How many people are lining up for Rocawear sneakers?

I didn't bring up Beethoven, I'm simply arguing that the comparison isn't so far fetched. If you're looking for the Beethoven of rap, you can easily bring up Kanye. I don't know how much historians will look at Kanye, but I can tell you that he's contributed as much to his genre of music as Beethoven.

things move so fast nowadays compared to even 150 years ago. Music is constantly changing big every 20 years. Crazy to think that Snoop or Dre (first big shift) have been in the game for over 20 years when rap is only a little over 30 years old itself. Kanye for a third of all hip-hops life and still very influential expanding it.

Hahahahahaahahahahaahahahahahahaha.

Jesus Christ.
Can we just start banning people now? Hardly anyone here is making actual discussion and the majority of posts are shit like this.

And to the above poster, i agree. Although Kanye's success has only lasted about ten years at this point, I don't see him losing relevance any time soon when he gets such buzz for everything he dies.

So he's universally admired and loved in the hip-hop community? He has transformed the genre with his songwriting skills? And in the history of hip-hop, you'd say he's the most influential rapper?

Beethoven was very influential in symphonic music and Kanye is a big star and has been influential in hip-hop the last 10 years is the main talking point.

Is that it? Seems like such a watery comparison there's no point in making it.

I mean, a list of hows would be handy from anyone seriously pursuing this line of argument.

When a lover of Beethoven once ran up against a critic of Bee's line of powdered wigs catering to the ultra-rich, he wrote the journal in question and had his opponent's address removed from the circulation list.

please ...! how did he contributed to hip hop or rap , in any new way that wasn't done before ,
am no rap expert but i heard some of his stuff , please link me to what you think his historical achievement to the genre .

this is small potatoes compared to what guys like Ozwald Boateng and Oliver Rousting were doing before they hooked up with Givenchy and Balmain
I guess it could be considered small potatoes (though I have a feeling more people know about the Air Yeezys than any specific item from those luxury houses) than actually starting from the bottom and working his way into the fashion world like other designers but he also points out that his time is more valuable to him.

Seems like laying the brick work with a company that will never be as big as the ones he could just partner with today (at least not for a significant amount of time earning his due as a designer) isn't appealing to him, when he has ideas NOW that he wants to reach as many people as possible.

Btw that avy is awesome lol.

At this point in time, yes. Without Kanye, we can't have Kendrick. It's almost hyperbole, I'll admit, but not so many rappers have been able to consistently release great albums and maintain relevance like him. Again, i didn't bring up Beethoven, I'm just saying the comparison isnt so far fetched. I'd personally be more comfortable comparing him to Elvis or Miles Davis.

Elvis and Miles Davis shouldn't even be compared to one another holy shit.

Sean Combs keeps showing up in Ibiza only to get booed and/or laughed off the stages. Kanye is just following in his footsteps, except he gets laughed out of board meetings.

Because what you're saying is so off base that it's not even worth arguing.

You probably shouldn't be talking about banning people seeing as your still on probation junior. Kanye isn't even close to the most influential rapper, how could you even compare him to someone like Beethoven? Maybe if you chose a different (and better rapper) I could understand the comparison. However right now you just look stupid.

He is really not enjoying that, love how he is refusing to look the interviewer into the yes but stares at the camera half the time instead. :lol

and I really mean love it, he's a bit crazy but I love that, it's all much more fun with people like him in the news.

The thing is, in Kanye's mind Beethoven, Elvis and Miles Davis no doubt totally pale in comparison to him.

Can't believe I'm typing Kanye in the same sentence as them...

It's not really hard to understand why Kanye is so angry, but he sucks at explaining himself and he really needs to learn how to articulate his thoughts and deliver them... or hire a speech/presentation coach, lol

Oh man

Forget fucking Charlamagne, the Sway interview is a instant classic

I have never seen such a wall of hate for one person on Neogaf. Yes, Kanye rambles and is incoherent, but too many of you are shitting on aspects of his life indiscriminately. Markedly, his music, and it's clear a lot of you don't know shit about hip-hop.

Kanye's one of the most lauded current rappers period, critically and among his peers. He's many a rapper's top five. He's going to die as one of hip-hop's greats, and one of the era's biggest pop figures, whether you like him or not. I get that you hate Kanye, and I get that Kanye fans(some trolls) get out of hand with the comparisons.

Regardless, you need to give credit where credit is due, and if you don't know much about the genre and are laughing at this idea, then by all means, shut the fuck up.

And this is coming from someone who hates MBDTF, Kanye's current music, and his messages in and out of the studio.

