Did you know you were going to shoot
off the top of a four year old girl's head
And look across her car-seat down into her skull
And see into her throat and did you know
that her dad would say to you,
"Please sir, can I take her body home?"
Oh wait, you totally did know... that that would happen
Cuz you're a jock who was too stupid and too greedy
And too unmotivated to do anything else but still be
The biggest and still do what other people tell you to do
You did it to still be a winner
You shot your grenade launcher into peoples windows and
Into the doors of peoples houses why should I care if
you get killed?
Holy shit!

Something tells me if Xiu Xiu was around like eight to ten years ago they would have been a fucking HUGE band based on what I've read, not only in reviews but people like you praising their work.

I still haven't heard them, though. Any song suggestions?

Xiu Xiu is 'niche' by definition.

...and that "song" you quoted sucks.

Hmm, they don't have that many immediately accessible songs. Most of the best starter stuff is on Fabulous Muscles. Let's see. . .

Crank Heart
I Luv the Valley OH
Bunny Gamer
Clowne Towne

From A Promise: (uh, less accessible)
Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl
Apistat Commander
Pink City
Blacks
Brooklyn Dodgers
Fast Car
Ian Curtis Wishlist

From Chapel of the Chimes:
Jennifer Lopez
Ceremony

From Knife Play: (not very accessible, but I think this is widely considered to be the fan favorite)
Don Diasco
I Broke Up (SJ)
Luber
Hives Hives
Anne Dong
Suha
Poe P. . .fuck it, I love every song on this album.

Oh wait, you totally did know... that that would happen
Cuz you're a jock who was too stupid and too greedy
And too unmotivated to do anything else but still be
The biggest and still do what other people tell you to do

Haters, shut up! The delivery on this part is so funny. The 'Oh wait, you totally did know' part makes me crack up. And the ending to the song is moderately cool, as well. This is certainly better than junk like Walnut House.

Edit: However, this 'song' is probably what keeps this album from being my favorite Xiu Xiu.

I didn't even notice the second part of your post. No shit it sucks.

I was into the band for a millisecond because I thought "Suha" was pretty fucking great. But then everything just fell apart. Didn't stop me from buying two of their albums, though. (That first song on A Promise is pretty good. Guerilla Pony Girl or whatever it's called.)

Xiu Xiu is about the best band that's come out in the last couple of years, pretty much hands down in my opinion.

I've been into 'em since Knife Play came out, and have loved everything they've put out since (though lately I haven't been able to listen to them, I'm not NEARLY sad enough). White Man's pretty much got all the bases covered, though I would suggest listening to Fag Patrol in its entirety, as it's a nice, "easy" way to get into the band. Then probably work backwards from Fabulous Muscles. They've gotten more "poppy" as the albums have gone on, but that doesn't make it any worse, they've pretty much been consistantly awesome.

Eminem

goddamit, Griese!
Fear Before The March of Flames (whom I will be seeing Monday)
My Chemical Romance
Alice in Chains (best band of the 90's officially, imo)
Simon and Garfunkel

Y'know, from what I've heard, her first album (Tanto Tiempo) is better. The remix album based on Tanto Tiempo also kicks ass.

But yes, Bebel IS cute. If you like that sound, you might enjoy Tom & Joyce as well...although it's a HARD to find album.

Hey people, I didn't hear the song until now! I think he makes a point in saying that not all troops are innocent. He might be a little too serious, but that's artsy indie rock for ya.

Well I'm listening to Fab Muscles and um, there's definitely something menacing and generally untolerable about their music. :| Dude sounds like he's about to shoot himself.

I still don't know how I can love Fear Before the March of Flames and at the same time love Simon and Garfunkel even more.

Seriously, listen to any track by Fear Before the March of Flames and any track by Simon and Garfunkel.

My range in music is like 0 - ~

Weeellll this album did not impress me at all.. I don't like the way it sounds, it's TOO raw. And this dude has some serious serious issues. Fabulous Muscles is a pretty fuckin' sick song. :|

I just tried it out too, didnt hit the spot so to say.

My curiosity has taken the best of me now, someone describe some Belle and Sabastien for me, or name a few songs to sample.

Diablos I know your a big pumpkins fan, as am I. Have you tried Porcupine Tree or Pineapple Thief? Its somewhat difficult to find the stuff, but PM me if you want to take a sample listen, Im pretty sure youd like both.

Their latest album is kinda like the Patridge Family, only without the suck. It's feel-good happy music, I almost want to call it hippie-rock.

Their other albums are a little different, but still really good. The best I can recommend is that you check out a few tracks like "I'm A Cuckoo," "If She Wants Me," "If You're Feeling Sinister," "String Bean Jean," "Photo Jenny" or "If You Find Yourself Caught In Love."

