Wanted: Dead |OT| Ex-Team Ninja Gun Fu

It got Godhanded upon release. It's genuinely a fun game that doesn't take itself seriously. The combat system, once you get the hang of it, flows really well, with the exception of some of the bosses. That helicopter guy........
Its also the closest thing we have to Ninja Gaiden 2 from a gameplay perspective. Not so much the melee but the way tons of enemies are thrown at the player.

The game was developed by ex Ninja Gaiden devs and which made it a selling point when it released.
I'm playing this for the first time on Steam Deck. Great stuff. I jumped in mostly blind and loving it. Harder than I thought it would be.
It was insanely harder before the big update. I played it on hard when it first came out and if you didnt parry the ninjas perfectly every time you would die.

It's 6 bucks on PSN. Bought it for ps5 to go again. Loved it on PC. We need a sequel or spiritual successor. This is my kind of game.

Grenade!

I did give this game a recommendation on Steam. In the end, I enjoyed it well enough. But dang, so many cheap deaths.

Check this channel out, btw. Dude is a bit crazy about gameplay purism but totally on the level when it comes to action game analysis.

I always loved team ninja games but this here is just too janky, too unbalanced, too undercooked and too unfair to be enjoyable.
I don't have the patience not the time anymore to try and find the good in so much dirt .

There IS something good beneath it all, but I'm afraid this is just not worth it.
My opinion.

btw, if anyone thinks this will be like ninja gaiden or any other character action, it's really not. You've got 7th gen tps with melee combat that imo traces back farther than that.

The melee is a lot more restrictive than most character action. Took me several hours to get a real feel for it but I like it a lot now.

Fair. Gameplay feels unique enough to me that I can live with a lot of little weaknesses, but they are all over.

If you already own it, watching this video and applying the techniques will allow you to find the flow in gameplay.

6 Eurodollars is the right price for this shite, the fucking gall they had releasing this at 60, lol, LMAO even...

Listen, everyone has his preferences - and especially tolerances when it comes to bad games , but, between the atrocious and REPETITIVE VO's ("GrEnAaAaDE !!!"/"CoMe hErE FuCKaaHH!"), mediocre as fuck graphics, mediocre, limited and repetitive gameplay (you're gonna be using the same, 2 most efficient combos all the time), bad direction and general jankiness, there's not much to like here, in fact 90% of the game's budget must have gone for the Maserati logo usage and licensed tracks.
Said it before but this game feels like a money laundering scam, to think this is anywhere close to "good" would be just for the sake of being a contrarian, there's nothing "endearing" about it, there's nothing fun nor funny, it's not even a "so bad it's good" type of game , it's just a C- product and that's being generous.

For 6-10 bucks max I suppose you could have 1-2 evenings of "fun" (ie, satisfying a morbid curiosity).

To even propose that this is anywhere near good like Ninja Gaiden 2 though is pure blasphemy

This is going to be exactly the takeaway for a lot of people. Got destroyed in reviews. I'd have major caveats about recommending at full price because it's going to be live/hate. Having played the game now, I would have paid full and been happy.

3 euros in instant gaming, crazy I might buy it to play in the future

Had my eyes on this for a while, at that price it was a no brainer. Thanks for the heads up.

Not nearly as good as NG2, but sometimes it feels very similar. They really have something there, just need to further flash it out.

Wasn't there supposed to be another patch?

As much as I didn't like it I agree there are moments where it reminded me of the old team ninja games.
Something in the foundation of the game is definitely right

Captured some footage while playing the game. All footage was caught from "Hard" mode:

Also, cool trophy moment caught on "Normal" mode right after encountering and defeating the third boss for the first time:

I finally finished it on the Japanese Hard mode. I had skipped over "Hard", so I went back to mop that up and blew right through the game. The Japanese Hard is MUCH harder.

Anyway, now that I'm an expert lol....

This game fucking rules. I would say I like it more than other character action games I've played over the last several years, but that's not quite right. I do like it better, but because it's not that kind of game. It's just hard to shake the impression when you are chopping up hella dudes. Just looks like that kind of game.

I've managed to turn a 6 hour game into a 60 hour game. I'm obsessed lol. I told myself the japanese hard clear would be all for me but couldn't help myself. When I went back to do the hard mode run, my excuse was that i'd stream it since I am now pretty good at the game. Now I want to play again. Maybe for time. Wife thinks I'm crazy.

While I still understand how some would think it's downright bad, I have to disagree that's actually the case once you are familiar with it. The writing and vo is bad, the minigames reach a troll-ish level of bad (it only makes you play two once each, but they are each a painful 5 minutes and really stick in the memory).

Other than that, though? Graphics and music are at least serviceable. Control and moveset are excellent, enemy designs and ai/patterns are great. Difficulty curve is good with every level getting noticeably more demanding. Level design is subtly great. And best of all the learning curve is long and linear. I could feel that progress with myself, that git gud, building all the time and I can still do better because I died on that J-Hard mode so many times. I was stuck on some sections for many tries but was having a good time the whole way because my desire to "progress" had been completely replaced with the desire to just do it better.

