What Game Had The Best Or Most Shocking Ending?

Darkmakaimura

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Like the title says, which video game do you remember having the best ending or even the most surprising or shocking ending?

I think the first game I ever played that had an ending that blew me away was the original Might and Magic.

The fact that you find out you were on a spaceship all along at the end of the game really surprised me as a kid.

There are definitely other games I could add here but I'd have to remember them.

Mario Bros 2…

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS WAS ALL A DREAM??

I loved the ending of half life 2. "Time, Dr Freeman?"

I wasn't expecting it at all, so when the game totally froze and he arrived and said that line, it was just epic.

Dead Space 2

When Isaac looks at Ellie expecting another jump scare like what happened at the end of Dead Space and Ellie is like what? One of the best endings, imo, considering it's a fake out out and recalls to the previous ending.

A few already good ones mentioned.

inFamous
Lies of P
SOMA
Spec Ops: The Line

Lots of games have shocking moments, but few actually at, or near the end. Still, I know I'm forgetting some.

Silent Hill 2 had the most shocking ending for me. I don't want to spoil it but it hits hard and I never would've thought that Konami could go in such a dark direction for James. I thought about that ending for days. An ending like that was unheard of in gaming up untilthat point. It still is. At least for me.

Gotta love these nameless games
If you don't know these games you need to stop browsing and start playing.
In order:
Shadow of the Colossus
Inside
Nier Automata

My vote goes to Nier Automata. Ending E is the most profound ending I've ever experienced in a video game.

Don't tell me what to do

But I know those games. I also recognized the screenshots.

I really can't stand it when people expect you to know every game out there and post screenshots without names

Mass Effect 3 had the most shocking ending to me. I was deeply shocked at how utterly terrible and stupid the whole thing was. To this day it's the worst ending to a game I've ever experienced.

That aside, personal favorite endings for me are:

  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • Metal Gear Solid 3
  • Silent Hill 2
  • Cyberpunk 2077 - The Star Ending
  • The Witcher 3 - Witcher Ending
  • Final Fantasy X

These endings for me are either the most memorable, or the most satisfying.

inFAMOUS was shocking for me, but maybe I was just oblivious and everyone else figured out who the bad guy was before the ending?

Many games have cool endings but I think those have stuck with me the most:

Metal Gear Rising. Kino beyond the kino. Pure ludo. Videogames where made for this.

L.A. Noire, nobody has the BALLS to make an ending like the one of this game anymore.

Asura's Wrath. "No more tears".

Dragon's Dogma, both 1 and 2. Love me pawn, simple as.

Some of the most memorable to me, with some quotes:

- Darksiders: "No... not alone."
- Tales of Symphonia: "Farewell, you who stood on the path I chose not to follow..."

Soma... oh my god. The existential dread from that
Especially the very last scene after credits at 10:46... that destroyed me

The Darkness 2007
Part on a bench... man. I cried like a baby as a teen

The last guardian ending always makes me cry. I only finished the game once but when I saw the ending on yt again, I cried again like a baby lol.

Death Stranding SOMEHOW manages to make me feel emotions after all the crazy stuff.
Tlou2 ending is perfection. Perfect lesson Ellie understood too late. Very emotional.

As someone who was completely unfamiliar with Halo lore, Reach's ending shocked me.

Really? I guess it's not in your face but they do bring up the fall of Reach in the original trilogy, and there's kind of a thing about you being THE spartan. So I wouldn't say it was shocking, but it was a fantastic ending and definitely stuck with me.

Some of the early Assassin's Creed games have pretty incredible endings. The big standouts are the first usage of the Apple of Eden and the appearance of the Precursors/Isu at the end of the first game, and Ezio speaking directly to Desmond at the end of Revelations.
Dragon's Dogma's finale and post-game are incredible. The post-game's my favorite part of the game!
Dying Light's original ending was pretty lame, but the end of its huge expansion pack The Following definitely makes up for it. The shelter the player has been regularly returning to throughout the game is overrun with infected, killing off essentially the entire main cast, and the protagonist is infected and becomes a new deadly kind of zombie. I think the city got nuked? But the protagonist escapes, and the game ends with him turning, and attacking people outside the quarantine, spreading the infection.
Half-Life 2: Episode Two :lollipop_confounded:
Dead Space 3 Awakened ends with several necromorph Brethren Moons descending on Earth, wiping out the majority of humanity and robbing us of a homeworld. The consequences for a sequel could have been amazing.
The Evil Within and Vampyr both had pretty cool reveals at the end. I'd still like a sequel to Vampyr.
Lastly, Outer Wilds has an amazing ending that I won't detail :lollipop_smiling_face_eyes:

Mass Effect 3 for all the wrong reasons. Terrible conclusion to Shepards adventure.

Bioshock Infinte was kind of cool. Tying in with the rest of the games and lore.
