Wavering over your portable purchase?

I'm 50/50% to get a DS or a PSP.

DS - Jump Super Stars, Mario Kart DS, New Castlevania, New Sonic, Nanostray combined with the awesome RPGness of the GBA with Riverea, Fire Emblem and Sigma Star.

vs

PSP - Awesome nice white model, web browsing, movies, MP3...but fuck me apart from Ridge Racers I'm struggling to think of a game I'd want to play. Help me out here...what's on the horizon for PSP? E3 was a disaster and Sony's conference was flat as a pancake PSP wise.

Madden, Burnout Legends, Daxter, Pursuit Force, GTA, Virtua Tennis, Metal Gear Acid 2, Monster Hunter Portable

FEATURES OVER GAMES TO PLAY!
Hit up a jarrod thread and see which system has the games you want to play. Whichever has more, go for.

I can appreciate Wario64's list. Problem is it's a mini PS2, sitting down in Starbucks for a Mocha and some gaming, do you really want the 'home' experience? - great thing about DS, it gives you something a little different. Decisions...decisions...

How much cash you got?

Couldn't you easily swing both for about $300-350 now? (figure $180-200 for used PSP or $250 for the new white one, $100-120 for a used DS)

Get both, then there's no wavering.

This is why I enjoy my DS more over my PSP for games (other then the emulation on the PSP of course.)

My friends are always telling me "Man fuck the DS have you seen Burnout and Midnight Club 3? They look fucking awesome on the PSP!"

I'd really rather play both of those on Xbox or PS2 if I had the choice. DS gives something a little different and the future lineup looks great.

I have a PSP. No regrets. One of the best video game purchases I've ever made and easily the best handheld I've ever owned.

You've got to be careful about not short-selling the ability to play console equivalent games on the go. It's very liberating and while I'm not a big traveler or anything or even a public transportation guy, I get 2 hours a day out of my PSP for games with the John, lunch, shopping w/ the lady, and just hanging out.

I normally wouldn't buy any console games over again, but since I don't get 100% of the console games out there, I'll judiciously choose the PSP version over the console version where appropriate (Ridge Racer, Hot Shots Golf, Virtua Tennis, Monster hunter, as examples)

The DS is fast catching up to the SP as my favorite handheld owned. I just couldn't find anything to play on the PSP other than Lumines. The best thing is, I can play my favorite GBA games (marios, wario wares, etc...) on the DS.

Sounds like you'd find ways to make use of, enjoy, and ultimately justify both, so that's definitely the route I'd go. I have both as well, and I'll admit that I play the DS a shit-ton more.

The only decision is to get both.

You like 3D games? Get a PSP.

Like old-school 2D or quirky games? Get a DS.

Like both? Get both.

Easy!

Well, Microsoft supports DS. That help? :P

Ack! Don't pick up Monster Hunter Portable over the console versions, it's ad-hoc only. :/

Not wavering at all. I won't buy either of them.

$150 is too much for a little trinket system. $250 is WAY too much for a trinket system. There's obviously a market out there for that stuff, but it just isn't me. Maybe if the PSP was $99. Then portable games.... why in the world would I want to spend real game money for something I would have to look at on a pitifully small screen? Meh x2.

Handheld gaming is best left to kids in the backseat of their parents' car.

In 1987, most would have told you "Video games are best left to kids in the basement of their parents' house".

I'd wage to say in less than 5 years, portable gaming won't have the same old "Only for kids" stigma.

A white DS with Mario Kart, Castlevania, MMBN, Trauma Center, Phoenix Wright, Nintendogs and Pokemon +more.
How can it be wrong when it feels so right?

I would say buy both... if you can only get one, then I can only really offer one side of the story.

I already have a DS, and it's great. I won't be getting a PSP at launch because I think €250 is too much of a big ask with Xbox 360 not far off, but I certainly will get one eventually.

Dunno if this helps, but I very much don't regret buying my DS. Stylus gaming when done right is the most involving thing I've ever experienced. Which is funny because the second screen fights such involvement by it's very design.

If by different, you mean shitty, shitty, shitty, shitty, shit, that happened to be eaten and shat out again and then eaten once more.

Also, do you dislike the home experience? The home experience is what I consider the "good" experience.

imo, they're quite different.

psp - portable multimedia computer with home console games

ds - truly innovative gaming with gba compatibility

they both have flaws and strengths, you have to ask yourself what would you use it for?

Well, by the way you're talking, it seems like you would be much better off with a DS, since you seem to want innovation over what it little more than a portable PS2, gaming wise.

That's not to say PSP doesn't have games for it (it had a MUCH better launch than DS, although DS has caught up to it in quality games by now), because it does, but looking at the rest of this year's games, PSP vs. DS, DS wins by a large portion.

