What if I want to play my current consoles today in some 20 years?

Title is messed up sorry, it's about playing them online in that timeframe.

Let's say PS2 and Xbox.

Apart from Lan games, as for the Xbox, I think Microsoft (as long as they do respect their contracts), if they do decide that there isn't a profitable market anymore as for online play, they can pull out the plug, right? They sure won't soon. What if they ever do? Is that really sure that all Live-only games will be unplayable online? I have not gotten Xbox Live as of yet because of various other reasons, but this bothers me. Other than the monthly fees, I want to be able to play these games online (pretty much) whenever I see fit in the future. It's too centraziled for that, ain't it?

And as for PS2 games, well they do not have a central server, other than some DNAS checking. DNAS is for checking for modchips, bootleg and burned games to disable them, right? Can we still hope to play the games online for quite some time? Let's take some games like Quake 3 and Soldier of Fortune 2, strictly as for the authentification (and not about piracty at all mind you). This is an analogy. When they pulled the plug on the cd-key authentification servers, lo and behold, games that required an authentification can be played online without it.

As for PS2 online games, and games which require DNAS, will we be able to play all these games without troubles, or could in some way the PS2 just refuse to play the games (all originals of course) because even if the games are genuine, they cannot be authentified?

System Link XBox games can be played through various gamespy/xbox connect types of things. A bunch of Live games don't support system link though, and many don't support voice over system link.

I was wondering that the other day, when I poped in Steel Battalion and forgot it was online only.... guess I'm the sucker

shit... I wanna play my DOS games now with no hastle ....

It will all be emulated.
PCs in 20 years (if they still make PCs) will be more than capable of emulating today's consoles. Someone will just have to make the online side of things, but if they can make the emulator, I'm pretty sure they can reverse engineer the online components too.

I thought this would be a thread on how perhaps TVs as we know it would be obsolete, and that in 20 years TV sets would be hard to come by. :P

Though I expect TVs to change little in 20 years...unless there is a major breakthrough...

I think a pertinent question might be - How many other players do you think will be out there to play against?

The average Xbox likely won't last 20 years because of the HDD so M$ pulling the plug on individual titles should be the least of your worries.

In 20 years there won't be anyone to play against. I think they'll let some servers of the next next gen consoles running for the Xbox and such.

In 20 years they won't be any more entertainment as the goverment will have taken over all our brains and jacked us in to goverment propoganda 23 hours of the day. The one free hour will be called "free time" so that we don't go insane.

I know! 20 years was an analogy, just picture, when (if) MS pulls the plug on Xbox Live, and Sony on DNAS. Hypothetically, if there are people to play with online, will the systems work? Will Xbox Live be a white elephant because it's centralized onto MS's servers (excluding Lan games over the Internet), or will PS2 games that have DNAS will be unable to be played over the Internet because they can't get the check, or will it be like say Quake 3?

PS2 I don't think it will be a problem, save for MMORPGs.

I'm HIGHLY considering building an older PC (DX4/100 - P133) dedicated to DOS gaming. Cheap parts are readily available today.
