Watch_dogs: Wind, Water, light effects - [PS4 version confirmed]

The lighting looks good in this vid. Why was is it non-existent in places in the previous trailer?
Well, let's start saying this is a techdemo on a dev kit. Nothing that will necessarily translate 1:1 in a final product, regardless of the version.
That said, there are chances to see the game improving from the previous trailers, I guess.

I can see someone's salt melting now

Absolutely hilarious if this was actually PS4 version all along.
Sucks for them kids who were shitting themselves over the "console downgrade" and getting ready to jack one off over their PC graffiks when they were actually the same thing.

I'm not invested in the debate either way, I think Watch Dogs has looked good in all of its footage. But I do hope some muppet's go a bit red in the face and pull themselves together after this.

OtaQ,

How much does stealth play a role in the game from what you've seen? Can I play a completely-combat free role or are there instances where you have to engage and fight/kill?

Also, original reports suggested that there made no difference narratively if you killed people or not unlike something like Infamous or Dishonoured. Do you know if that's changed?

Cheers.

Like I said earlier, the footage looked bad. I can't believe people were saying that this game was good looking. It was looking good at e3 2012 but it looks very poor now. Complete lighting and texture downgrade is so obvious. The art direction looks poor as well. The most painful downgrade is in the loss of atmosphere. No trash blowing on the street, downgraded cloth physics, etc. It just looks unappealing.
But game art is IDENTICAL to reveal, and trash, leaves, cans have always been blowing around in pretty much all videos since...I am confused?

Some things you say here are simply quesswork.

[UPDATE]

PCGamesHardware has confirmed that what was shown was from the PS4 DevKit and not from the PC version. Naturally that’s not PCGH’s fault as Ubisoft initially claimed that the video was from the PC version.

“This video really is a pain in the ass. Ubisoft told us via e-mail “this is PC footage”. And after we published the video they say “Oops, sorry, this is not PC but PS4 devkit””

Oh Ubi.... You are fucking with us on purpose. :D

Wait, so this not the footage made by PCGamesHardware, but what Ubisoft provided? Well, then it's no guarantee whatsoever.

Wait, that's the PlayStation 4 version?

Uh, doesn't look that good anyway. My GTX 780 Ti can do better.

I guess this is the video game equivalent to the effect where wine tastes better if you think it was expensive.

I still think it's weird they chose for water tesselation on PS4 though. It's probably such a small part of the game. And i wonder if anyone would even notice.
I would be totally fine with Second Son's water, especially if it could free up resources for improvements elsewhere. Unless there's swimming, which I doubt. Guess their dicks were still hard from what they did with AC4's water.

Yeah, you surely are proving yourself to be above these petty disputes.

Infamous SS might be really clean to a console gamer's eye, but I still notice lots of shader aliasing and I'm not satisfied. I like to use a combination of MSAA and SMAA (or sometimes FXAA depending on the game) or super sample anti-aliasing, TXAA, or downsampling.
It also kind of depends on the type of display being used.

On the PC I typically stick to post-process solutions as well simply because on my plasma the improvements SSAA and the like bring to the table are not worth the massive performance hit.

IF you're sitting near a large LCD monitor then these issues become infinitely more noticeable due to close proximity and the sub-pixel make up of the panel. Really, though, I find it highly ironic to see people talking about image quality only to realize they're using an LCD for gaming. I'll never understand it.

Still, SMAA T2x is a really good post process solution. It won't beat post + MSAA or SSAA and the like, of course, but it really doesn't need to in most cases and still looks very clean overall. I don't really like downsampling, though, due to artifacts which are introduced into the image.

I'd consider this good IQ even by PC standards.

Above petty disputes? Moi? No chance, I love one of those as much as the next guy.
I'm just not interested enough in graphics and that to get upset about it.
And there's always room to enjoy a bit of public humiliation of others isn't there?

Smart arse :P

Can someone give an example of water tessellation on and off? I need to check something out.

This April Fools joke is the best thing Ubisoft has done in years.

Blacklist and Rayman Origins/Legends are pretty good.

I am never going to play console wars, specs wars and any of that similar discussions my good GAFfers. I play the games no matter where they are. If a game is good and I'm lucky enough to own said platform I will get it, if I have more than one platform I will choose the one it suits me better for each game.

