What are your favorite remakes so far, GAF?

Mine are:

• The Resident Evil 1 and 2 Remakes
• Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
• Bionic Commando Rearmed
• Final Fantasy III
• Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
• Metroid: Zero Mission
• The Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy
• The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

What are yours?

Black Mesa, RE2, MGS: Twin Snakes, Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy, Spyro Trilogy, Ratchet and Clank PS4 (it is more a reboot I know but still).

Twin Snakes looks good but FPV breaks the gameplay and some cutscenes are absolutely ridiculous. What were Silicon Knights thinking is beyond me.

God tier
Re1 rebirth gamecube
Shadow of the colossus by bluepoint

Great tier
Re2-3 remake

Greedy but hopefully good tier
Ff7 remake

Cunth tier
Mgs1 twin snakes

I'm going to go with a few that really embrace the originals while updating them to modern standards, or at least a new platform. I love well-done pixel art, and while most updates tend to update away the beauty of pixel art classics, a few have managed to evolve the originals while still respecting the art that made them special in the first place:

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP)
Romancing Saga 2
Romancing Saga 3

I'm also cautiously optimistic for the Trials of Mana remake, but that is really too early to tell.

RE1 and 2 by far for me. RE1 reimagined the original perfectly, RE2 revamped the original perfectly. Couldn't say which one I liked better. Both are absolutely perfect.

- Resident Evil / Resident Evil 2 Remake
- The Legend Of Zelda : Ocarina Of Time 3D
- Shadow Of The Colossus's Bluepoint Remake
- Spyro Reignited Trilogy
- Tomb Raider Anniversary
- Ratchet & Clank on PS4

And I make room in this list for Resident Evil 3 and Final Fantasy VII Remake in case of. They are certainly promising.

Still unbeaten as the best Pokémon games.

Not sure if id say fav, but defeinetly exmaples of how remakes should be done for the most part:

RE1 - Probably the only perfect example of how remakes should be done.
Twin Snakes - Doesnt replace the original, but supplements it with out being offensive to the OG
Tomb Raider Anniversary - It just works.
Crash/Spiro Trilogy - products of their time as games, but worthy remakes.
Shadow of the colossus
Pokemon Fire Red - I think that counts?
Legend of Drag...nevermind,

The only correct answer.
Resident Evil (2002) remains the finest remake I've ever played and the best entry in the series to date.
REmake 2 is good but, unlike this masterpiece, it doesn't replace the original game.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap
DuckTales: Remastered
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Metroid: Samus Returns
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions
Pathologic 2 (reboot?)
Yakuza Kiwami
Yakuza Kiwami 2
Odin Sphere Leifthrasir

I would say RE1 remake, which btw is truly a great and well made game, Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled and Wonder boy Dragons Trap.

But so far nothing beats RE1 remake, because the rest is just a re-skin of RE4 gameplay.

Resident Evil 1 remake was good but wasn't better than the original.

La-Mulana 1 remake is my favorite and I think it's better than the original too.

interesting opinion, it's probably the first time i see someone post this.

Could you explain a bit more why you think it's not better than the original? I played both versions to death and i'd like to see if there's something i missed.

I haven't played that many true remakes instead of just remasters.
RE2 was amazing, love it.

Senko no Ronde/Wartech on 360 was AMAZING compared to the original Naomi version. However the sequel DUO makes it hard to go back to.

I suppose that I dig the super SFII Turbo HD on switch and Metroid Zero mission on GBA too.

I prefer the original as well by a tiny bit. Mostly because of the sountrack. But of course nostalgia plays a big part in this as well.

While I loved Link's Awakening, it falls into a distant second here.

REmake 2 gets my vote. It totally reinvented the game while keeping it as a true survival horror experience. So stoked for REmake 3 in less than a month!

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered....for adding in Glitches not found in the first game!!!

Made me appreciate the game more and had fun at the crazy animation glitches that I saved on my YT Channel.

Seems like we are all on the same page with Resident Evil Remakes.

Personally, I enjoy the Spelunker HD remake on the PS3.

Final Fantasy IV for the PSP

The game had amazingly well done pixel art (honestly probably the best in the series) that was faithful to the original but had it's own style. Monsters were all redone, characters redone, environments were redone. It also moved to 16:9 aspect ratio.

Spell effects were massively improved as well:

The fact that this remake also included "The After Years" sequel as well as a direct sequel story all on one disc made it an incredible value.

It came out almost 9 years ago, and ever since I've wanted them to remake the other 5 2D sprite-based entries in the same style. Instead we got the DS remakes of III and IV as well as the mobile phone ports which were comparatively a letdown for me.

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered....for adding in Glitches not found in the first game!!!
But that game is considered "remaster" rather than "remake".

OT:
Original Resident EvilRemake
Resident Evil 2Remake
Link's Awakening
Shadow of the Colossus

Upcoming Remake I'm looking forward:
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Resident Evil 3Remake
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (I definitely consider that game as a proper Remake).

This thread just helped me to realize that Final Fantasy 7 is the only game I've played that was a remake.

It was also awesome...well the demo at least.

Do remasters and reboots fall under remake in this case?

My favorite remake has to be Pokemon Soul Silver.

Do remasters and reboots fall under remake in this case?
Definitely not. I always get pissed when people posts stuff like the 3DS versions of the N64 Zeldas in these threads. Personally, I really like Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver

Do you mean Lunar Star Harmony? Complete on PS1 isnt really a remake.

No, I meant what I said.

As per Wikipedia:

"Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, originally released in Japan as simply Lunar: Silver Star Story (ルナ~シルバースターストーリー, Runa ~Shirubā Sutā Sutōrī), is a role-playing video game developed by Game Arts and Japan Art Media as a remake of 1992's Lunar: The Silver Star. "
