Was Roseanne really not that fat?

I caught an old episode of Roseanne the other day on TV, the one where they find her old pot. And I noticed she wasn't really that fat. I always thought she was a big fatty, but by today's standards she was pretty svelt actually. She was no twiggy, but my brain always pictured her a lot bigger in my memories.

Maybe she was fatter before or after I don't remember. Were all the fat jokes about her overblown?

More about how the character sees herself. I have never watched Rosanne, this is a guess.

Greatest OT thread title ever possibly.

But it depends on what season you were watching OP - she got pretty extensive plastic surgery and liposuction after the show became a hit. John Goodman regularly got liposuction too.

Edit: is liposuction still done or was that a 90s fad? You don't hear about it much.

Standards decreased as much as chin sizes.

That's true. When the show premiered in 1989, Roseanne was much fatter than the average 35 year old American woman. Not sure when obesity rates really skyrocketed, but it was probably not long after that. Look at a group photo from anytime between 1950 and 1985 and overweight people are generally few and far between.

American women are much fatter 30 years later. I would link to the discussion of the latest cover of Cosmo lionizing an obese woman as healthy, but that thread got got.

John Goodman definitely was. I watched Arachnophobia the other night and he looked super unhealthy. Like maybe he wouldn't live another 15 years.

Of course, if you look at him now it's obvious he decided to change his habits and turn his life around.

How old was John Goodman then? He always looked much older than he must have been.
EDIT: late 30's when the show started. On the plus side up until he lost all the weight he never aged.

She was never as fat as Dan.

But remotely fat women being successful was particularly rare back then, so maybe that's why you thought she was a huge porker and not just normal fat?

Her face looked really fat at the start of the show but then I guess she lost some weight and looked more normal. She looked like an eskimo during season 1.

Eh not really. She was chubby and top heavy so she always look much huger than she actually was because she had the legs of a chicken. She wasn't even as big as Ricki Lake around the same time.
Ricki Lake in Cry Baby could get the D

I thought the same thing when I saw him in O Brother Where Art Thou which came out years later.

Another ABC show that did this was the Drew Carey Show. They made him out to be morbidly obese and realistically, I thought he looked ok.

Outside of the grey hair Drew is aging pretty well. I think he's got a wife like 20 years younger than him so that's probably helping lol.

Another one I was thinking of is Homer Simpson. Millions of jokes are made in the show about how obese he is, but not only are there regular characters that are fatter than he is, like Chief Wiggum, but there was one episode where he became even more obese, showing that his regular self is big but not that big.

After whose line drew lost a bunch of weight. I thought he looked 20 years older
Something that people (and plastic surgeons) starting realizing a while back was that big chipmunk cheeks tend to make you look more youthful. What happens when you gain weight? Your cheeks get bigger. What happens when you lose weight?
