For the lazy - Meteos is very good, and easily worth the purchase if you enjoy puzzle games. One of the better entries in the genre from recent years.

For the interested -

I'm not prepared to make a Lumines vs. Meteos judgement yet, but I can safely say that Meteos is much more full-featured. There's many more options for play. "Star Trip" is like a 1P adventure where you clear several "planets" to get to the end, and there are multiple types of star trips as well.

Then there's a timed option, where you do as well as you can for 2 minutes or 5 minutes, or clear 100 meteos or 1000 meteos as fast as you can.

There's also an endless mode for each planet, and as the planets vary wildly in terms of gravity (the basis of how the game plays), its not merely getting a different score for each skin or something. You'll have really different high scores, for some of the planets.

Lastly, I really dig how the game unlocks things for you. As you clear Meteos' off the top of the screen, they're added to your total. There are a ton of different types, some more rare than others. So like, after an hour of playing, you might have 250 iron in your stock, 200 H20, 30 glow, and maybe only 1 "soul" meteos. These are then used to "make" new planets, items, rare metals, or sounds/songs. So a planet that's made with just common shit could be made after almost no playing, but some will be hard to save up and make. In 90 minutes of playing I got ONE soul meteos, and it alone made a planet. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some that required a lot of rare stuff to make, later on.

The game is option rich, as well. You can set the game for a rightie or a leftie, you can set what items/weapons you want to appear. Soundtest and stats are available from the start. Stats isn't as comprehensive as a game like melee, but its still cool. Counts power-ons, on time, game time, # of games, # of total blocks cleared, launched, etc.

-You can send a meteos demo to another DS owner.

-4 players can play with one game card.

Lastly, in my opinion the music is really, really excellent. There are NO licensed tracks, so you can't expect anything as cool as I hear music in my soul or lights or anything like that, but the best Meteos tracks easily match up to the best Lumines original tracks. The title screen music is especially (surprisingly) epic.

Downsides -

The meteos are small, and I've died thanks to grabbing the wrong one or putting one in the wrong spot multiple times, after only playing a couple hours. In 1P its frustrating, but in multiplayer its gonna be a major bitch, I can already tell.

The scratching trick still works - sometimes. When the shit has hit the fan and I've tried it, its worked a little over half the time.

Tetsuya is god. I bought a PSP almost single handedly for Lumines, and I'll be getting a DS almost single handedly for Meteos. The man can do no wrong!

I just picked up from Best Buy (first time I've ever had anyone willing to actually open a box in the back for me, lazy bastards).

My initial impressions are that it's really challenging to play the game quickly and intelligently enough to do better than simply randomly scratching the screen. I'm aware this trick is well documented and definitely less helpful at higher levels, but the game's pretty fast-paced and intense (unlike Lumines), which means that panicked scratching is too easy to fall back on when you're in trouble.

Everything else looks really great, very fully featured, and otherwise a must-own puzzle game.

Now if only I could get over the initial hump and become a better player than scratching allows. I feel like Tetris just came out for the first time and the concept is so foreign that people are having luck just dropping blocks randomly and as quickly as possible because they get quicker results than by just... thinking.

Thanks to all the Meteos threads kicking around here, I busted out the Japanese version of Meteos again...For $30, I just might go out and buy the English version too. Hell I just graduated, I got tons of extra cash floating around.

Look out for me in this thread in a week or so. It sucks living outside of the territory this game is released in first.

I have imported this game and so I have been enjoying this for a long time now, and I must say this puzzle idea is really gaining my top spot for a puzzle game (Tetris). I mean this game can really be compared head to head with Tetris, in every aspect, and will not lose in any of them as well.

Yes, padawans, start learning! My 1000-block Meteo Attack time awaits you!

Well. Mizuguchi didn't have much to do with this game. It's Sakurai's baby.

Goddamn this would be the best game to take with me on vacation but it doesnt come out for ages here in Europe! :( Anyone know a good import site that could deliver it within 2 weeks?

www.videogamesplus.ca

Reliable, great customer service, decent prices and above all very fast. I usually get my games within 3 business days (and I live in Sweden).

Picked it up. I've played the E3 demo extensively, but I can't wait to try the full game!

... too bad it'll be twelve hours or so.

you can tell Sakurai was involved from the instant you turn it on. The menu system looks like it was ripped right from Smash Brothers DX, and when you unlock things a box appears on the screen with an exclamation point and a message a la "You've played the game for 1 hour!"

Also, the game is feature rich, just like Smash brohters. It has an item screen exactly like DX which lets you turn individual items on and off as well as set the overall item frequency. Play the main games in adventure or single game play, using stock or time mode (familiar?). In multiplayer you can set up tons of variables, including team play :)

A lot of the other features have been mentioned before, but really it seems like nothing was left out. A lot like Smash Brohters, different players could play the game different ways to their hearts content. They even have an option to play using the D-Pad for those who are bound to complain about nintendo forcing that awful, awful stylus play on gamers. But from what I've experienced so far, playing without the stylus would be suicide ;) It's a lot like if Retro had added dual analouge to Prime afterall, just to show the complainers why the game wasn't designed that way in the first place.

Tons of unlockables a la Smash brothers, too. The games are obviously very different, but you can really see Sakurai's philosophies in both of them.

does anyone know exactly why Sakurai left Nintendo? Is their bad blood between them? I presume not since Meteos is Nintendo published here, so I guess he just wanted a change in pace? Also, was he involved with Canvas Curse at all before he left? Is he credited at the end? If he wasn't, then I guess his leaving was best for both parties, as nintendo got an extra great game and Hal is still doing wonderfully without him :)

I love puzzle games and I tried Meteos but I didn't like it that much. It *was* fun but I think maybe i didn't "get it". Is there a way of swapping blocks left and right? It seemed like I was only doing it up and down so I found myself waiting for blocks of my color to appear.

