What are the best Doujin Games?

I would put pictures up for those who don't know what Doujin is but I don't have a photobucket account atm. Here is Subtle Styles website who made "Akatsuki".

I use to be heavy into Doujin style games a couple years back but I've somewhat left the scene behind and would now like to know what I've been missing since. I liked "Melty Blood" and "Akatsuki" and a friend told me about a game called "Armed Joe" which looks interesting so any games in that style would be great.

Warning Forever

oh, and Ragnarok Battle offline looks fairly interesting

Is this against the TOS?

I wasn't aware I'll take it down then.

EDIT: Ahh that was the name of the game :lol.

Just googled it and it looks interesting I'll think I'll check it out.

how is this against the TOS?

Doujin is fan created items, doesn't have to be small children covered in spunk, although in 99% of times, it is....

the shooters look shitbat insane - played some of them, but must purchase more... i feel a doujin shop-trip coming on ....

Yeah I've neglected the shooters more than anything but these look fantastic so I guess I wasn't finding the right ones. Do you usually purchase directly from the company homepage or is there a particular website you order all your games from?

Wait, that Cyber Formula game is fan made? It looks like it plays better than the official Cyber Formula games. :lol

Pretty much all of the Watanabe Seisakusho / French Bread works are notable.

Melty Blood / Melty Blood Re-act is a really good fighting game based off of doujinsoft "Tsukihime" (Now an anime + manga).

Drill Milky Punch is a fairly simplistic but fun survival beat-em-up with multiplayer support. You stay in a single rectangle arena the whole time, and simply try to fight off as many of the numerous spawning enemies as you can.

Ragnarok Battle Offline is a fun 2D beat-em-up with 3 player support. The multiple classes to choose from add some variety.

I haven't been able to play Immaterial and Missing Power yet unfortunately, but the Shanghai Alice shooting games on which it's based on are good 2d shooters of the type that throws a ton of bullets on the screen.

Doukutsu is free, an 'old style sidescroller' and is supposed to be a blast. I haven't had the time to try it myself yet sadly. You can get an English patch here.

Another free one is Gals PaniX, an entertaining QIX clone.

I haven't played ANGERAZE2, but I have played the original, and it was relatively solid. So hopefully the sequel should be good.

Shaheed79: Himeya sells doujinsoft, though sadly the prices are marked up quite a bit.

I've played a couple (fighting), but it's so hard to find decent games.

Whenever I look for some, I always find the 'not-so-clean' games.

Are there english versions to most of these games?

Typically no. But with many of the action and shooting games, it doesn't really need to be in English in order to understand it. It's not uncommon for menu options to be in English anyways.

Seems like a lot of those could be made be Treasure. Wow I miss Gunstar Heroes, Guardian Heroes. Short, but chock full of action till the end!

Thanks, this has been extremely helpful. And I don't mind paying good money for Doujin games as long as they are of high quality. Thats why I came here to ask cause I figured some GA-goers would have the skinny.

EDIT: Is that the same Wantanabe who makes Characters for the Mugen fighting game engine?

Yes, this game is absolutely wonderfull. If you like Metroid, Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap and similar you need to download it (and the translation).

Yes! Finally, someone mentions Cave Story (Doukutsu). Quite an achievement and an amazing amount of dedication on the part of Studio Pixel (5 years for a freeware game, phew). Invest time in this, take a break from a console game or something.

i was just playing it, what a great game.

Just started playing Doukutsu Monogatari... really fun game, totally reminds me of an oldskool Falcom game or something. Excellent work and it's definitely worth a play if you like classic gameplay.

wtf that game is awesome. It's better than most games I played last year.

Are the people who made it actual developers who work on games they really want to make part time? If not, someone needs to snap these guys up.

It's a hobby for them. I agree though, with a bit of funding and a nice pocket of development time I'd like to see a sequel or remake for the GBA. Goddamn, that'd rock.

"Bring it!...................Oh! You Win You Win!............I'm Sorry!"

This game is awsome. :lol

Since shooters is such a small market commercially nowadays, some of the more interesting stuff is doujin. I love it, just wish it wasn't on PC (as I hate playing in front of the computer). Too bad the (modded) Xbox didn't take off there.

Anyway, if you're interested, www.shootthecore.com has links to boatloads of doujin shooters. Most are, of course, crap, but I really like Cloudphobia, Radio Zonde, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Imperishable Night, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Ultimate Stage, and a bunch more I can't recall since I can't play most of them at home (crap PC). Oh, of course, anything by Kenta Cho/ABA Games: rRootage, noiz2sa, Tumiki Fighters, PARSEC 47...

Also, I wholeheartedly agree with the GalPaniX and Lethal Application recommendations.

Edit: DCharlie, can we get some (readable! :P) names for those games? Some of them look really great, especially the toony SOTN one and the weird-looking shooter below it.

Cave Story ~ Doukutsu Monogatari
http://agtp.romhack.net/doukutsu.html

"Please note that the patch will work with Cave Story 1.0.0.5. Should future versions of the game be released, I shall do my best to update the patch to be compatable with them."

EDIT: Oh right, I forgot to mention that's an english patch. Sorry!

I've been playing Doukutsu for the past hour. This game is awesome. Somebody please say it will be possible to get this running on a PSP or something? And how many levels are there?

It's so good. It's so oldskool.

Yep..that game was great, with multiple endings and a nice array of wpns its quite the game that will be kept in my HD