I own a PC, not a great one but I manage to pull some decent quality settings every now and then. PC-GAF, more exactly Steam-GAF is an amazing community. Very relaxing, kind and always ready to help new members or others with any sort of issues regarding their hardware, software or gaming questions. "Showing off" or having a Elitist attitude towards a certain product over another is just silly. Why can't we have both? And if we can't afford one, why always make wars among ourselves? Same goes for the "PC Master Race" meme, I really dislike it and again, I don't see the purpose of it.

Will this game look good? Yes for some, not at all for others. The reason many people get upset is because some can't understand and respect different opinions. I hope the game can deliver on all platforms and I hope to look good but even if it's going to look good for me it's not going to look for others and that's fine. There's a little something for everyone out there. I love to talk and enter on these gaming discussions but when people start to measure everything instead of having fun, I'm out. I love playing games and I like to talk about them but I must never forget to respect others and I can never forget that it has to be fun to play the games and to talk about them.

I'm sure there will be better looking games in the future and I'm sure this game can already be one of those for many, the important thing in here is to have fun with it as soon as the game releases and if you don't like it, I hope you can find something that will suits you. E3 is just around the corner. ;)

Also, just because SMAA works decently well in this game doesn't mean that it will achieve the same results in other games. SMAA works best with highly contrasted edges and Infamous SS is a very colorful game with high contrast so it's essentially a best case scenario. It also uses a lot of motion blur, depth of field, light shafts and other lighting and post process effects that tend to help conceal the aliasing.

I don't agree that devs won't differentiate PC versions as much as last generation. I'm seeing quite the opposite. This is the very beginning of the generation, which is the time when consoles are nearest to high end PCs that they will ever be, but all of the multiplats I have played so far--Battlefield 4, Thief and AC4--all look quite a bit better on my PC than on my PS4. And like I said, this is the very beginning of the generation. The gap is only going to widen over time.

Jesus christ.

As PS4 footage I am actually satisfied. If the game keeps crowd density at that level with all the dynamic time of day and weather stuff going on it'll actually be quite immersive.

All i have to say is that this is hilarious. Lots of people being exposed in this thread whether it be for having an anti-watchdogs/ubi or anti-ps4 agenda.

No. Most of them are being exposed for knowing nothing about graphics even though they want to think they do have enough knowledge to get by.

I guess this is the video game equivalent to the effect where wine tastes better if you think it was expensive.

At least it was obvious to many from the beginning the PS4 should obviously be able to do all this (not that impressive) stuff.

It's a shame that people's excitement for Watch Dogs is purely based on graphical quality. Am I the only one still intrigued by the game's premise?
That is what I am most looking forward to. I love the idea of a open world game where with the hacking ability you can effect so many things or check out any npc. I love how great the game looks but graphics with out a good game behind it means nothing.

Wait, that's the PlayStation 4 version?

Uh, doesn't look that good anyway. My GTX 780 Ti can do better.

This is a ridiculous comment. Of course it would. Assuming the PC version takes advantage of higher spec machines (as it should) then of course it will do better by a significant margin.

The PS4 version is still looking good. I would be perfectly happy if a similar spec PC was outputting what the PS4 is.

The confusion that came from what Ubi showed back in 2012 and the disappointment that some PS4 users have seeing what it looks like now, is entirely an issue of not disclosing details of the nature of content shown/trying to show the best possible outcome of the game. This issue is one that exists with many games

Was this video made for the purpose of convincing me to switch from the PS4 version to the PC version? Because it's sort of working...

Wait... a small minority were happy that the PC version looked like what was shown?

I saw the video (before it was announced it was the PS4 version) and immediately thought it wasn't special. In fact, I came away saying "...Well it looks nice, but it's no E3 2012".

I wish I had posted my comment earlier, but you'll just have to take my word for it.

But if I'm truly honest, I couldn't care about the game's graphical features, the game itself just doesn't interest me.

And no amount of enhanced tech will change that.

We will wait and see I suppose, the vid does look doable on a PS4 though.

Yes i think that nobody doubts it will look better on a good pc with all extra options enabled
