HBS' BattleTech game from a few years back is basically this. You run a mercenary Mech company in BattleTech universe.

The real XCOM 3. The first game was pretty good and the sequel seems interesting.

XCOM 3 if Paradox made it because everyone needs some Grand Strategy in their XCOM. Long War modders are involved in this one, I think.

Great games! Still haven't actually sat down and played more then a few hours of Xenonauts 2 and Terra Invicta, but once they hit 1.0 it's going to eat up the majority of my free time.

It will take a miracle to save these games and this studio.

I need to figure out how to use this on Linux.
What base version does it require? The original dos versions?

It works just fine with the Steam or GoG versions.

If you're using Arch, there is a repo on the AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/openxcom
I believe there's also a Ubuntu PPA.

Or you can install it manually (it's what they recommend for now, since a new milestone release is coming up, so you should use the nightlies):

I still need to play XCOM 2. I own it even.

XCOM 2 is nice. XCOM 2 plus War of the Chosen is easily one of my favorite games in the last two decades and up there in the top three of the best tactical games ever made.

Yup. It's dead.
I concluded that with Chimera Squad.

However X-com 2 is fantastic.
It's big DLC War of the Chosen is a fantastic high note to go out on.
