Is there any other series with as much of an identity crisis as the Darksiders series?

Darksiders 1: God Of War mixed with Zelda: OOT with Diablo-ish lore.

Darksiders 2: A looter hack n' slash semi-sequel?

Darksiders 3: A character action soulslike

Darksiders Genesis: A top-down

The first game was fantastic in it's day. Loved it. Played it repeatedly.

The second game was a real record scratch disappointment for me. Never bothered with 3 after 2 was so bad.

Genesis was decent, but it just makes me sad that we haven't gotten another game like the first.

I'm playing the second one right now, well the remaster. I like it but I can see people being mad about all the platforming. Might be more Prince of Persia than Zelda 64. I had to look up how to do a couple of the puzzles too.

1 and 2 are equally good. Different genres though. One is Zelda, the other a looter. 3 is a shoe string budget Soulslike-ish. It's got solid ideas and it has its moments, but unless you love the lore it's not really worth your time.

I like Darksiders 2 and the voice/character of Death. I had a cool experience of being at low health without meter before walking into a boss battle and beating it by the skin of my teeth using jumping air kicks and gauntlets I had just picked up. Love the stylish combos that can be pulled off. I bounced off the first one due to boredom and off the third due to cringe and annoyance. Never bothered with Genesis.

Beat them all, have the plat trophies for 1 & 3, I'd say 1 is still the best overall though unlike some I don't mind the experimentation of the series, enjoyed each entry overall.

so, first of all, I'd not really compare either of them to God of War. the feel of the combat is way closer to DMC. but heavily simplified compared to either GoW or DMC as it's not the main focus of the game.

Darksiders 2: A looter hack n' slash semi-sequel?

Darksiders 2 has all the same elements of the first game, just with an added random loot system... which was mostly superfluous tbh. the combat is even more DMC like here tho, with more combos and generally better combat feel.

Darksiders 3: A character action soulslike

more like an action adventure souls-like. it is less character actiony than Darksiders 2. especially at launch it had ZERO character action genes. before they patched in an alterative playstyle mode, you couldn't even animation cancel... they added a separate mode that enables animation cancelling post launch lol.
it still has the puzzle elements of the old games... just toned down.

Darksiders Genesis: A top-down

ok, now this one is a spinoff, and that does count as much as Mario Party counts as a Mario game I'd say.

all in all, Darksiders 1, 2 and 3 are action adventures with varying influences. 1 and 2 are very similar, same concept generally, very Zelda-esque, just with a slightly different approach to loot. 3 then added the souls-like elements and toned down the puzzles a bit.
so I don't think it's all that weird. Zelda went through way more changes over the years for example... even 3D Mario games did. after all, Mario 64 and Sunshine were designed around hub levels with different missions, while Galaxy 1&2, 3D Land, and 3D World are linear level based games with minimal exploration... and Odyssey went full on massive levels with shitloads of objectives.

I'm outlier here but I like third game the most, for me exploration is highlight of this game and in my opinion world map is designed very well. Combat is decent enough, nothing remarkable, but combat never was a strong point of this series.

I liked all 4 but the best are probably 1 and 2, with 1 being probably the most beloved by fans.

3 is the underrated one.

Purely for nostalgia, the second one. I didnt play the original until much later and imo it didn't hold up that well. Both pretty good though. Didn't play the later games

2 for me, for the many and awesome dungeons. The loot was unneeded and the action was not as satisfying as the first though.

1 is great.

3 meh.

I have not played Genesis.

Darksiders 1 : Great game (fun and awesome to platinum)
Darksiders 2 : Pretty decent (decent enough, platinum was a slog)
Darksiders 3: Buggy mess, not fun(though I do have the platinum trophy for it)

I can't really rate them, because the best thing about the franchise is that each game is in a bit different genre.

I really like the first one and probably the one I had the most consistent fun with.
I never completed the second one. I know many consider it to be the best, but I wasn't feeling it at the time.
I liked the third one well enough. It came around the time when I had a weird fascination of Souls rip offs and it was one of the better ones.
Genesis is pretty cool Diablo clone - it was a shame that it ran 30fps on consoles, though.

They are all good in different ways. 1 has unquestionably the best story and characters (Mark Hamil notably being on his A game). 2 probably has the best combat/gameplay and Genesis is, well pretty great if you like your Action RPGs/Twin Stick shooters.

Yet to play 3

I only played 1 and 2.
Out of those I prefer 1. I really liked the "Edgy Zelda" approach they went with.
2 was also fun and has better combat IMO. But the bigger maps, more generic open world design and rushed feeling second half made it an overall worse experience. I didn't like the loot focus either.

My ideal version of 4 would be the overall structure of 1 with the combat of 2.
