We are now 4 years into Gen9, how many truly Gen9 games do you consider there to be?

Alan Wake 2
Gran Turismo 7*
A Plague Tale Requiem
Cyberpunk 2077
Hellblade 2
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

And that's all from my end.

*On PS4 too, but PS5 version is in another level .

Astro's Playroom: The design is heavily influenced by the dualsense features.

Spider-Man 2: Design influenced by faster loading (Faster traversal speeds, switching between Peter and Miles at whim. Also certain set pieces that involve being knocked around the city or teleporting).

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart: Faster loading used for portal mechanics. Also adaptive triggers used for extra inputs (shout out to Returnal here as well).

Not sure how well certain boss fights in FFXVI would work on last gen.

Those are the main ones that I've played. But there are others. (Especially if you include VR).

Cyberpunk 2077 with path-tracing
Alan Wake 2
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Hellblade 2
Demon's Souls remake
Microsoft Flight Simulator
Final Fantasy XVI
The Last of Us Part I remake
Silent Hill 2
I'd argue The Witcher 3 next-gen update lived up to it's name
Great list, just got to add Elden Ring to it.

Looking at my play history, I've owned 28 "PS5" retail games. Of those, four are truly PS5 games. The rest are essentially PS4 games running at higher resolution and framerate.

it's Gen9...

edit: also Gen9 is 7 years old!

Its hardware is gen 4. Nintendo hides their brilliant games behind toy, outdated. Gimmicky hardware.

Surprised no one has mentioned AI in games yet. We are at the beginning of the age of AI and yet games still many games have poor AI. I would think this would be the differentiating factor in the next gen conversation.

1, basically just astro bot's playroom. The full game felt less current gen than the tech demo did due to the less extensive use of controller features. Maybe HFW if we're just talking about graphical fidelity. Also Returnal and Demons Souls Remake were pretty impressive graphically, but I feel like they're more of a half-step into current gen since there wasn't enough usage of current gen features.

We reached diminishing return regarding game possibilities at the end of Gen 7, then Gen 8 was just an incremental improvement and then this gen not even that... If you mean in graphics, well, once PBR was mastered, we reached diminishing return until ray tracing costs around the same than rasterized lighting when we can see a big jump (but after that I don't see any more important visual leap).

So Gen 9 games can be the same than Gen 8 games, I wouldn't expect any better than that mostly due games costs exponential increases.

Not many but hey, who gives a shit as long as good and fun games keep coming out.

Jim Ryan once said around launch that you won't see a huge graphical leap until the 2nd wave of games, which we are oddly still waiting for.

Naturally everyone made fun of him at the time, as with anything he says and is typically always right on.

Depends on your definition of next gen. If you mean graphically, lots of games. If you mean features and gameplay elements, maybe just Flight Sim? But maybe even that was on Xbox One, I don't remember.

The PS5 Pro has leveled the playing field with PC, even with the still limited CPU. It is the first time this generation that I have been blown away by visuals on console.

This is why I'm really hopeful that Microsoft will release their next gen console as early as 2026, so we can have more regular console updates, particularly with what we are reading in regards to future semiconductor tech as soon as 2027.

2026 Xbox
2028 PS6
2030 Xbox Pro
2032 PS6 Pro

Diminishing returns is real. There are plenty of current gen games. The leaps are smaller every generation though.

Sorry, but the days of going from Super Mario Bros to Mario World to Mario 64 are over.

MAYBE 1 tops im not sure i buy the whole Ratchet not possible on PS4 but other than that exception everything was/is/could be done on last gen hardware

Cyberpunk with all bells and whistles.
Hellblade 2
Flight Sim (and probably flight sim 2024)
Got lots of hopes in new Assetto Corsa Evo

Funny how half of the games mentioned in this thread can be played on PS4 just fine (except for Cyberpunk), or they are remakes of PS2-PS3 games with a graphics upgrade but little to no gameplay enhancement.

This is the stale state of AAA games in 2024.
