What does Starfield need to do to win 2023 GOTY?

The bear of bad news
I thought it was shoo in this year but the competition is tough.

Can they pull it off and what parts of the game do you think need to improve from the traditional Bethesda open world?

To be very very very good. Also release in 2023.
Wait are you talking about NeoGAF GOTY? Then it just needs to release this year. Halo won the other year.

Skyrim style character progression. With tons of fields of specialisation to make whatever character you can dream of.

Different states for each city/ locations based on which factions you side with. Huge impact of your actions. As complex as they can make on new hardware.

They have the template. Basically get back to what they used to make.

Go back in time and get TOTK delayed to 2024.

Starfield has no chance regardless though. I doubt it even is a top 5 game of the year at this point. Between Bethesda and MS, not much hope. Modders will probably make it fun to play in 2024 though.

Not sure if Starfield will win GOTY, for me it just has to be a good RPG exploration game like they use to make 10 years ago, game of the year awards have never influenced me, gamers like different games, it's normal

It depends, will it be a +90?
This.

I half-way removed my comment when I saw yours pop up 😄

There are already so many 88-90+ games this year that Starfield will have to be exceptional to join that list -- let alone win it. And that goes for almost every game this year. Lots of them, despite being good, will not make the list.
  • Dead Space
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Hogwart's Legacy
  • Street Fighter 6
  • Diablo 4
  • Metroid Prime Remastered
  • Zelda TOTK
  • Moss: Book 2
  • Hi-Fi Rush
  • Octopath Traveler 2
  • Star Wars Jedi Survivor
etc.

If the game has improved mechanics from Fallout4/Skyrim, has minimal bugs at launch, and very rich and full universe. It can easily do all that, but then you have to sway people away from TotK.

More than likely it will win GOTY as there isn't just one GOTY. There are hundreds of outlets handing out their own awards.

I'm just hoping for a good game.

It cannot happen. Zelda will win.

The only way it could win is if award givers decided to boycott Nintendo.

Fully explorable planets whose entire surface is traversable (meaning you can theoretically circumvent the surface of a planet either on foot or with some kind of vehicle by just continuously moving in one direction).

Deep skill and progression system where different classes/specializations actually feel different to play.

Good quest design and writing, as well as interesting (and mutually exclusive) factions.

Good combat and gunplay, on par with FPS like Doom.

Good space combat, with tons of (meaningful) customization options for our ship.

Good exploration with worthwhile rewards (including underwater exploration).

A variety of different customizable vehicles for traversal on planets (in the air, on the ground, as well as underwater).

Good performance and not too many bugs.

If Starfield delivers all this, I could see it getting some GOTY awards.

For the most part it has to be a really good experience. Zelda is astonishingly well polished for what it lets you do which puts it well above its peers so it is going to be hard to dethrone. Starfield releasing later in the year is a plus and you know there are going to be people just giving out points to the game because it's the next huge Bethesda and Xbox game.

People place way too much importance on metacritic scores and GOTY awards. Just hope for good ole Todd Howard game that we want to sink hundreds of hours into.

None of the bolded will happen

It would really need to nail space exploration and spacecraft building. The combat needs to be fun. Do that, along with having a big story and tons of side quests and it can join the GotY conversation. But Zelda seems like a lock.

Can't see much topping Zelda, SM2, or a polished FFXVI out of the gate. Those IP are too strong, too well known.

But as long as Starfield is good-great that's all that matters.
They have to continue to justify the $70 price tag with quality releases like every other publisher at this point. The pressure is on for everyone.

Top TotK, which is pretty much impossible given how janky these Bethesda games always are at launch vs how polished TotK is.

Dead space = Remake
Resident evil 4 = Remake.
SF6 is similar to SFV
Diablo 4 is more of the same with some changes
Metroid Prime = Remaster
TOTK was a very similar game to botw.
Moss: Book 2 (more of the same)
Octopath Traveler 2 (more of the same)
Star wars Jedi Survivor = Sequel (more of the same)

The main contenders are Hogwarts and Hi Fi rush. Both completely new games. Starfield can and will beat both of these. I'd say its basically a lock for GOTY at this point. Skyrim in space? 11/10

To change from most of the others posts:
NO microtransactions, or like Capcom RE remakes, not something that will break the game.
No game breaking bug like Skyrim got on the PS3 at launch.
No lies or half truths like it happened for Fallout 76. I am talking about the drama around the game and add-ons( bag, drink, pip boy...)
No ending like No mans sky, who made the whole journey useless. I also want a clear ending that will no need a sequel too.
This is just to be considered a GOTY. To win against zelda is just not possible. I would love to have a game that is good enough to try. But I feel a online connection being mandatory or a real life store to be presented. Because it just seems so easy to make money that they will not resist. I hope to be wrong.

If we're talking about objective GotY he can't because TotK will win 100%.

But if i talk about my personal tastes he would not have to be that incredible to beat Zelda because Zelda was a disappointment.

Everyone is allowed to have dreams.

It doesn't need to be, nor is expected to be, a GOTY in 2023. There's too much competition in a year with Zelda, FF16, and RE4 already

We should hope it reviews well and is a great game somewhere in the high
80s metascore
