We found a cat.

Update 2:
The shelter called back pretty quickly and confirmed that she didn't come through the shelter but was instead chipped at one of their events. That means there's no record of her owners, so it's looking more and more like we'll probably keep her. We'll see what the vet says, but we could slowly start introducing her to our existing cat as soon as tonight.

Cat status: Stinky but content.
The combination of steak, dry food and wet food has lead to expected but still surprisingly foul deposits, but that'll subside as her diet stabilizes. She's meowy when she hears us or our cat outside the door, but otherwise quiet and content. Poor thing is probably just happy to have a warm place to sleep (we just had a snow storm here a couple weeks ago) and food to eat. You can see some of the dry kibble on the floor in the pictures, she was so quick to faceplant into the bowl that she made a mess of it. When I went in a little later, she had eaten every last crumb up off the floor.

That's cool Retro. If there turns out to be no record of owners or any missing fliers around / queries at the vets then I hope you get to keep her. Makes you wonder where she came from, as she must have had owners.

As mentioned by my wife, we already have a cat named Luna. However, I will provide photos, as that's the real reason people check out cat threads.

That sounds like a good way to ensure she ends up in a quart-sized paperboard container and served over rice.

Yeah, we've looked at Craigslist and all the local shelters' sites and their facebook pages, along with a few of the usual local lost pet things. The important thing is that she has a home until such a time as we find her owners.

Here's a series I like to call "Where is my beer / did you take my beer?"

Name it after the restaurant.

"Longhorn" doesn't really seem appropriate. We were thinking something themed similar to it (I like "Rio" but my wife's not crazy about it), but we've been trying to avoid getting attached to her in case we do find her owners. With that looking less and less likely, we'll probably start talking about names. And yes, GAF can probably help.

Yeah, I know, I forgot. I had thought I'd snag the next post after yours but someone snuck in there.

There are way too many "oops" kittens in shelters for me to not spay/neuter.

I wonder how much it would cost to maintain a cat on a yearly basis. If I had to choose one, I would most likely pick a white cat with brown blemishes.

Call her Luna and get her one of those things to wear around her neck with a litte crescent moon pendant on it OP. Think of how cute that woud be. Think of it.

I named my cat Luna! She doesn't quite look like her, but she's super sweet. I watched a lot of Sailor Moon as a kid, haha

That's Luna on the left:

Update:

She's healthy overall, about 1-3 years old. Vet couldn't tell if she was spayed (she couldn't feel a scar or see a tattoo) so we may have to do that soon.

We named her Noelle. :)

Cats keep adopting my parents. They have too many now. But at the same time they don't want to give any up. Good thing I'm taking one back with me and they have a good size house. I'll get pictures of them all when I get there, they're all adorable.

Yay for the both of you, thats awesome.

Moar pics of stinky but content plzz.

I'll grab some more later tonight, she had a blood test and a few vaccines tonight so she's not in a good mood. The good news is, no Feline AIDS / leukemia, no vermin in her ears, no wounds. Apart from being underfed she's in good shape and everyone at the vet thought she was a sweetheart.

It can get a little expensive with vet visits, vaccinations, food and litter, not to mention stuff like toys, scratching posts, treats, etc. Cats are generally solitary and indoor critters, so they make great pets if you're out at work a lot and live in an apartment. They have a reputation as being standoffish, but every cat I've ever encountered has been affectionate and enjoyed being around people.

If you can't find a cat that matches your ideal, adopt a black cat. They languish in shelters the longest for no reason other than stupid superstition. Adopt in general. And DO NOT declaw.
Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is for us not be sidetracked by that 100% factual statement that someone, somewhere inevitably has to disagree with just be the an asshole. Thanks, Retro.

I'll get pictures of them all when I get there, they're all adorable.

What do you mean? They are all very clearly visible in your hair and beard.

great name! And I`m so happy to hear you are keeping her, sounds like this gorgeous cat found a loving home. :)

OP, do you let your cats outside? If so, don't be surprised if Noelle will take off one day. She seems casual enough around people.

Does it talk?

Edit -If it doesn't then fuck that cat...... I want a talking black cat dammit.

Sometimes, yes. She has a rather loud "pay attention to me" meow.

Noelle and Luna had a brief (10-15 minute) encounter last night. We decided to let them see each other since there had been a total lack of growling at the door separating them, and there was no freaking out when they caught glimpses of other before. Went fairly well that I could tell. Luna was very curious but not aggressive. I had expected her to get really pissed because another cat was in HER house with HER family and was coming dangerously close to HER cat condo and HER shit this is bullshit goddammit you're not supposed to BE HERE AT ALL you interloping fuck. She just kinda cautiously approached to sniff a bit.

