What are your overall thoughts about remakes, remasters, reboots, etc...?

For me, it's bit difficult to say - I DO think that it is great when some old game receives a modern port with better performance, some QoLs, maybe a CRT filter, but... At the same time, they are also kind of a "disappointment", most games of the past were available with emulation which at this point is so advanced, and developed that it is almost its own form of art. Shaders, fan translation, undubs, overclock, recompilations, etc.; It's insane what emulation community did so far.

Remakes - generally, I think for a game that is already 10, or more years old, it is really for the best to just be remade from ground up, BUT, at least for me personally, remakes only have effect if I played the original from the past; for most people, if not everyone, the main purpose of remakes is to serve as replacements for original titles which are now outdated, be it visually, or gameplaywise, or both, which is ok, I guess.

Myself, I love remakes because I get to experience already familiar characters, and locations, but with modern visuals. In that sense remakes are for me both their own thing which I rate by their own merits, but also the sort of extension of the original games that brings them in the modern era in a way that IMO, simply can't be achieved by simply only giving them higher resolutions, or framerates.

Everything up to the PS3 / X360 era is, I would say already old enough for remake - some people may not like the changes, like with Shadow of the Colossus, or Demon's Soul, though, but I think that having them is better than not having them.

Not sure what to say about remakes of stuff from the previous generation; I really, really hate word "unnecessary" , because it is not up to me to decide what should, or should not be made, and thanks to stronger hardwared, even for games from previous improvements can be done, but still...
I don't hate them, the more the merrier I guess, although, even a simple remaster would be enough.

As far as remakes go I prefer when liberties are taken, and it isn't just 1:1, but I am fine with those as well.

As for reboots, which can be considered remakes in their own right, I don't mind them at all.

Most of the time there is no need except for the fact that fools like myself buy them. Ubisoft releases free 60fps patches for last gen and that is usually good enough.

I do wish we had more ports from PS3 and earlier.

I love when games are remade and upgraded from PS1-PS2 quality graphics to current gen graphics. Bonus when they polish the gameplay. I don't see anything wrong with that.

I am less and less interested in them. No matter how good the game was, I've usually already played through it multiple times.

Remakes are good if they're 1/ a long time removed from the original and/or 2/ reimagine the game to a greater extent.

If it's done well, they're great. Not everyone is going to want to set up emulation, so usually remastering or remaking a game is a great way to introduce old classics to a new generation.

Considering the turds the gaming industry keeps spewing out nowadays, remakes and remasters seem better than ever.

If it's just a simple upres/framerate boost/add HDR type re-release, I'm not into it at all.

But real time and effort put into it? I'm all for it. The Resident Evil remakes, Dead Space, Oblivion, Tony Hawk, Demon's Souls, Silent Hill 2, etc.. etc.. are all fantastic and a great way to update classic games.

Its become far too much of an ubiquituous phenomenon. Especially, among AAA devs. Back in the day, it used to be "fine" since it didn't take away the primary focus from developing and pushing new, bold and innovative ideas. Now they come off as if they've lost all the creative desire and drive to create something new.

It's way too much. It's one thing to update a game that is languishing on a long dead console and is very hard to play today - Silent Hill 2 is a great example of this, and it's essentially as much work as making a whole brand new game. It's another thing to "remaster" a five year old game that already looks and plays great on current hardware. This is just a cheap cash grab.

And you know, let's be real. Gamers have no imagination and no creativity. That's why their requests are always for remasters. But that doesn't mean that the companies themselves should take their lead. It's a sign of an industry that is creatively bankrupt.

I support and enjoy seeing older games get some TLC, whether it is a full remake or high quality remaster like what we saw with Oblivion. Dear ATLUS, please remake Shin Megami Tensei IV ;)

I'm like most here it seems, like them and hate them. A remake is easier to swallow than a remaster in most cases for me.

If a game was released generations ago and isn't that easy, if at all, accessible, then sure remake or remaster it.

If a game was only out about 2 years ago and they basically release a patched version and call it a remaster, they can go squat over a growing cactus and wait for a pat on the back.

Then price comes into too, especially with remasters.

Remakes / remasters of PS4+ games are not needed. In most cases a patch to 60fps is all anything would need. For 360/PS3, becomes a little less clear. For games early in that generation I think they benefit from remakes and remasters. Oblivion Remastered shows how a new coat of paint can bring a game into the modern era (never mind the gameplay which is still as bad as it was then). Dead Space Remake is an example of a game that looks better and is still a great experience, but it makes you question how necessary it was as the original was still "good enough". Resident Evil 4 Remake is practically a different game from the original, and I think that alone makes it worthwhile to make and play.

Dont care much for remasters as i play on pc where theres little to no reason for them to exist.

I do love remakes, but thats probably because only one game ive played has been remade so far. I imagine id like remakes a lot less if that number was notably higher, but this way i get to play a lot of stuff thats either too old to go back to or stuff ive missed out on that i wanted to play and now i get a much better, modern version of that.

I think it's a strong indicator of studios having a harder time getting past the conceptualization phase of pre-production these days for various reasons before, amongst other things, shareholders come demanding money.

Something a lot of gamers struggle with is the idea that a specific game might not be made for them. It's main character energy I guess or whatever the kids are calling it.

Recently discussed the Persona fanbase and the fact that the fanbase doubled between Persona 4 and Persona 5 and how that doubling means that a large percent of the Persona fanbase that exists today had never played Persona 1-4, making these games ripe for remaking for a large swath of people.

Persona 5 has sold more than Persona 1-4 combined... Yeah, it's worth revisiting those games and gives the people who did play them a chance to replay them if they want to. There's nothing wrong with that.

Depends on the context: Oblivion Remaster cool, Days Gone Remaster not cool

Resident Evil 2 Remake cool, Last of Us part 1 Remake not cool.