What? A simple google search could probably help you. Look at the landscape of hip-hop after college dropout. Completely changed everything. After 808's, same thing. Ask rap artists who their influences are, you'll start hearing names like Tupac, Biggie, Nas, and yes, Kanye (among others). Regardless of what you think of him, his impact is something you can't ignore.

Fashion in hip-hop was flipped on it's head when Kanye entered. Polos and backpacks. Hence the term, "backpack rap".

No matter how great his music used to be, no matter how hard you defend him, you have no right to tell people to shut the fuck up on a message board.

If Kanye would just shut the fuck up and make his music it'd be all good. I generally like his music except for his temper tantrum called Yeezus.

But he doesn't. He keeps blabber that whack shit that make me shake my head and be like: "Is my dude serious with what he's saying? With what he's doing?"

I'm not shitting on his talent. He obviously has that. But if he could...you know...just make music and shut the fuck up...that'd be great. Personally I'd be too busy fucking the shit out of Kim Kardashian to be opening my mouth on that whack shit. "You know, the industry is hating...cause they wouldn't let me design shoes the way I wanted to!"....

And don't get me started on the Confederate Flag shit....

Backpack rap came from underground rappers and rap fans who would carry backpacks filled with mixtapes, merch and weed everywhere. Backpack rap is Immortal Technique and Aesop Rock.

Ye did shift hip-hop fashion though.

He's also probably the most influential producer and rapper of the 00s/10s.

What's wrong with trying to turn the Confederate Flag into the Kanye symbol to troll racists?

I'm talking production and style. The soul sound took over hip hop after the College Dropout. 808s & Heartbreaks opened the door for Drake's career. How can you deny the changes he ushered in? The rap artist today looks much different from what it was when he rose to fame. The thug gimmick died down after CD and LR and now middle class rappers can be more successful in the game. A better comparison is one to Elvis because of his stardom. His career's been to short to make a more a credible comparison to someone like Beethoven, I agree.

I don't dislike Kanye's music, but comparing him to Miles Davis is offensive. People like him and Beethoven didn't just influence their genres, they've influenced artistic expression in general.

I'm pretty sure he just said he got tailored leather pants that were too tight so they ripped, then he got a second pair and they ripped. So God said unto him wear a skirt in Chicago, because God wanted him to prove how much he was an artist.

Kanye would have a much easier time with his public perception if he didn't have an ego twice the size of Texas and he knew how to give a speech/answer questions. His rants draw a lot of criticism, for which some of it deserved and other that really stupid along the lines of:

"I don't know anything about Hip-Hop, I don't like Kanye West as a person because of his ego, and he can't deliver a precise, coherent message = his music sucks and he's a worthless idiot with no talent and nothing good to contribute"

^ Summarizes half of the GAF's feeling of Kanye.

Problem is he's not "trolling" racists. Him fucking Kim is what pisses off racists. But that shit? Get the fuck outta here. I'm sure there are some of his fans that will cosign whatever the fuck he does. 120$ tshirts, confederate flag and whatever. But don't delude yourself. He's not trolling. He's embarrassing everyone that fought hard to get that symbol removed and rejected from modern society.

"Oh, Kanye is wearing a confederate flag!? Guess I'll wear one too and troll those racists!". Like I said if he just shut the fuck up and stick to make records he'd be fine. His problem is his ego.

I don't dislike Kanye's music, but comparing him to Miles Davis is offensive. People like him and Beethoven didn't just influence their genres, they've influenced artistic expression in general.

I wonder how young a person is when they compare Kanye West to Miles Davis. I mean, holy shit...

Which is Ye's whole thing but y'all laugh him out of the building before he even has a chance to flinch.

He's not saying Ye is as good an artist as Miles, He's saying Ye has that kind of impact on his genre. Which is objectively true.

it is incredible. the level of righteousness of the majority of the members here who blatantly make points that flag them as uninformed yet they still act as if they are clearly understanding the situation. you don't even know power 105! they are sensationalist as fuck. DJ ENVY LITERALLY STATED TO KANYE "YOU SAID YOU WANNA SHOOT THE PRESIDENT IN THE HEAD" he literally said that on air. KANYE HAS NEVER SAID THAT. but he says that broadcasting on air to thousands. yet kanye is out of his mind.

And Kanye hasn't? How has Miles Davis inspired art in a way Kanye hasn't? Most people don't even know an album he's played on.

The problem is that he knows a little bit about popular issues, but he feels the need to try to spout off on them like he's an expert. Like someone mentioned before, it's like he took Philosophy 101 and now he's suddenly an expert and arguing with everyone because they had a taste of some knowledge.

I love when artists have a message, I just want that message to make some fucking sense.