Noelle growled and hissed just enough to make Luna back off. When she did, the growling completely stopped and they just kinda chilled out on opposite sides of the room. Noelle laid down and actually looked like she was starting to fall asleep.

We separated them for the night at that point so it ended on a "positive" note.

We'll continue to take it slowly on introducing them. We don't know anything about Noelle's former life and I'm pretty certain the biggest point of contention between them will be food, because Noelle is probably conditioned to see other cats as competition for scarce resources and she doesn't understand yet that she doesn't have to worry about when her next meal will be anymore.

You better or there will be angry letters direct at your person.

Done!

We've been letting her out of the spare bathroom and into the office with the door closed, so she can get used to our other cat's smell and so we can interact with her in a larger environment (since there's not a lot of room for two of us in there). She explored a little bit, used the litter box and then flopped down in the middle of the room at which point I took the pictures, so the trend of stinky but content continues.

Judging by my cats, the biggest point of contention may be the owner's attention.

This is something I've been consciously aware of, especially with our previous cat situation. My wife adopted both of them at the same time about a year or so before we started dating and Prissy (a pudgy, crabby calico) immediately asserted her dominance. When I arrived, Luna (our tabby) had been bullied to the point that she rarely left the bedroom and closet. I immediately upset the established order by my presence (and to be fair, because I felt sorry for the poor little thing) and Luna basically adopted me and came out of her shell. Neither of us played favorites, but Prissy took a long time to warm up to me (we think a previous male owner had abused her, she was also very weary around my father-in-law but was very friendly with women) so when all was said and done each cat basically stuck pretty close to one of us and there wasn't any competition.

With Noelle, I'm letting my wife feed her, spend more time with her and while I'm not withholding affection or anything like that, I tend to play with her in shorter bursts whereas my wife will keep fawning over her. It will be tough to maintain balance since my wife is at work all day while I'm at home, but we know it's something we have to jump on early and during this crucial phase where they're being introduced.

Noelle immediately went to my wife when she was upset at the vet and earlier she jumped up onto my wife's shoulder. She's also lying curled up right next to her, sleeping. She also seems to purr noticeably louder for her.

OK, did this as a rush job but it should work. Sing along to the tune of The First Noel

Looks like my cousin's black cat. "El Diablo" I call it at times cause that playboi gets too playful at times and the fangs and mini-toiger claws come out. Then it's war! He's IDGAFOS 24/7 though lol.

So, the vet called this morning with the results from her stool sample; no parasites or abnormalities to report. That was the last health-related issue, apart from her being unspayed (which we'll... ahem... fix shortly). The only mystery left is who her previous owners were (see below).

We discovered this morning that when she purrs loudly, she drools. A lot. She was sitting on my chest while I was reclining this morning and my shirt ended up looking like somebody got me with a squirt gun.

We introduced her to our other cat twice last night; just 15 minutes at a time, with both of us and no food or distractions in the room. Our cat was cautious but curious, and didn't seem territorial at all (she's lived with other cats so this wasn't a surprise), but Noelle growled a bit and even hissed a few times. That's expected, considering the last 48 hours or so have been completely crazy and she's likely still deep in survival mode and sees other cats as competition.

Their second meeting was much smoother; neither cat made a peep or made any aggressive overtures, and Noelle actually just flopped over in the middle of the floor and went to sleep. The number of fucks this cat gives seems non-existent. Only when we were separating them again did anything happen; as we were heading toward the door, they both started towards it and reacted; our older cat hissed (the first time I've seen her do it) but they both just stood their ground until the door was open. Little huffs like that are going to be normal until they're used to each other, and other than that they just seem to not care about the other too much. They'll still be kept apart for a few weeks at least, and they probably won't eat together for a long time, if ever (we leave dry food out, but give them wet food nightly).

This will probably be the last update for this thread since it's kind of moving off the top page, isn't really important and there's not much new to report. Thanks for all the comments, cat pictures, etc. I'm sure if you're inclined towards pet pictures (and this is the internet, so what the hell are you even doing here if you're not?), you'll probably see her in the various critter threads that pop up from time to time. Happy Holidays.

It's looking more and more like this is going to happen. Where we live, if no one claims her within 10 days of finding her, she's legally ours if we want her. This is day 4 and so far only a nice older couple has come to see if she's their missing cat. I felt so bad getting their hopes up this close to the holiday, even though it's not really anything we did besides try to find her owners.

With the holiday coming up, the shelters being full and her being a black cat, we probably won't hear anything. She's got a home though, and that's important.