To paraphrase: "They wanted me to do the new GameCube Kirby. I'm fucking sick of Kirby."

Or maybe it was Smash Bros. Anyway, that was his general demeanor :lol

Blocks in Meteos only move up and down, ala Columns.

This game is tremendous. After playing this a bit today I fear I may not get back to Kirby for awhile now. Lumines took over my life the week it was released, and now this looks poised to do the same. Oh, and the music is awesome.

...aaaand back.

Great game. I got to play the demo when I was at E3, but it really didn't show the depth of the game. From the changing planets affecting gameplay to the great great music the game provides. I'm finding the "Fusion" thing really cool...it looks like Q? took a page out of HAL's book.

First Kirby and now Meteos. It's been a great 3 weeks for the DS.

Has anyone picked up Meteos at an EB?

I, like a fool, placed a pre-order at my local EB for this and they still don't have it as of a few minutes ago. I haven't pre-ordered anything from them in almost a year, because they're always fucking something up, and this will assuredly be the last time I do so.

I also preordered it at an EBgames only to find out this morning that it was "delayed" until tomorrow. I stopped by the walmart down the street and bought it there instead. My understanding is that if enough people don't preorder a game, EB will not have the game shipped overnight to the store. I preorder fairly regularly from the local EB and the only games that seem to get "delayed" by a day or two are the niche market games that I'm afraid no other store in my area will carry at all.

I haven't watched it but trust me...it gets VERY fast. Play challenge mode (the mode where you have to get 100 or 1000) on the hardest level and you'll cry at the speed of it :lol

Got the game! Excellent so far, fusion is cool, multiplayer is fun and all in all the fast pace is great. With this and bomberman, me and my bro are having some killer multiplayer sessions. I highly recommend this game.

I picked it up this afternoon. I'll just say that I played from 3:30pm till around 7pm and did not even realize the time go. That's the mark of a great game.

It's very good. Anyone with a DS who even *remotely* likes puzzle games really should get this.

Lumines and this are the Tetris of this whole generation of consoles/handhelds.

Picked this up a few hours ago and have been playing it ever since. I'm starting to get a hang of it and the mid-air docks and other strategies are starting to make some sense. There is a lot of depth in here. This is an absolutely excellent game. I haven't tried the scribbling technique yet, and I doubt I will. It doesn't seem like something I would end up using anyway. Well, off to play more Meteos.

The best part about Meteos for me is...I can enjoy it in short bursts, due to the nature of it's gameplay. I can play it while Battlefield 2 loads, or while I'm downloading something, and stuff like that. I love it :)

Time War:
100 Meteos: 30.93 seconds.
Not bad but I had one at 96 meteos at 24 seconds and I was about to hit the last four when a column I was ignoring reached the top. Damn, I love this game.

I'm frantically trying to 100 percent kirby in the time it takes meteos to arrive. kirby is just so entertaining, if meteos even comes close, I gotta say this will be one of my more memorable gaming months in ages.

I hit 99% on Kirby. I just couldn't beat the Rock B time trial, and now that Meteos is here, I have given up on that. I will get back to it later. Anyway, I must say that Meteos is on par with Kirby as far as entertainment value goes. It's addicting and it's great to pick up and just play for a few minutes but carries quite a bit of depth under its addictive nature.

I'm finding it more addicting then Kirby if that says anything. I was not as excited about collecting medals in Kirby as some people were though.

The 1000 Meteos is insane. I got up to like 750 and they were moving so fast I had no time to think whatsoever.

Also, that video of the person playing is amazing. I have alot of practicing to do. :lol

Sakurai was one of the main designers on the game, but he wasn't the director. Nor is there proof that he created the concept. People just sort gave him all the credit because he is involved.

This is a really good game. To me, this and Kirby feel like the first "full" games to come out on the system. They are hot. I don't want to get into any of that Lumines vs. this nonsense because they feel very different and I've only had it a day. It's much easier to get decent initially, so I feel like that accessability is working for me.

I love the little extras, sound, and general presentation.

Scratching the screen works for me about 65-70% of the time, but it's so obvious and easy to do I assume it's there on purpose to get you out of the sometimes madness of grabbing the small blocks accurately at all times. People who have downplayed that ability are blowing smoke. Doesn't make me like it any less.

Glad I got this.

If he didn't, he's been pretty misleading in interviews.

IGN Interview said:
IGN: What was the inspiration for the creation of Meteos?

Masahiro Sakurai: I used to work at HAL where I made Kirby and Smash Bros. After that, I became an independent designer, but I didn't have my own team. Mr. Miziguchi at Q Entertainment asked me to make a falling puzzle game. I realized that this genre really hasn't evolved since Tetris Attack and other games, and began to think of something fun I could do with this. At that point, I came up with the idea of having them fall and then shooting them back up.

Nate405 said:

No he isn't. Mizuguchi was the one with the main idea inspired by the 24 concept which translated into the 4 other world and the falling block concept, but the rest was Sakurai's idea. Even Mizuguchi said as much.

IGN: What were your responsibilities on Meteos?

Masahiro Sakurai: I was game designer. I was in charge of planning the game and making adjustments to the game.

Takeshi Hirai: I was the director of the game. I was in charge of internal management and scheduling and also do some programming and technical things.

Neither of you are wrong...

I enjoyed Kirby at first, but now I find myself losing interest in it. Some of the later ink trials and time attacks are just annoying as hell to score medals. I haven't touched the game since I unlocked the Metaknight ball.

I've been playing with little idea of what I'm doing, but I'm having fun. There seems to be a ton of options, but I think what I've played so far is the basic game.
