Screenwriter David Franzoni (Gladiator) has optioned rights to adapt Park Chan-wook's 2000 hit Joint Security Area.

The film is a controversial drama about the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea -- using the backdrop of the U.S.-Mexico border and illegal immigration.

Under the deal, Franzoni also will make his directing debut on the as-yet-untitled remake.

How in the hell can this be done? Look... I could accept, but not be entirely thrilled about Sassy Girl, Marrying the Mafia, and Oldboy, but JSA is something that is about a divided country; brother against brother in a conflict that touches on an extremely poignant nerve to many Koreans and those of Korean descent. It's a film that captures the futility of the conflict between the two sides, and the stragic stalemate that they're in.

Mexicans and the U.S.? Good God. Words cannot express how pissed I am by this news.

There was supposed to be a Metroid movie, too... I don't think this will ever happen. Hollywood can't be THAT creatively bankrupt/dumb.

It's easier to tug at some people's heartstrings rather than to get their mental cogs a'turnin'.