LOL I'm listening to Hole's Celebrity Skin for the first time in a couple years. This album sucks for the most part. I really like Celebrity Skin, Awful and Malibu though. The rest of this album is realllllly bad.

Been listening to a few Big Star songs here and there, but not an album. Any fans care to recommend me an album to start with?

Xiu Xiu is too weird for me, but they have their fucking brilliant moments. (ie. that wall of sound in Apistat Commander)

I'm mostly just checking this album out, since people keep saying it's their most poppy, and I really enjoy their poppy efforts.

(concerning Big Star) #1 Record/Radio City. Two excellent albums for the price of one. Some would say that Third/Sister Lovers is the best record, but I think it's really splitting hairs when you're talking about stuff of this quality.

Setlist please. Or if you can't remember everything, did they at least play new material? Did Jamie read from his book at all?

I really can't wait for the Deerhoof/Decemberists/Xiu Xiu show. It's the only big thing I'm really anticipating in September.

Ah, Big Star. AMAZING band, and amazingly overlooked these days. A few months ago, I started a "Big Star appreciation" thread which got all of 30 replies, if memory serves. <SIGH> I second White Man's recommendation -- if you're interested in Big Star, pick up the 2-albums-for-1 CD while you still can.

Of their three albums, Radio City is by FAR the best. #1 Record has a certain charm to it, but the more I listen to it, the more it sounds dated. Third/Sister Lovers is fascinating, because it's literally the sound of a band falling apart, but it's wildly uneven.

If you're looking for songs to preview (and good luck finding a way to preview them), check out "Way Out West," "What's Going Ahn," "You Get What You Deserve," "Watch The Sunrise," "Thank You Friends," and "Kanga Roo." (The first three are from Radio City.)

I have been indoctrinated. I didn't get it when it first came out, but the more I listen to Mt. Eerie (the album), the more I'm convinced that it's one of the finest ambitious works of the past ten years (or more). It's only flaw is those first 5 minutes are skip-worthy.

The things I expected to deliver have delivered (TV on the Radio, Sonic Youth, Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, Xiu Xiu), but nothing's really blown me away. There hasn't been anything new and excellent. And Trail of Dead getting delayed until January makes me sad, but at least they're doing a live show here in November. They're hot live.

thanksgiving is the new k supergroup. jason anderson, phil, forkner, etc. phil doesn't seem to be touring with them right now but jason, jona (obviously) and some others should be there.

ps, this is the first album phil is releasing on his new label

Nope. My cousin did, though and he said they played a nice 2 hour set. I'm kinda tired of the whole bss thing. That and Kevin Drew is my mortal enemy.

Multi-Syllabic Band Name - All Of Your Tastes In Music Sucks, Especially Those Of You Who Like Linkin Park, Weezer, System of a Down, KoRn, Limp Bizkit, Anything On MTV or College Radio, and Especially Those Of You Who Wear Square Glasses

It's a great album, with "I Hope You Die With Your Favorite Trend (Especially You Indie Kids)", "You're A Trendy Emo-Pussy & Your Girlfriend Knows It", "Tool Got Their Name From Their Biggest Fan, Namely You" and "Even Your Dog Thinks You're Lame, And He's A Professional Shiteater" deserving notice. I highly suggest it to everyone.

woah hoah that's some biting sarcasm man, it's like i've got bite marks.. from your WIT!!!!!111lolz

Maybe this is the right place to ask this. I recently saw a music video for a band which depicted them walking during normal music outdoors (looked like New York) and then during the "chorus" of the guitar riff, the screen would go black and white, fake cartoony explosions would appear everywhere, and the band would run around crazy ducking for cover until the riff ended, and they just started walking normally again.

I know the band is called "The ______", with the word starting with an 'S' (and it wasn't the Shins).

Any idea?

edit: Also, anyone know of any bands that sound like Alexisonfire minus the stupid screaming singer? I really like their sound, but can't stand singers that scream like that.

Cleverly Named Emo/Indie/Girlrock Band - Angsty Songtitle

This is where the whiny verses go,
I'd type them out but this works too,
They'd be about my really hot hoe,
Andhowshebrokeupwithmebecausemydickistoosmall.

So! This is where the chorus goes,
Idilee idilee do do do,
Oh, this is where the chorus goes,
It involves me bitching and whining AAAAAAAAAND
I'm so angsty I watch Mr. Show

And back to the whiny verse we go,
This song has no point except to,
Serve as a placeholder so,
ThatwhenlivejournalisbackupIcancopyandpasteitthere,woowoo!

So! This is where the chorus goes,
Idilee idilee do do do,
Oh, this is where the chorus goes,
I'll be sure to call my girlfriend a hoe AAAAAAAAND
Act all badass just like Johnny Mooooooooo

He's disappointed no one congratulated him for writing that in the lyrics thread.
