We are now 4 years into Gen9, how many truly Gen9 games do you consider there to be?

Demon's Souls ("bu...but it's a PS3 game", idgaf game looks and plays better than the original)
Ratchet RA
Cyberpunk 2077 PL
Astro (might not be graphically top tier, but features and style > photorealistic graphics)
BG3
DSpace remake
Eh... sure it's not a gigantic list, but considering COVID and devs abilities going downhill all of these years, I take it

It's astonishing people not mentioning flight sim here more often
The real gen 10 game that really can't be done on gen 9.
Maybe most of the people here didn't played it

I will only put Xbox games down, as I can't fairly comment on PS not owning one.

Hellblade 2 - graphics only because the game was pretty average.

That aside, nothing else looks or plays any better than last generation. Thats not a bad thing as such, because games look fantastic these days anyway.

Isnt it Gen 9? Or are you making a joke about Gen 10 starting with the PS5 Pro?
Anyway, i think any game that properly utilizes RTGI or a good mix of RT Shadows/AO has a next gen feel to it. I think Insomniac has done an amazing job demonstrating the features that "sold" this gen, near instant loading, great Dualsense implementation and amazing console RT. That is pretty next gen to me. Its 3rd party devs in general that are taking a bit long to catch up.

it's Gen9...

edit: also Gen9 is 7 years old!

So far, I've seen nothing that wouldn't have worked (with worse graphics) on the last Gen.
Quicker load times are nice, but everything else is nothing that wouldn't have worked on last Gen. Even r&c

Final fantasy XVI is my fav looking game this gen. Stuff like hogwarts legacy or tlou part 1 are stunning too.
IMO, even ps4 games like uc4 or tlou2, run, load and look much better on this gen.

Graphics:
Hellblade 2
Flight Sim
Cyberpunk

Truly Gen 10:
-
Alan Wake 2 as well. On PC's even more-so once you factor in path tracing modes on Cyberpunk and AW2. Which are well beyond the capabilities of 9th gen consoles.

I'd say the only real one that'll push this generation as a whole package will be GTA VI. Which will blow everything else away. That and Naughtydog's next title.

I played only Halo Infinite and Far Cry 6 from this gen. Plus several remasters (Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Fallout 4 etc).

I see only a handful of modern games, which attract me on Xbox Series X, and a half of them have technical issues (frame rate, FSR), so I will play them on the next Xbox at boost mode.

Luigi's mansion 3 looks amazing.
Especially the cut scenes running on the game engine.

ToTK for the in game madness you could create should you wish.
Like Animal Crossing it got some of the best shader work in the business. Up the resolution and framerate with an emulator and it looks like a million bucks.
It's ready for a next-gen upgrade on Switch2/pro (whatever they call it).

Remember when next gen games could not be done on last gen consoles? Ahh the old days. Now it's just graphical perks here and there. 👎

So far only Demons Souls really blew me away in every aspect. AW2 looks incredible if youre not stuck with shitty FSR, but the game itself was 50% filing paperwork and 30% NPC silhouettes monologuing. Cyberpunk with path tracing is a visual feast, but the world feels hollow at times. Hellblade2 is visually impressive, but didn't have much 'game' in it.

Zero.

There is nothing on the market gameplay wise that has evolved the medium.

Zelda fits the bill but thats last gen.

I consider everything that's not also available on the previous system to be a next-gen game just on the basis that you need the next-gen system to play that software.

This is the truth and always has been. It might blur together by the time we are seeing triple-crossgen games.

Hellblade 2 and Flight Simulator are for sure just for this gen

People say Demon's Souls Remake, but for sure could run on past gen, only just worst. Just play fucking Dark Souls 3 and you will see. Ratchet and Clank is another bullshit, and I just want to show this video to proove:

Maybe SH2 Remake. Just maybe. I can see running well on past consoles without that much of a lost. Chances are the Switch 2 will be a PS4 portable, and chances are that a port will arrive for it, so then we will have proof of that

One could also say Cyberpunk, but I think the optimization to past gen consoles were shitty because of the timing and not the hardware per se. The new hardware just released and there's still too much to do on them - everyone knows that the game was finished more than a year later the original release. Investors didn't care how great it looked, just how good could be the sales. They made an effort on the new consoles and didn't bother on the past

Hellblade 2 runs at 30fps on Steam Deck.
and the Steam Deck, which typically perfoms worse than an Xbox One in GPU heavy games.

Hellblade 2 is afaik entirely GPU bound. I could be wrong tho.

Too many to name. People can't seem to understand that many games have a graphical boost from ps4/xbone era to current. The only way is to play the ps4/xbone versions and see the upgraded versions.

Example; recently watched a trailer of ashen on series but was thinking how did this game look so good vs how it looked on xbone. Same thing for 360 era games until I found out I had hdr on and another boost; removing them I went from this game looks great from a small studio to O, no wonder it did not sell millions.

Pretty much all of the PS5 exclusives and several of the remasters. Many gamers can be reductive in their opinions when it comes to the PS4 Pro and PS5 versions of these games, but when looking at them side by side and considering the PS5 versions have nearly zero load times it's hard to deny the obvious leap in quality. That's before we even consider the DualSense and 3D audio.

RE4 remake especially the pro version. Now you can do ray tracing mode, the hair physics, and 60fps at 4K. Game is a beast!

Aside from that on console I still think horizon FW is the best looking game.

And yes I mean game. If you want walking simulators then you can include all those shitty horror "games" like the quarry or hell blade 2 but those are not video games.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Integrade and Rebirth
Final Fantasy 16
Resident Evil 4 Remake
Demon Souls
God of War Ragnarok

But I think the visual gap from this gen to last gen is not as wide like before. It's not a bad thing per se because PS4/Xbox One visuals looks really good

Visually most games appear to look the same as PS4/XBO titles.

Rift Apart impressed me the most. Space Marine 2 also looks great when you have hundreds of Tyranids swarming on you.

The last of us 2 is a last gen game yet looks better than most games released this gen.

The only game i bought this gen that really felt like it belongs to a current gen system is Demons Souls Remake and i bought a lot of games.

Who cares. I'm constantly blown away by many games, cross-gen and next-gen only alike.

Especially now on the Pro these games look even more stunning. Graphics look tremendous these days. We are spoiled

Loads, but like I said years ago to get the best out of this gen you need a really good TV.
Flight Sim is still for me the best looking console game around

Demon's Souls is pretty much the only current-gen only game that still makes me think "holy shit this looks crazy" whenever I play.

Alan Wake 2, i couldn't get this to run at 60fps on a 5800x 3080ti PC. The most demanding game on PC right now.

Hellblade II

MS Flight Sim

Games are the same. The only real gain are the loading times that were greatly reduced, which in a sense is simply taking us back to times where loading times didn't exist. Not even a novelty !

We were lucky to experience huge gaps between generations and taking slaps in the face when discovering the first 16 bits games, 3D games, Soul Calibur on Dreamcast or Lost Planet on Xbox 360. But all of this is dead now and it is not even among the expectations of people to get an increase in the visual department. Everything is just the continuity of the same things we have been doing since the PS360 years, with minor improvements.

This is the common sense take.

People don't like it because it robs them of the chance to sneer at the state of gaming, but it's a fact in most cases.

I mean, cool, you can achieve a similar effect by holding more stuff in ram, except that isn't how Ratchet did it, the portal effect is the loading screen, it loads in highly detailed levels/section of levels VERY fast (completely different assets other than Ratchet himself), Spider Man 2 has sections that do this also. So it isn't bullshit, there are just various methods to achieve a similar outcome (let's face it, how many other games pull this off as well?)
