What are some mechanics you hate in games that you love?

I just died twice in a row in Nier Automata, which is worse than dying in a soulsborne because in soulsborne you only lose your level up currency. In Nier Automata, I just lost all of my equipped chip abilities AND exp and it has me not even wanting to keep going. Both times was while I was trying to escape a large desert hoard in the "this cannot continue" location.

I understand that there are people that get a rush from this sort of potential, but I have never been one of them.

The weird thing is that this has never happened to me before in this game, and I did not even know it was a thing until now.

Gacha mechanic in Xenoblade 2, I LOVE this game but absolutely hated how you get blades in this game.

Funny thing is there also blades that you get by doing side quests or main story which how should have been.

The worse part when you get Blades you want near the end of the game you longer have the time increase their affinity in order to be useful battles and unlock their quests.

I still don't have kos mos, even with that cheese method.

In first playthrough I got her near end of the game which I longer had time to properly use her or get to her quests.

I hate gacha mechanic with passion and as much as I respect Monolith Soft I still don’t understand their reason putting this awful mechanic in other wise excellent game.

Gacha mechanics. I play Tower of Fantasy, Genshin Impact, DOAXVV and a few other waifu games and I absolutely loathe Gacha mechanics in them. I hate them so much I refuse to partake in them and spend months or even years like in the case of DOAXVV manually grinding at the chance to unlock a waifu or outfit :messenger_grinning_sweat:.

Another thing I also hate in games is forced stealth missions where if you’re caught it’s game over. Hated them in the Spiderman games very much. I also hate stupid and unnecessary puzzles in action games or stupid platforming sections in FPSs.

If I loved the game more this would be the BOTW thread, for me.

As it stands... honestly there are LOTS of pay to win mechanics in games that are great games. That in general is a never-welcome mechanic. And people calling out escort quests, that really hits home too.

Huge Hunt: Showdown fan but I've started hating status effect ammo. Or particularly DumDum ammo. It induces a bleed effect every time you get tagged and it has to be stopped manually by holding a button down for about five seconds. They've added a ton of DumDum ammo due to a lack of new content at one point and it's become frustrating to play Hold Square Simulator.

Playing through Rebirth recently made me think of two things I hate.

1. Walking for 3 seconds before cutscenes. Like don't even give me control of my character and just continue the cutscene. So many games do this and I hate it.
2. The whole squeezing through tight surfaces or under things bullshit. Like we don't need to hide loading times behind these 5-10 second sequences anymore. Stop.

That being said while Rebirth did both of these I still think that game is a masterpiece and it's now easily my GOTY and easily one of my favorite games of the PS4/PS5 generations.

Other things I hate though.

  • Forced stealth especially when it's an auto failure
  • Weapon degradation (I'm looking at you Zelda)
  • QTEs when I don't have the option of hold which luckily most games have now
  • Anything rogue like

The BT encounters in Death Stranding

Fortunately, the BT locations are fixed, but I found the battles to be especially frustrating. While it’s possible to simply run away once the encounter begins, the overall design feels poorly thought out and lacks any meaningful rewards.

It's like there is this slowness to how things happen in Rebirth. There are so many unnecessary animations and breaks that it just doesn't value my time and it starts to eat away at one's sanity after 100 hours. It was WORSE in remake as everything was just giant filler sections.

This is common in Square Enix games and one of the main reasons that I look down on their games almost all of them have this same bullshit right here. It's like one of their goals with a game is to slow you down.

Every other dev realizes that pisses us off but not Square.

Another example is when your chocobo runs into something, iirc there is a slight but noticeable pause before you can start moving again. This pause eats a piece of my soul everytime it happens.

Great game though, I agree, but I know your pain. Never, EVER, EVER stop my controller from working for an arbitrary time after some trigger in your game. Just let me control it, stop holding me back and just let me be free Square Enix!

I don't like how Sekiro works but I like the game.

Not really a mechanic, but i hate over the shoulder camera. It really sucks because most games are over the shoulder camera view.... i fucking hate it.
I like over the shoulder if the FOV is wide enough and when it's not like the terrible ass God of War camera. Shit shouldn't be that fucking close.

40K Space Marine 2 is the same way as well. It put me off buying it so I'm glad they put up the trial for PS+

Forced walking.

But my ballbreaker usually is non skippable conversations, meaning phrases, in any game.

I LOVE lore. I like soaking myself in it, and checking every peep I can check. But it irked me to no end while playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Hundreds of people to talk to AND NOT A SINGLE PHRASE SKIPPED ARRRRRGHHHGHGH

I prefer dodge to parry. I feel like dodge allows for infinite things but parry only allows for one thing over and over.
To me parry is soooooooooo satisfying and feels good to pull off… I get hugely addicted to it.

I hate unparriable attacks in all games, i suck at dodging and i think rolling around on the floor like an armour wearing idiot (with a weapon in hand no less) would look stupid outside of a fight, it looks twice as stupid during one. (dashing/quickstep is cool though)
I hate the campaign management and war minigame in Pathfinder: Wrath Of The Righteous.
Isnt there an option to skip it though? i mean even without counting mods.

I am not going to call anyone losers, but I do prefer dodging to parrying. It's much more fun to not even be in the same zip code when the enemy foolishly tries to attack me.

Yes and I do which is an indictment on it. The ship combat and colony management in their follow up game Warhammer Rogue Trader I love.

Squeezing a character through tight spaces. Whether it is pushing through a crevice or crawling through a vent it will be tedious and unrewarding. Callisto Protocol is notorious for this.

Settlement building in Fallout 4. It's not fun to control (not that fun in general), and takes away from exploration.

Isn't that optional? I can see how it would not be if it were forced. For me, I liked turning that drive in into The Alamo. Or at least as close as a console version without mods would allow.

I can’t really think of anything, which means that I guess how much I love a game is largely based on its mechanics. Huh.

Stealth in action games! To me the one that I actually hated the most was Gravity Rush 2.

Weapon durability in Breath of the Wild

Stamina bar / Let's make a huge open world, but you can't freaking run more than 10 seconds at a time! Super fun! /s

Parry/posture system in Sekiro. Yes, it's the premise of the game so you can boo this man, but I just cannot get comfortable with it beyond base trash mobs. Had it been a straight up action game without the posture system, I'd probably have like 1,000 hours in Sekiro. I love everything else about that game. As it stands, I think I made it to Ashina Castle once after starting over several times over the years.