Personally, I have both. You should get the one interests you the most and try and save up for the other within the next few months.

With that out of the way..

You must not have owned many handhelds then, because I'd find it very hard to think PSP or DS were the "Best handheld I've ever owned" since they both have a very small number of games worth owning right now..

You really need to stop being so retarded. Jesus christ. How about you actually help the guy out instead of being a stupid troll?

I own a Pisp and love the fucker. I just got Ape Escape for it and love the thing (fuck the haters, seriously). Before that, I was able to finish all but three of the last EX Tour races in Ridge Racer. I'm on the fence about getting DTR since it appears to be quite good.

I had a DS at day one and sold it. I don't appreciate teh innovat1ve as much as some other people do. Plus the future lineup looks pretty boring and isn't for me. You can't go wrong with either but personally its the mini Sony for me.

There is no clear answer, it really depends on the following;

Want a console experience on the go? Get a PSP

Want something new, that seperates itself from the consoles? Get a DS.

To me it's as simple as that

Vandal Hearts should be on everyone's DS list.

What the HELL happened with this game anyway? I haven't heard anything about it in God knows how long.

I'd say they're both worthy of purchase, although right now I only have a DS because it has a few games I wanted (Kirby/Meteos), and I got it with the free Mario. Plus there's a lot of good titles coming out later this year (Mario Kart/Castlevania/etc). PSP will be great in the future, but right now the only games I really want on it are Lumines and maybe Wipeout, and that's it. Just waiting for a price drop (ha!) or a few more titles I'm interested in.

Of course, if you don't have an SP, you definetely MUST get the DS first then, to have access to the whole GBA catalog.

Problem is it's a mini PS2

This really isn't true, Cockles. It may SEEM true, but most of the BEST games do not just feel as if you are playing PS2 on the go.

Wipeout tracks, for example, are short enough that 4 laps isn't going to take much time. However, the sheer challenge of the game makes them work out. It doesn't take much time to try and win a round AND it is fun as hell to retry them until you succeed as you don't need to sit there forever only to end up losing again.

Lumines is totally portable and probably wouldn't even be the same on a console. The experience of playing with headphones and the PSP up to your face is just awesome. I'm not a big puzzle game fantatic, but this is totally absorbing.

Ridge Racers needs to no description, you know what that's all about.

Hot Shots is a blast and works great as a portable title, Mercury is also quite enjoyable (when played from the memory stick, as the loading is too long from the UMD...but that wouldn't be a problem for you judging from your XBOX experience), and Twisted Metal is a good sequel (TM2 meets Black).

Some of those upcoming games look really fun as well, and not too console oriented if you look closely...

DS=thousands of games available to play. Simple decision.

I have both, and I just don't play my PSP. Nothing new, at all. The screen is great though.

I never really got into the whole handheld thing untill the newest ones came out, and the best part of the DS is that anytime your in a store, looking for a new game, you can always check out the back catalouge, and I have played SO many games for the GBA part I never touched before.

Smash brothers needs to hit the DS really soon.

There are more games available for PSP. ;) Once again, considering Cockles love of the XBOX's...special functions, I don't think he'll have any problems.

Buy a Neo Geo Pocket Color
You wanna talk about something that has aged poorly? Look no further than the NGPC...

Even though the DS has more games coming out in the short-term, the PSP seems like a better long-term solution (especially if you get a 1.5 PSP for the obvious reasons). By next year PSP games will be coming out in full force, and the difference in games will be even more noticeable as PSP games will start looking much better.

If you really want a different experience though, or for some reason really do hate the idea of replicating the home experience in a portable, by all means get a DS.

I've been in Japan for a month, and besides watching a couple of episodes of Family Guy on my PSP, all I've done is play Nintendogs, Harvest Moon, Meteos, and Kirby on my DS.

I'm naturally inclined to quick, fun gameplay. I liked Metal Gear Ac!d a lot, but it's too slow paced for me to ever get a light bulb over my head to just up and play it spontaneously.

Don't be a 'tard, get a PSP. Even I'd buy one if the price was lower, and I'm nowhere near a handheld gaming fan. A few years from now, you'll regret buying that other piece of crap. :lol Hell, buy a GBA instead of a DS. PEACE.

You don't like handheld gaming which is why you prefer the PSP to the DS, what with all the console experiences showing up there.

And the DS has a GBA slot included. Why, other than price, would you choose the GBA over the DS?

Like I said, COCKLES... Look at the lists and see which system has more games coming out that interest you.

Compatibility with older titles.
Aye. I have more GBC games that I need to finish than I have GBA games, so compatability with GBC is a must for me.

cockles, My honest suggestion is to get both, though I feel that a 1.50 PSP is a must so your milage on the PSP front may vary :b
