Sonic fans (of which I am one) go cray cray at each other all the time. If I had to make a vote for the most immense hater boners between fans it's lock-on and Monster Hunter. I've seen some things. (It's generally cooled down now, I suppose the reason is people arent following the series to 3DS)

GNR fans are the worst. Visit any GNR message board and everything will devolved into Axl vs Slash, ALWAYS, even when the topic is completely unrelated. But the fans of the newer members also get into flame wars over Buckethead vs Bumblefoot, Slash vs Robin, Robin vs DJ, Bucket vs Slash, 2002 band vs 2006 band vs 2009- band. It's fucking awful. The most self loathing, self combative group of fans I've ever been involved with.

That's a good one. Pretty definitive consensus. The issue with this conversation is that it is hard for some people to willingly admit their opinion is an outlier.

I actually like Temple of Doom as much as Raiders and enjoy Last Crusade the most, but that is another series with a pretty good consensus.

LOST? I can't imagine how some people enjoy the last 2 seasons especially on rewatching them and knowing what's coming.

Also, Song of Ice and Fire - people who refuse to watch the show (myself) and people who refuse to read the books. I think it's kinda funny, you can always tell who has read the books and who has seen the shows by what they call Daenerys. People who have read the books will just call her Danny, but people who have only seen the shows will call her by her one of her titles like Khaleesi or Mother of Dragons or whatever.

2D Metroid vs 3D Metroid used to be the most common divide between Metroid fans until Other M came out and basically became the thread killer for any Metroid discussion anywhere. you can't go anywhere and discuss Metroid without the topic degenerating into a Other M shitfest (and it's been almost 3 years already. forget the damn game, you idiots!)

Zelda Fans are pretty divided too. the 3D camp is divided between N64 Zeldas and the ones that game after and the 2D camp is classic games vs the 2D ones that came after the series went 3D.

Metroid?

There's the occasional outlier who thinks Prime is bad or Other M is good, but for the most part, Metroid fans just seem to agree that the series is generally awesome (except Other M).

Super vs. Prime should be a divisive question, but it seems to result in more responses like, "Well they're great, but I prefer _____" than, "_____ is great and _____ is shit!"

Though whether the Metroid fanbase is large enough to be considered a fandom is certainly up for debate.

There are several divides among Metroid fans as far as I can tell(queue all the debates over what makes Metroid Metroid in a series that is constantly moving in new directions). HOWEVER, I believe that the relative small size of the community creates a bond that pretty easily overshadows such squabbles.

A better example of this is the Mother fandom. If you want a fanbase that seems to be all singing and hugs, there you go. Everyone has their opinion regarding 2 vs 3, but no one seems to care which side of the fence you're on.
