What happened to Ricky Gervais?

Even though I like Gervais, having no interest whatsoever in the Golden Globes, I didn't watch. The link in this thread in the first time I saw his hosting, or even heard of it. Does anyone have any links to actors and actresses reacting to it? I'm curious how many people were actually offended and to what extent. I thought it was hilarious. It was extremely mean, but these people are being awarded millions of dollars without contributing anything of any great worth to society, these jabs were probably the worst thing to happen to them all year.

the second series of extras cemented his downfall by being one of the most tragic dips in quality in the history of comedy. the office was incredible, extras 1 was great and he hasn't done a thing worth a damn since.

The Ricky Gervais Show, in every form, is better than anything else he has done.

Did you look at the links I posted? The guy who made said he included the reactions that were worth seeing.

(Or maybe you mean later reactions?)

Yeah, I mean later reactions.

Actually, from what I saw, most of the reactions shown in the video were of people laughing. Johnny Depp definitely seemed amused at his jabs at The Tourist, unless that was a "Oh God do I want to kill you right now" smile.

thought Steve Carrell came off as a huge prick by pushing Ricky away.

I dont understand why everybody there was so sensitive about this. Why hire the guy when they KNOW damn well what he does? It would have been 10X worse had he just went up there and did a generic job of things rather than act like himself.

Fuckin uptight Hollywood. Whatever.

I'm pretty sure that's just part of their schtick. They had the same thing going on last year during the Golden Globes.

Am I the only one who finds Ricky Funny only when Karl is in the equation? I know half the shit Karl says and does is an act.. (Believing Karl is "real" is like being a child in the 80s and believing Hulk Hogan in WWF is real).

Which makes me come to a conclusion that: Solo Ricky (his stand up crap) isn't really that funny. Just keep making podcasts with Karl and Steve Ricky and I'm entertained and happy

You have perception issues.

The Extras Christmas Special is when Gervais took a nosedive in to shit and never recovered.

Now he spends his time pretending to be an edgy comedian who's topics are as risqué as a 1990s sitcom. Ooh, fat people! Religion! Celebrities are right rubbish, god how shallow can you get?! *runs to America and sucks Ben Stiller's dick*

I think the smugness isn't an act. If you watch his stand-up, you can tell he's a pompous arse.

I saw clips of An Idiot Abroad, and it looks like it might be half decent, as Karl Pilkington did say quite a few amusing things (scripted or not), but the clips with Ricky Gervais and his fucking annoying laugh means I'll never know, as I won't be watching it.

On a side note, I saw this ad for An Idiot Abroad on a billboard, and I'm willing to bet that Ricky had the final say on being sat right in front of the actual main fucking "character" of the show.

The XFM shows are some of the funniest things I've ever heard, so I'll give him a pass for just about anything. His movies haven't been that great but I've enjoyed all of his television projects and most other appearances he does.

People don't (didn't) know what Karl looked like. Gervais being front makes sense just because of the association.

I didn't really like Idiot Aboard. The only good episodes are the ones in the white room talking about the show. Karl needs people in a room to bounce off otherwise the act gets old quick.

I loved the Office when it first came out in the UK. But his stuff after that I wasn't a huge fan.

One cringe worthy moment was at LiveAid and he had nothing to say an no jokes, and he just resorted to his old dance he did in The Office

Not really been too interested in his films either, they don't seem that funny or interesting. But I can see why Americans like him: he is a complete opposite to the slick back gel haired safe comedians you are used to. Over in the UK we still got a lot of comedians who can take his place (satirical comedy): Boyle, Carr, Brooker, etc

Now he is an annoying, smug (but not "mocking" smug), been in some awful movies and seems to have pissed off hollywood.

His shtick has always been preening smugness. Invention of Lying is the "awful" movie you're talking about whereas Cemetery Junction and Ghost Town were actually decent. Moreover, the Golden Globes "fallout" is media nonsense propagated because everything else about the show is, and always has been, quite dull.

Further to this he is doing something he swore he would never do and playing his character from the British office in the American one in the weeks coming up.

It's just a cameo. Nothing serious.

So what happened? Did he just sell out and become shit?

Extras was very good until the Christmas Special. An Idiot Abroad has been fantastic. And him and Merchant are launching their next BBC comedy this year. So, yeah, no. The reports of his death are premature.

The Golden Globe presentation got me to check out the whole world of Gervais, so it obviously did something right.

I don't think his comedy is that exceptional... but I like the guy as a conversationalist, and I love the interaction between him, Steve and Karl on the podcast and An Idiot Abroad.

Here's my POV:
Just watched the GG's someone posted, brilliant. RDJr has scored a few extra points with me.
Extras was awesome... except for the latter half of season 2.
The Office was awesome.
He's an awesome interviewee, check him out the times when he was on Conan/TTS.
His podcasts are pretty damn good too. He plays a great arsehole.

All up... why the fuck was this thread even created?

Ricky @ the Golden Globes just before getting to the part where he will apparently poke fun at Buscemi.

No.

It's at the start when Ricky talks about all the great shows and he mentions Buscemi and he compliments him. He doesn't make fun of the dude on the GGs.

The Office = Great.
Extras = Shit.
XFM shows = Great.
Podcasts = Good, but nowhere near as good as the XFM shows.
Stand-up = Shit.
Ghost Town = Shit.
The Invention of Lying = Shit.
Cemetary Junction = Decent.
An Idiot Abroad = Great.

I really love The Office, XFM/podcasts and An Idiot Abroad, but everthing else he's done has been pretty bad. He's really, really inconsistent and kind of still using that one note act he had as Brent. Everything he writes just seems like an extension of the characters from The Office and it's boring and uninspired.

Steve and Karl play a large part in making his projects tolerable. They're the highlights of the audio shows and An Idiot Abroad, for example.

George Carlin and Jimmy Carr would be my two favourites.

His stand-up is so, so bland. He just reads parts of the bible and makes fun of it, or pretends to be an animal. Zzzzz. All of the best anecdotes are repeated from the radio shows, without Steve and Karl's great input.

This x1000

Can't stand Ricky Gervais, but I'll watch/listen anything he puts out as long as it's got Karl and Steve. Hell, the worst part of the podcasts is Ricky's goddamn irritating laugh, and with An Idiot Abroad I often found myself saying "Karl may be an idiot, but Ricky is a right cunt".
