Darksiders 4 Announced - Continues After Darksiders 1's Ending (PS5/Series/PC)

The first one was a lot of fun and the remaster holds up pretty well. I've had 2 in the backlog for years and haven't ever gotten around to it. 3 seemed liked a hard pass for me so if this new one is more like the first two games I'm all for it.

Who would've thought, huh? I just hope it's at least as good as the second game (I never finished the first) and that it stays far, far away from anything resembling the third one. DS3 was a total and complete disappointment.

from the description it sounds like it's going back to the roots... sounds like they are actually taking the first game as a basis.

this should hype up all the classic 3D Zelda fans among you too btw.
the first game was a very traditional Action Adventure, with a similar formula to dungeons as classic 3D Zelda... it just also had a more badass and brutal combat system.

the second one was as well (it had an even better combat system), but had this bloated looter shooter esque weapon system which was pretty unnecessary imo.

Hope it's like Darksiders Genesis...the only one I've ever beaten hah

All 3 mainline games really get dull after a bit.

I liked 1 in general, but the combat was very clunky. In 2 there was a bit too much exploration/puzzles, but everything else was great. Haven't played 3, maybe it's finally time. Regardless of my issues, I've always adored the art style.

Yes!!!! Been waiting for this for a very long time. While I would like to experience Stride's side of the story during the conflict but I'll still rather they actually move on pass Darksiders 1's ending so I'm glad thats what they're doing. And we already had somehow of a half Stride story for Genesis anyway so not too much of a deal.

All 4 of them are in the teaser. We could theoretically get a game with 4 gameplay styles

  • Zelda-like for War
  • DMC-like for Death
  • Semi-Soulslike for Fury
  • ARPG for Strife

sounds more like you either chose at the beginning and all of them have a slightly different move set...
or you might be able to switch between them either all the time or at checkpoints (Vulgrim shops)

they clearly describe it as a classic action adventure, like the first game was.
"3rd person action adventure game featuring combat, traversal and puzzle solving"
so however the characters will work, it seems to just legit be a direct sequel to the first game, both in terms of the timeline and the game design

this sure brings back some memories. really enjoyed both 1 and 2. I still have to play the other two thou. will definitely try to get around to them before this releases.

Darksider 1 ending was the most hype shit ever, too bqd they cannot keep that hype and go straight to this game, rather get distracted over 3 other game

We have been lucky to get to this point. This franchise could have ended after the first and the second game, but we somehow got a third, and now as a blessing we will get our fourth as well.

I love all three, there is something about them, I don't know if it's the music, the action-adventure with puzzle elements or the gameplay, but these games scratch an itch.

Played through 1st game twice, didn't even beat 2nd game, and never played third game.

Had they just stuck close to the same formula from the 1st game in the 2nd game it would have been fine.

But hey, if it's not broken you got a take a fucking hammer to it amirite.

the second one still had all the elements of the first... just mindlessly added and bloated nonsense on top...

I think if you mostly ignore all the loot shit, and just go from main quest to main quest it's fine.

it had a far better combat system at least.

Give the third game a shot, it's akin to the first game. Nothing like the loot fest the second one was.

Ah nice never found the other horsemen or sequels all that interesting tbh and dropped the series after playing 2, for a bit. Good time to replay the remaster and jump in this.

More franchises need to do this and do a soft reboot/sequel for long running series spanning on many and legacy platforms.

they aren't doing a soft reboot.
the stories of the other games never went past the first game.

the end of Darksiders 1 is chronologically the latest point in the story.
the other games are all either set before or during the events of Darksiders 1.

Genesis is the prequel to everything,
then comes the intro of Darksiders 1 after which we go into a time skip during which 2 and 3 happen, Death frees war in Darksiders 2, and from that point on the rest of Darksiders 1 happens.

the plan was to introduce every horseman and then continue the story. which is now happening.

Ah fair enough I just don't have the patience to play all of them but that's a pretty unique way of doing a series.

I'll probably just watch the story on Youtube to catch up with the timeline, come release lol.

the other 3 games aren't all that vital anyway I'd say. Darksiders 1 sets the Scene pretty well on its own imo.

the other games are just for additional lore basically.

I will maintain the tiniest flicker of hope for this game. Darksiders was fantastic. I did not like 2 or 3 at all. Genesis was good, but it wasn't the thing I've been wanting, which is a direct sequel to the first game, and in that same style.

It's about fucking time they continue the story after Darksiders 1. I mean jesus christ, that game was 14 years ago lol

It's about fucking time they did this. How the heck are the sequels so disjointed in the story that didn't lead up to the epic ending of Part 1? Going by the series each has its own take on the genre from Zelda-like, Diablo-like, Souls-like, and we could've had a Gears of War or Doomlike for my man Strife who's been reduced to the support character. Hopefully, this game rectifies this but I wonder what kind of game system will they use this time?

Strife who's been reduced to the support character.

Strife is literally the protagonist of Darksiders Genesis lol. Great game, don't let the shift to an isometric perspective fool you. Having said that, yes, it would be cool to play as him with the more traditional set-up, I'm hopeful we'll get to play as all four in this one, would be perfect and symbolic too.

Getting excited for a mid(except the second one) and dead franchise is interesting to see on gaf, especially considering the publisher. 0 chances this ends up more than average.
First game was great for it's time. The second game was an overly long slog through some incredibly boring environments, worse than 'mid' in my opinion.

Just be like the first, with perhaps some character switching.

The first game was glorious. I have good memories of it. I remember reading about it online when it wasn't on my radar at all. It was about to come out early in the new year. Then I sort of warmed up to it. It was 31 december and I went shopping after work, suddenly I saw this on display and took it home. Back then the street dates were broken a lot, often by a week or 2. I had a week off during the new years and religiously played it. On PS3. Good times.

The puzzles, traversal, action etc all clicked. It was pretty much the only Zelda ish thing you would find on PS3.

Darksiders 2 I eventually picked up cheap and beat that as well, its a good game in my book but its way, way too bloated. It often feels like work. I played the 4k too, up until the second world. Its still really a good game with good VA, sound art direction, fun gameplay but really 30% of the busywork and dungeons could've been cut. I never played 3 and what I see of it just looks boring and another sort of Souls design.

They should've done this proper sequel right away. I think the problem with Vigil and THQ was that they believed in their selves a little too much, they punched above their weight with DS2 and all. This IP wasn't AAA.

This is a result of mismanagement. They wanted to create a huge franchise after the success of 1 (which I think was a decent success for a mid size budget, but not more). They went aiming too high, wanted to release a game for each character. This backfired after DS2 couldn't cover its costs, this game was clearly the result of a developer losing focus. They went for random loot, DLC, general bloat.

People jumped off, Vigil sank. THQ sank. DS3 existing was a miracle.

I think DS3 is better than it's reputation. It's not great but I think it is fine.

I played it way past launch though with all the patches.
