Oh shit talk about a surprise, after Know Your Enemy, I didnt know what to expect from the manics new album but this is a huge surprise, theire best album since Everything Must Go, easily. A better album than anyone couldve expected from a band at this point of theire career

A nice mixed sampling of Fela's tunes, courtesy of Chief Xcel of Blackalicious. If you want an overview of Fela's career, this is a terrific place to start.

Big Daddy was an 80s standard of the Rhino label, with the gag that the band crashed in South America in the late 50s, finally made their way back to the States in the early 80s, and are now trying to catch up, playing contemporary songs in a pre-Beatles style. There's nothing quite like hearing "Hotel California" filtered through Del Shannon, the theme from "Star Wars" ala "Telstar", and doo-wop ballad renditions of "Super Freak" or "Just What I Needed".

This is Volume 2 of Shitmat's five 12" EPs from the _Full English Breakfast_ series, soon to be available on CD. I walked into a local record shop and heard a frentic drum and bass meets dub meets spastic editing remix of Harry Belafonte's "Banana Boat Song" and demanded they sell it to me on the spot. Brilliant, in a particularly mind-destroying sort of way.

In honor of the dearly departed Russ Meyer, I'm listening to the soundtrack to his masterpiece:

The songs by the fictional girl group the Carrie Nations are pretty fab in a campy, 70s acid rock way. They're a little Jefferson Airlplane, a littlle Mamas and the Papas and there's even a note of proto-punk in "Find It." Good shit, fellas.

Seriously, just give this a chance. I've seen no one else here even speak of it. Great rock band with some punk stylings. Excellent writing. I think it's my favorite album this year so far.

Standout tracks are Woe, The Futile, Yellow Cat/Red Cat, An Orgy of Critics... Hell, the whole thing rocks. I like every track. Admit It!!! is also highly enjoyable for a mostly spoken word piece.

An oldskool WaxTrax copy, too.

Very nice! I keep meaning to pick this up on CD, if only for the portability aspect, but vinyl would be very sweet as well.

television's marque moon (like the creepy guitar intro to friction).
the faint - wet from birth (phone call is fantastic).

Diablos, hey whats up.

Straylight Run consists of the melodic member of Taking Back Sunday.

Straylight Run started in May of 2003 when John Nolan and Shaun Cooper left Taking Back Sunday. With a few songs already written they began recording some demos before they had solidified their line up. After Breaking Pangaea split they invited its drummer Will Noon to practice with them and soon he was a permanent part of the band. A short while after that, the band's line up was complete when John's sister Michelle was asked to play piano and guitar for the band.

I don't know who they sound like really....not at all like Taking Back Sunday though. Maybe Weezer...maybe...Dashboard Confessional (Swiss Army Rom. was Carrabba's first and best solo effort) but not as whiny...Maybe John Mayer-ish. Check out the songs on their website.

Lyrics Excerpt:

"A Slow Descent"

i'm tired
cynical and broken, but wiser
heavy with a sense of resentment
but i used to be so much different
i used to have so much faith
when i started
you knew that i always meant it
i knew i could make a difference
i struggled to be heard
and then finally, one day people started listening
and i knew it
but as soon as it began it was ruined
a slow descent from unique to routine
over and over
"just do it again and this time with feeling"
the spotlight
the focus on the friends and the feelings
that made those stupid songs all worth singing
and don't you say a word
unless you're pretty sure that you want it analyzed
so we drove
for what seemed like days
over roads
and four lane highways
we said all we had to say
and i realized in time that it didn't mean anything

never

BTW- howcome you sound so psyched?

I like this album alot it is very different from what they usually produce and even though it gives into the emo trend I still like it. Holiday is the best song on the cd though.

Jimmy Eat World - Futures

Rings Around the World was my AOTY the year it came out. I couldn't get into Phantom Power though, and I could never find any of their other stuff to buy. Nowadays, I could find their stuff easily, but I have a backlog of things to buy. Perhaps if SFA were available in cheap vinyl form I'd be interested.
