'I thought I was dead': Kayaker gets swallowed by humpback whale in dramatic moment caught on camera

A kayaker is lucky to be alive after being swallowed by a humpback whale off the coast of Chilean Patagonia and getting spit out by the leviathan.

A humpback whale swallowed a man on a kayak off the coast of Chile last week, before he was quickly able to get out of the leviathan’s mouth unharmed.

Video shows the death-defying and terrifying moment from last Saturday, when Adrián Simancas was kayaking with his father, Dell, in Bahía El Águila near the San Isidro Lighthouse in the Strait of Magellan, off Chilean Patagonia.

As Simancas was paddling in what appeared to be an inflatable kayak, a humpback whale rolled on the surface with its mouth open, swallowing the kayaker.

Moments later, the tail broke the surface and the whale dove to deeper depth. Simancas and his yellow kayak then resurfaced after being freed from the clutches of the whale’s jaws.

The Associated Press reported that Dell captured the moment on video and encouraged his son to stay calm.

"Stay calm, stay calm," the father was heard saying in Spanish after his son was released from the whale.

"I thought I was dead," Adrián told the AP. "I thought it had eaten me, that it had swallowed me."

This sort of thing has happened to others as well. Clearly it's been going on for millennia if humans put themselves on small craft out into the ocean. It's always interesting to see a modern example of what a historical text is referencing.

It would have been a freaky experience, but the man was in no danger. Certainly no danger of being swallowed anyway. That would be impossible.

Saying that, I would have still freaked out if it had been me.

No idea, but if I had to guess, everything unfolded so fast that the scene must have felt surreal. If it were me (and I can only speak for myself), I’d probably be silent at first, stunned and overwhelmed by the moment, feeling completely helpless. But once he resurfaced, adrenaline would have kicked in, and rather than losing control of the situation, I’d focus on keeping things calm. That’s just me being honest about how I think I’d react. Maybe he wasn’t affected at all, but I highly doubt that.

Yeah, they feed on plankton and krill so no need to swallow big things. Even blue whales, the biggest animals alive, can't swallow anything bigger than an orange apparently...
