Wall Street Ps3 Launch Estimates

Pacific Crest Securities expects Sony's next-gen console to arrive in force by Thanksgiving, pegs Euro-launch for 2007.

At the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month, Sony executives delivered a keynote address about its vision for the "digital future." But although Sony touted the PlayStation group as one of the cornerstones of its plan, it gave few new details about the forthcoming PlayStation 3. The only concrete information came in the form of a brief aside from Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Kaz Hirai saying that the PS3 is "a key pillar of Sony growth in 2006."

The death of official information from Sony has forced Wall Street analysts to once again put on their prognostication hats. The latest industry-expert augury comes from Pacific Crest Securities' Evan Wilson, who believes the PlayStation 3 won't launch until November, versus the "Spring 2006" window announced at E3 2005. Speaking to the Investor's Business Daily, Wilson also said the "the most likely scenario" is for Sony to ship around 1 million PS3s in North America by the end of the year. That's nearly three times as many Xbox 360s Microsoft sent to US and Canadian stores in 2005.

One reason for the delay--and the greater number of units--is that Sony is almost certain to wait until they gain a greater "chip yield" of its vaunted new Cell processor. In layman's terms, that means the company is waiting until it fine-tunes the manufacturing process to get a maximum number of usable processors possible per batch of silicon. Though such a move would delay the PS3 launch, it might not be such a bad idea. The Xbox 360's launch was marred by massive console shortages--shortages Microsoft executives have attributed to manufacturing issues.

As for other territories, Wilson predicts that the PS3 will follow the model of the PSP, debuting in Japan first, most likely in the summer, followed by the console's North American launch. He believes the PS3 will arrive in Europe last, sometime in early 2007.

Wonder how accurate that is. Wall Street analysts don't usually make claims like that without being pretty sure of things.

Guesses aren't even needed. Q3 earnings come out soon. Sony can announce initial PS3 projections then, or they can wait for the fiscal year report in early-April. My guess is they'll at least give a launch window update in February, with shipment projections coming at the annual meeting.

The reason I believe the April meeting will be when we get projections for the year, is b/c they just tend to do those announcements then. One year ends, and so they want to review the past, and give the investors a look at the future. With PS3 being such a large chunk of revenue this year (assuming the high price and any quantities over 5M), they'll probably want to let that be known. Especially if they arent showing strong signs of recovery company-wide yet.

Wall Street analysts are just trying to justify their pay by giving an early opinion. I don't know if production has started, so I can't see how they could forecast expectations, unless they're using past trends alone. PEACE.

so wall street analysts are predicting a Nov. 2006 launch for PS3 in NA?

I wish I made as much as a wall street analyst. I have been saying that for a year now. :(

Yet another set of prognostications that are way off with the 2007 Europe release being the most egregious. No way in hell that SCEE will push the release into 2007.

can we wait until feb? Someone mentioned EA's NDAs expire Feb 1st. Sony has *something* planned for Feb. Obviously, if we get through next month with few to no announcements, it ain't happening.

You kiddin'? They'll move that in a weekend.

Yeah, but I'll pre-order and if they've got 1Mil I probably won't fucked over on that. It was terrible how some people who pre-ordered X360 back in May 2005 STILL didn't get their system at launch.

Would it not be a smarter move to release the PS3 in US before Japan? I mean, the 360 barely exists over there.

Not if they have terrible launch supply. They should to come out of the gate very strong, both in the number of consoles and a good overall launch line-up. Holiday 2006 is perfect for NA.

So they will announce in spring when they're going to launch in spring.

Sure. It would be smarter, but it would also be an insult to the Japanese people and developers in terms of pride. They won't do it.

Chittagong is already suggesting in the other PS3 ship thread he has heard Sony could get the hardware ready now if they chose too. So it sounds like more of a software issue than hardware issue at the moment.

If Sony has the hardware ready, I think August/September 2006 in NA would be perfect. They could sell out one million units at launch in August/Sept 2006, then get enough supply to sell another million or so units in November/December 2006. To me, PSP NA launch was one of the smartest launches I have seen for a piece of hardware, in terms of timing. PSP had good sales in March April, things went ok until October when things really slowed down, but then November and especially December the PSP received another huge boost in sales.

Launch info in Feb, shipment projections in April. I don't expect them to give shipping figures until April. They won't be launching before then anyway, since FY ends 3/31/06. They don't need to give quantities with launch dates. The JP launch date has to be announced in Feb, or they won't launch until Fall...IMO. PEACE.

I too am starting to think that launching during the holiday season is dumb. If you launch during Christmas you force the early adopters and holiday shoppers to fight for consoles. The launch and holidays are the biggest time to move systems, might as well take advantage of both spikes in demand.
