Wasteland 2 Beta is Available

Amazing week or so for my Kickstarters -- WL2 beta today, SotA (don't laugh at me, please!) alpha tomorrow, Divinity: OS next week.

I only pledged $50... oh well I feel like I'd rather wait for the full release.

Good luck to everyone in beta, hope it goes well.

Yeah, I'll probably hold off on the beta as well. I dropped a hundo on the Kickstarter, but I'd rather wait until the final product.

Yeah the stream makes the game look really good. They definitely improved the details and the game seems to run smoothly. Glad i backed this. If this is a hit it only adds to the funding of Torment and Wasteland sequel. This is good stuffs.

Game lost it's shit when I tried to change the rendering res to 4K and I had to close it, but otherwise it's running well here (i7 960, 8GB DDR3, 780).

The sequels could be self-funded!

But wouldn't that defeat the purpose of Kickstarter?

Isn't that the purpose of Kickstarter? Get your company off the ground so you can be self-sufficient.

Release the sequel without Kickstarter funds and they don't have to worry about Amazon fees, Paypal fees, the Kickstarter cut (I don't know if this exists), physical/digital rewards eating into their funds, etc.

Considering how much of inXile's Torment pitch revolved around explaining why they needed to dip into the Kickstarter funding pool for a second time I'd be a little surprised if they crowd-funded a hypothetical Wasteland 3 rather than fund development themselves from revenues generated by their Kickstarter projects. Their messaging's been pretty clear that they're trying to create an environment where they're not beholden to external publishers and can become self-supporting.

I thought the Wasteland 2 and Torment funding projects seemed to indicate pretty strongly that inXile wasn't trying to make Kickstarter a perpetual part of their development process.

I held your sense of humor in much higher regards, .exe.

It seems my trust was misplaced.

I forgot who had said it but I know one of the larger gaming kickstarter developers gave the impression that they will always be going back regardless of success. I think most fans would prefer self funding developers but for them it is an easy decision to take the money in advance.

On a happy note I party wiped in the AG centre.

Kickstarter is a goldmine becasue people are too stupidly generous and it's all about marketing.

It's basically no strings attached money. No publisher is going to spend money out of pocket to develop the game when they can effectively get their development costs for free.

Love the character creator. Options! Limited choices! I just hope I don't end up being god like by the end like in every other RPG of this type.

Can you not buy it off their website? Almost all KS games let you still buy packages to get into beta phases.

Brian Fargo's apparently watching a guy playing the beta on Twitch according to Twitter so if anyone is interested in seeing how it plays here you go:

I`m watching the beta right now, and it looks quite good. It looks like the deep and engaging RPG that they promised it would be! Plus roughly 10 hours of game time for the Beta sounds impressive. The Shadowrun Returns RPG could be completed in that 10 hour time frame.

I imagine the temptation to keep going back to the Kickstarter well is pretty strong, yeah. If you can put together a strong pitch it's practically gratis moolah. I just didn't really get the impression that that was really what inXile was going for, but who knows what they'll end up doing once it's time to start on their post-Torment project. They spent enough time on the Torment pitch justifying their return to Kickstarter that I thought it seemed like they didn't necessarily want to continue relying on it, but who knows. Perhaps the siren's song will bring them back to the uncharted isles of crowdfunding again. There's a reason I said that I'd only be a little surprised if they made it a Kickstarter three-fer, really.

This combat looks like it has a lot more depth than Shadowrun as well.

This is the only game Kickstarter I have paid into, because OG Wasteland was a master piece, but I think I will wait until its done. Heck, I've waited over 20 years already.

Oh man, I could spend hours on character creation. I'll probably just mess around with a game a bit just to see how it plays like, then put it on hold. Don't want to ruin my first real playthrough.

I suck at this particular type of RPG...looks great and plays great. Still need to figure out all the systems. Lost my main character because I didn't really know what to do to heal.

Probably look over the reference card and see if I can do better. The music, writing, setting are all fantastic though.

Damn, I backed at $50. Ah well, I'll be playing it eventually anyway. Game is looking pretty good so far.

You can pay another 5 dollars in the backer store to get in beta, but it changes your pledge to a digital only tier. You would have to go to $75 to get a physical boxed copy.

Intrigued, will probably just wait till full release though. Haven't been following this one, though I've backed Torment, SotA, and Star Citizen.
