultra, Stealth Inc [shortly after release]) as well as a multitude of FULL RETAIL games. SCEA offers us an extremely old retail titles that EU probably got 6 months prior (and after the sequel has released) or a PSN game and a PSP game every month. You know your PS+ content well in advance and get it on all on a single day prior to the month even starting. SCEA strings us along and forces us to wait week after week for the scraps they throw us.
Advantage: SCEE

Your web store seems to understand the concept of pre-orders and pre-loading games.
Advantage: SCEE

The overall cost of games (in general) is a bit more affordable in NA, at least in terms of full price native Vita titles.
Advantage: SCEA

That's 5-1 from where I'm sitting.

As I've said before, if Sony would let me switch the region of my main account and take all content, ps+ sub, and trophies with me, I would move my main account to EU in the blink of an eye and never look back.

SCEA also get games localized faster than SCEE. With the rare exception lately being Killzone which was a week apart. We're still waiting for Muramasa and Dragon's Crown.

All this talk about US PSN vs PAL PSN...

If I can understand Japanese, I would gladly ditch both of them and jump over to Japanese PSN :P

Anyways, this is off-topic but, do you folks think that at my age, which is 29, it is already too late for me to start studying Japanese?

This comparison fails because they are completely different mediums.

That was my point exactly, that horror can be created in different kinds of media and narrative forms.

Horror is something that takes place in one's own mind. The stimulus that causes this response can itself be many things: a scene depicted on a movie screen, a couple of sentences on a page, an interactive scene in a 3D video game or even a couple of pixelly blobs on a 2D plane.

Didn't Jap and Asia PSN merged?

It's not out yet, but there's an upcoming survival horror game called Forgotten Memories, which looks promising. Here's some footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHtOk2rIVcI&feature=youtube_gdata_player
It's been in development for quite a while. Been following it since it was first announced (for iOS only originally- I used to be fairly into iOS gaming, but I've gotten out of it now, no thanks to me having no storage on my iPhone due to music, and my Vita/3DS). Not sure when it'll release, but hopefully before the end of the year.

Vita allows me to play a lot more than normal.

And the Dragon's Crown stuff didn't take that long... 36 hours, maybe?

Hey! At least US PS+ has discounts. =/

Are you talking about sales in general or discounts on new games when they release?
The only thing we've really had over EU lately was the stupid PLAY promotion, which -- for me-- was only good for a small discount on Stealth Inc. (which is now free for EU with the DLC included, I believe).

its never too late to do anything in life.

Does JP PS+ still have that massive list of PS1 classics for free? Granted a lot of it is not for everyone, but that's the kind of stuff I'd love to see more of as PS4 rolls out. Just offer up the back catalog and watch the mindset shift :D

There is never too late to learn anything for your life! Especially with the recent Sega-Sammy acquisition of Atlus.

This is good advice. I recently went back to college in my mid 30's. I have two interviews this week which could land me my dream job. :)

If you want to learn or do something, start taking active steps to make it happen!

I've often wondered if Rosetta Stone would work well for Japanese... there's such a fundamental structure difference that it's supposed to be really hard to pick up as a second language. But, like Laughing Banana, sometimes I think about trying. Not learning to read, necessarily, but learning to speak.

Take a Japanese class from a local community college, then combine your basic understanding with Rosetta Stone and immerse yourself in Japanese language as much as you can. Anyone can learn Japanese, you just have to try. :)

buy Persona 4 Golden, it's so good and best JRPG of the PS2, amazing story, combat, fusing, high school and dating simulation all in one also the mighty Chie-chan.

Dragon's Crown is really boring (and very repetitive) I'm trying to force myself to beat it somehow, I didn't bought KZM but in the beta it have a very narrow FOV that will make your brain explode with very painful headaches (unless you are not narrow FOV sensitive)

Your forgot to tell him

DONT BUY P3P its horrible and you will regret it for the rest of your life if you buy it :)

The structure and alphabets (hiragana and katakana) aren't very hard. The hardest parts are learning and remembering words, and learning kanji... So much kanji.

Let me guess, EU PSN?

Yes. Played an hour and I have to say this game is weird. Thought it would be more straight forward and less psychadelic. It's a mindfuck right from the get go.

Game doesn't explain every mechanic, I guess the player is supposed to learn by trying them out. Because of the lack of ressources, I am kind of reluctant. Have eaten most of the time when I was hungry and went to bed when sleepy but I don't know what happens elsewise. Only the pills I didn't use, curious what they do although I did get some kind of explanation.

Port runs fine by the way.

Strange that they dont offer a PS+ Discount on Lone Survivor, I was pretty they talked about that, when they announced the EU date a few days back on PlayStation Blog.

I will wait a couple of days, maybe they will discount it when the store officialy updates.

Almost done with 100% of Dragon Fantasy Book 1. It's easy but it's really a grind fest, not much point most times to use abilities other than healing and it's very dependent on equipment so expect to grind it out for cash to be able to deal with the next or current area of monsters. Plus the encounter rate is super high. But I only payed about >$3 for it so it was a decent time waster as I was watching TV. I would hope the sequel fixes those problems. And judging from the GB quicklook it looks to be a decent improvement as it is more Chrono Trigger like than Dragon Warrior.

US PSN vs. EU PSN vs. Japan PSN

BEGIN!

No thanks!;D

Yeah, if we're talking PS1 / PSP titles, then JPSN is pretty good. Quacamelee, Walking Dead, Lone Survivor, and Plants vs. Zombies (to name a few) are not on the JP store though. I'm more worried about how that trend will continue into the future.

It's never too late to start, especially if it's doing something you enjoy.

Just start small, set realistic goals, and keep working towards them.

