Nintendo is padding the lineup of a dying console. Sony just released a remaster of a 7 year old game that looked already amazing at release, on a system that has yet to show all of its potential.Kinda disingenuous to point this out as a Sony thing while giving Nintendo a pass, when their next first-party release is yet ANOTHER port of Donkey Kong Country Returns.
There's practically no major AAA title that doesn't go all-hands-on-deck in full production. We've already seen Naughty Dog try and fail to split the difference, we know it has caused problems for Insomniac, it doesn't work for Bethesda, or Rockstar, etc etc. It's a bit of a chicken and egg scenario though as a lot of these remakes and remastered are outsourced or smaller internal teams/studios while the new releases are being worked on by primary development staff . It's an inexpensive way to round out product offerings between major releases.
Most of those games are irrelevant and are just taking up space on the storefronts, you know that. I listed the re-release output from major publishers and studios because they are the ones that set the tone for the year. No more than 15-20 games in any given year do or should. And this year, the tone has been set by re-releases by the majority, vastly. That's the problem.Hundreds if not 4 digits of games release every year, that's a tiny amount you can ignore like most of those if you don't want them.
They will soon run out of titles they can reasonably remaster. And I really don't think it builds confidence amongst the majority of the audience. The current gen should have its own library.I’m not all that convinced a brand new IP would be any good. I’d rather have a remake or remaster than a new idea that sucks. I’m happy with what we’ve gotten so far. If anything, they can remake and remaster even more games. I’ll support it 100%.
By the end of this gen, I would've hope there would be enough failures of what you're talking about to get it through to the studios and management that this clearly isn't a good idea in the long run.You see what companies do to make money. They make a service game

If Elden Ring DLCis nominated for GOTY it's not going to be because of a remake. It's going to be because an award show that allowed Cyberpunk to be nominated for Best Ongoing game is once again deciding it doesn't care about its own credibility. They're about to nominate and possibly award Elden Ring DLC for GOTY, and this is why.
People on internet love acting jaded and whiny about everything, I think they enjoy that more than playing actual games.Got to love the internet.
New Games suck!! I miss the old games.
(brings back old games changing only graphics)
Remakes of good games suck! I want new games.
Can't please everyone.
Include 'Spends more time overall focusing on remakes and remasters than playing the hundreds of new experiences every year' and this post sums it all up.Got to love the internet.

Sounds like they gave up on consoles and wants easy sneaky quit.
I've never been one to say new games suck. I think this year has been particularly weak for new games though.Got to love the internet.

If you mean AAA, there might, might be a case to make here. If you mean gaming in general, this is incorrect.I've never been one to say new games suck. I think this year has been particularly weak for new games though.
like hollywood, out of ideasThey're about to nominate and possibly award Elden Ring DLC for GOTY, and this is why.

Not all of these are bad or unnecessary, but at this rate, the majority of the 9th gen's library will be carry overs from the 6th. And a too many of the actually new games we get border on rehashes.
Clear to see why enthusiasm around gaming is down.
You and I disagree about this, but some of the new IPs that have come out this year are new IPs in name only.We are still getting new IPs and this year alone we got some nice new IPs.
Oh no, so many good remakes of good games. Reliving classics. Exposing young gamers to the glory days. The humanity. Please stop.
I mean, it's Vanillaware and Unicorn Overlord. It's not setting the tone or moving any needles.Devs like Vanillaware makes remasters while still making new games.
Like how they re-released GrimGrimoire while also giving us brand new game like Unicorn Overlord….i don’t see anything wrong with that.
If you mean AAA, there might, might be a case to make here. If you mean gaming in general, this is incorrect.
We're always told about the bastion of creativity that is the indie space, but I dare say it's just as exhausting as the AAA one is. You're getting a slew of nostalgia-driven "spiritual successors", glorified visual novels, and poor imitations of past AAA experiences that don't meet the standards of either then or now.try the indie section on steam.
this is wrong
Sounds like the issue is more with you than anything, if you don’t enjoy anything then no one can fucking help you.You and I disagree about this, but some of the new IPs that have come out this year are new IPs in name only.
Like, sorry, but Rise of The Ronin is just more Koei Tecmo slop. Stellar Blade would be and kinda is one of those titles that just comes and goes - only reason anyone was paying attention was because Sony was using it to make their year seem less dire and because of culture war stuff. It just smacks of a mishmash of Nier Automata and Soulslop.
I could go on, but you get the picture. And I would argue that I'm more right than wrong because of the sales and sales trends of these titles.
i guess you only see AAA games nothing else…..too bad for you.I mean, it's Vanillaware and Unicorn Overlord. It's not setting the tone or moving any needles.
Again, you can castigate me if you like, but there are more people in core gaming who did not and will not buy or enjoy this year's new lineup than there are people who did.Sounds like the issue is more with you than anything, if you don’t enjoy anything then no one can fucking help you.
It's wishful thinking to believe that the majority of the market doesn't see things this way.i guess you only see AAA games nothing else…..too bad for you.
Fix your algorithm. Find newer content creators. Do something so that you're not seeing the same things all the time. I guarantee you it's out there but no one here is going to hold your hand and lead you to new experiences. You will have to do that part mostly by yourself and if you genuinely enjoy gaming you will find those new experiences you're looking for. We're always told about the bastion of creativity that is the indie space, but I dare say it's just as exhausting as the AAA one is. You're getting a slew of nostalgia-driven "spiritual successors", glorified visual novels, and poor imitations of past AAA experiences that don't meet the standards of either then or now.
I am open to hearing about whatever hidden gems there are, but I would be surprised if it's a name I haven't heard before, most of which are years old at this point.
Besides, the AAA market is what sets the tone. Simple as. If enthusiasm for that drops, indie games won't be exempt from the downturn.
This doesn't matter. Look for YOU. Yourself. Who gives a damn about what the popular vote is here and elsewhere. Find gaming experiences to enjoy for YOU.Again, you can castigate me if you like, but there are more people in core gaming who did not and will not buy or enjoy this year's new lineup than there are people who did.
You can't expect a calendar year to look like this and not expect people to point it out. This is a video game forum, not church.
I said what I said because I've already played around with all sorts of searches and filters, storefronts other than Steam, etc. The vast majority of Steam releases are trash, everyone knows it. I have a certain bar of quality and a sniff test.Fix your algorithm. Find newer content creators. Do something so that you're not seeing the same things all the time.

This is an unfair statistic because the amount of games that aren't good compared to good will always be the majority. The library will always increase per year and make this the case due to numbers. Even incredible years like 2023 would be seen as 'majority trash' if you go by this flawed metric. The vast majority of Steam releases are trash, everyone knows it.
This is fine and no I'm not saying 'everything is great', I'm simply saying this:I'm just pointing out that too much of this calendar was re-releases. Some of which I actually like or plan to play. I'm less pessimistic on the future of gaming than a lot of people here, and believe that some of the dooming is too much. But you cannot seriously look at this, be given the solution of fine-tuned dumpster diving, and think that everything is great.
Is incorrect.I think this year has been particularly weak for new games though.
Same here, i enjoy Remakes/Remasters. Can't wait for the Gothic remake.I love Remakes/Remasters (within reason).
There's a crazy amount of new games coming out every week so.. you know.. buy those instead.
There are plenty of new games came out this year that are nothing like Dragon Age.with the exception of Astrobot, every game I’ve bought this year has been a remake/remaster. I would rather have them if the new stuff being churned out is something like Dragon Age where they have to teach me their views on gender.
Can’t agree with that.I've never been one to say new games suck. I think this year has been particularly weak for new games though.