Love this game. I see a boxed collectors edition on ebay and I NEVER buy shit like that but I want a souvenir of my time with the game and I got it criminally cheap for how much I got out of it.

I've been taking notes on it because I have a dev friend who gets stumped and needs help sometimes. This game is expertly made, and not for critics. Take just the basic standing attack on the square button: Intuitively, this should be a fast attack with medium or short range. Here, they made it long and slow. I won't get into why I thought that was a great move - the point is it's going to bother people because it's different than the established convention.

I could go on and on. This game got it's teeth in me in a bad way and it's one of my favorites in a while.

The box/game case (and especially the limited edition) are - in fact - better than the game itself 😁

I also turned this 7-8 hours game into a 45+ hours one but, I'd still consider it a money laundering scam.
Yes, you CAN have some fun with it when the combat system and flow "click" when you're chopping dudes left and right ala' John Wick, but, the game is way too janky, has too many flaws, has a low budget which is actually detrimental to the whole experienece and generally speaking - and always IMO - is just a cheap, shallow experience through and through.

It's the most 5/10 game I've ever played, shame, since it could have been something MUCH better (same as Devil's 3rd).

You didn't like it and you played 45 hours?!?!?!?

Well nobody can say you didn't give it a fair shot.

Damn I love this game. Got the platinum trophy last year after they decided to patch the fucking game to fix the trophies. I really enjoyed it, it felt old school, with tight controls and a bit surreal as well. Hetzog fucking cracked me up as well. Game seems to already be a cult
classic like God Hand etc. I forsee the game being talked about years from now about how good it actually is. I mean, it's not the greatest game ever made. But combat is amazing and fun. Wish I could platinum it again.

Sounds good. That's next up on my list.

The game has been kinda... "tame" thus far. You can sort of tell the developers nerfed it in some areas.

Btw, whoever gave this a "4/10" is a charlatan. Games like this require exploration, experimentation and patience in its mechanics. Something the guy from IGN clearly didn't possess.

That 4/10 is going to be accurate for a lot of people. :/ This game is really kind of a deep cut. For instance I have a friend I highly recommended stellar blade to. He loved that. But I wouldn't suggest he try this. He's going to approach it the way he would stellar blade and it would not be fun for him.

It got patched, making it much easier than it was on release.

It really depends how much you're willing and able to find the good stuff beneath the layers and layers of jankiness and cheapness.

There IS something good in there if you're really motivated to find it.

I wasn't.

Heh, I know man 🤣
Seriously now, the reason I kept playing was the fact that i like action games and punishing ones at that, what can I say, I'm a masochist...
Also : it's a "shut your brain off" type of game which can get kind of relaxing when under stress.

Again, the most frustrating thing about the game is that SPORADICALLY, it shows some brief moments of brilliance (when you get "in the zone" and you're slow-mo chopping dudes left and right), these nice moments get buried under a ton of junk though in the form of TERRRRRRIIIBBBLE voice overs, terrible mini games , terrible navigation and bugs ahoy.

What this game could have been man with a proper budget...

It's a shame since the main Character design is nice and cool looking (not many red headed women in games you see), the story...tried to go somewhere and the anime cutscenes are actually a nice touch but, again, that jank man, it was overwhelming...

Is there any difference between hard before the patch and japanese hard? I beat it once when it first came out on hard before the difficulty patch. Thinking about giving it another go.

Regarding "unfair" reviews, I can think of three solutions.

1. Have a specialist reviewer on staff for action games, fighting games, and stuff like that.

2. Have multi-person reviews, with one of those people specializing in the genres.

3. Most realistic - we learn the lesson that IGN is not the best source for this sort of thing and seek out reviewers who've shown they know what they're talking about.

edit: Just bought a sealed special edition for posterity :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Well, W: D bros, I've graduated and joined the "Japanese hard" magna cum laude club.

Recorded some "Japanese hard" footage:

Onto chilling out with "Neko-chan" mode and some mini games.

Just got the platinum. Recorded footage for Punished Miku Punished Miku and the W: D gang :

Wanted-Dead-platinum-unlock.jpg

Conclusion: Awesome game. It gets really good once you take your time to adjust to the learning curve, get deep into its system and start stringing/combining several moves together. My tip for anyone whose new or hesitant about the game: start investing into the defence skill tree ASAP. It'll ease your playthrough. Parrying and follow-up slashes are the way to go. Then, you can take it from there and start experimenting around.

Imo this game deserves a sequel to build and refine the base it introduced. Soleil is definitely onto something with the combat system they've developed and it would be an absolute shame if the studio didn't get the chance to follow it up. A solid 7~7.5/10 at minimum (8/10 and up, if you're a big fan of the genre; which I am).

My main gripe is the game length. 7-10 stages would've been ideal imo. Would've liked to have seen more crazy bosses.

Dang, platinum is super impressive. I couldn't max out the karaoke and I didn't beat the shmup. Badass dude. :messenger_bicep:

Bought it for every platform, great game. Finished it 3 or 4 times now but will get the Platinum later in the year.