If your primary interest is in playing games, you're going to have a hard time. I'd start with learning hiragana / katana and then jump straight into learning kanji by school year. Maybe make a list of the most commonly seen words to get you started. Some games like Pokemon, are pretty good since you don't need to really pay attention to the story and can focus on monster names and attacks. Most of the kanji have hiragana subtitles (or even the option to play the game just in hiragana) which can make it easier for you to get into it.

Fair warning, my japanese is pretty good and I still prefer to play RPGs in English just because I think most Japanese VAs sound the same (especially the guys) and long-winded stories can be a pain. It will take you a long time to get proficient, but if you're enjoying it then why not? You can supplement your studying with manga and stuff as well.

If you're really serious about learning both spoken and written japanese, then you'll probably need to look at investing in a class, finding a japanese buddy, or whatever. The only way to get better at speaking Japanese is to speak it. No ways around it.

They still have it, but many of the games are thing like SIMPLE 1500, mahjong etc but there are also gems there. I think JP PSN have a 15 days free tria of PS+ you can download.

I think the most challenging thing with learning japanese is to remembering the kanji. You really need a good grasp of the kanji to even think of finishing a game. Though I hope this won't discourage anyone from learning the language.

I really recommend people learning japanese to take up kanji as soon as possible since they really help with understanding the language. Each has their own meaning which will help dramatically with compound words. Looking up kanji from old games, may be a bit hard due to their resolution though(hint:psp on vita)

I started learning by a podcast named japanese101.com. It started as a semi-free site, but is now really filled with limits to make you purchase their service. The quality though is impeccable, and you can get the new episodes for free.

JP PSN has really a huge amount of games(many very niche) of PSX, PS2, PC-Engine(yes, even that). Their PS+ is not really good though, compared to SCEE, but they seem to never get any new retail games. The price can be really low, although some new games may come up to 7140 yen.

Oh god, I saw that "Switching from Vita to 3DS" thread and I just want to scream at everyone who posted. Don't go in that thread or you will probably die from spontaneous combustion.

I read the first page and stopped it

Meanwhile there's always something interesting on the Vita every week. At least, if it's not NEW, it's at least INTERESTING.

I think it's simply that you tastes don't suit the 3DS. I don't like Animal Crossing neither. I don't get its appeal. Nintendo franchises in general are meh to me. I was a PS kid, so Mario, Zelda and friends are meh to me. Although I played Mario Kart, NSMBWii and Smash in friend's home. Only one I really liked is Pokemon, but it's because the show was very popular when i was a kid.

^I played Home on PC and didn't like it. But maybe I'm just horrible. Does 'Corpse Party' over-rely on its ghosts? They look 'BOO' levels of cheesy.
h6bhqXN.jpg

Corpse Party is a nice game. Played it with my PSP sometime ago and really liked it. You are not going to shit your pants but it's a good game. The school and story are interesting, there are lots of endings. The characters use anime stereotypes but they are not specially annoying. I think the first one is for cheap in PSN.

SCEA also get games localized faster than SCEE. With the rare exception lately being Killzone which was a week apart. We're still waiting for Muramasa and Dragon's Crown.

But that isn't Sony's fault. I think XSEED and NISA didn't have an European brand, right? Although it would be cool if Sony helped them bringing their games in time here (and with a retail version).

But, like Laughing Banana, sometimes I think about trying. Not learning to read, necessarily, but learning to speak.

I'd love to learn Japanese too. Although I don't like so much their manga and that stuff lately, i still think it is and amazing country. But first I want to end my english studies. Then i'll probably start with other lenguage. My college has Chinese and Japanese (and French, German, Italian and all that).

Great, another indie game that's getting way too overpriced for its own good (Lone Survivor). I'm not liking this trend at all. Sod that. See you at sales time.

Oh god, I saw that "Switching from Vita to 3DS" thread and I just want to scream at everyone who posted. Don't go in that thread or you will probably die from spontaneous combustion.

I didn't think it would head in that direction, time to read up on that thread :/

I picked up a stack of 12 3DS games recently thinking "Oh maybe these will be interesting". Played most of them and just do not give a shit about ANY of them. Kid Icarus controls horribly, RE Revelations feels sloppy even with the CPP, Mario Kart 7 was disappointing, Super Mario 3D Land went from "alright" to "wank" at the halfway point, NSMB2 is more of the same again, Mario & Luigi Dream Team is the worst game in the series I've played (and the only one I haven't played is Partners in Time), Mario Tennis just remains brutally uninteresting, Fire Emblem I just cannot get into to save my life, Bit Trip Saga doesn't have left handed controls, Animal Crossing is basically a cow clicker in the form of a $70 package...my god.

Meanwhile there's always something interesting on the Vita every week. At least, if it's not NEW, it's at least INTERESTING.

This is the other coin of being too negative regarding 3DS games. I gotta say, I enjoy playing tons of 3DS games despite not playing through many games quickly like the vita. I tend to play them at a slower rate but they tend to be quite special and offer distinct type of games that are a bit lacking on the vita, namely Japanese made games. Pullblox was great, I've put 133 hours on Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, Mario 3D Land was fantastic in my opinion etc.

I can't tell if you're being 100% serious or you're exaggerating to make your point cross.

Corpse Party is primarily an atmosphere game - and the 2D is crucial to this. Visual exposition and high-fidelity visuals would only take away from it (second one having a lot more explicit art did not work as well for me). That said - when I say atmosphere - it's not about doing jump/boo-scares.
If you're looking for those then Silent Hill 0 will be more up your alley.

Totobeni said:
while I got some fun with it, it wasn't scary and did nothing for me "horror" wise.
I'd hardly played any horror game that did anything in scare-department for me. But Corpse Party is disturbing on levels that make Silent Hill 2 feel like a cosy place to be, and the way gameplay reflects the most disturbing elements was really quite brilliant IMO.
